At the top of the tallest building in the center of Yangcheng, Zhao Jin stood in the sunlight like a statue.
He had watched everything unfold outside the district with a calm expression. Liu Jiyun, what a pity. I will remember you.
He didn't intervene, nor did he save him. Liu Jiyun hadn't shown any outstanding performance, and his ability was of little value anyway.
After all, he preferred a hands-off approach; whether they survived to evolve to a higher level or died in battle, it was all the arrangement of Destiny.
Of course, if a target possessed exceptionally high value, he might consider intervening. It all depended on his mood.
"Hmm?" Zhao Jin's brow furrowed.
Three kilometers away, over a thousand meters above the ground.
A young man with white wings on his back stared ahead, a faint golden glow in his eyes as he looked toward Zhao Jin's location.
How strange. What on earth is that guy doing standing there? I can't sense any energy fluctuations from him at all. The young man looked puzzled.
With his eyesight, he could clearly see a single strand of hair on the other man's head from three kilometers away.
After a moment of thought, still unable to fathom what Zhao Jin was doing, he muttered, "Whatever. I'll just capture him first and torture him a bit, then I'll know."
His mission was to monitor any anomalies in Yangcheng, and Zhao Jin looked highly suspicious to him right now.
Whoosh!
With a flap of his wings, he flew toward Zhao Jin's location.
Pfft!
He had barely flown ten meters when a sudden, sharp pain shot through his back, and all sensation in his wings vanished.
The young man's face twisted in horror. Turning his head, he saw two blood-drenched wings on either side of him, falling through the air alongside him.
The severed edges of the wings were perfectly clean, yet he had no idea when he had been attacked.
"Ahhh!!!" A second later, as his descent accelerated, the young man screamed in terror as he plummeted.
Crash!
In a park, the young man crashed straight into the concrete ground, creating a crater. His body exploded, and half of his head flew dozens of meters away.
A mangled heap of flesh and blood splattered across the spot. Nearby, several elderly men turned pale as they witnessed the scene.
"Jumping off a building? But where's the building?" An old woman's legs trembled as she looked up at the sky.
There were no tall buildings nearby.
Over an hour later.
On a highway outside Yangcheng, Liu Wen sat in the back of a black car, dialing Liu Jiyun and Liu Qi's numbers over and over, but he couldn't get through to either of them.
Liu Zhian, who was driving up front, glanced back at Liu Wen from time to time. "Elder, still no connection?"
Staring at his phone after more than a dozen unanswered calls, Liu Wen's expression darkened. "No. Your father contacted me a few hours ago, but now there's absolutely no response. Something might have happened."
The Night Slaves lacked the ability to transmit their memories back to him upon death. Otherwise, he would have known what happened over there long ago.
Hearing this, Liu Zhian couldn't help but speed up. "We're only a few minutes' drive away from my father and Ah Qi's location. Once we get there, maybe we can find out what happened."
Liu Wen remained silent. He had an ominous feeling—a premonition he hadn't felt once since his second evolution.
A few minutes later, Liu Zhian's voice trembled slightly as he drove. "Elder!"
Hearing him, Liu Wen looked ahead and saw that the road had already been cordoned off by inspectors.
A few meters behind the inspectors, the road abruptly vanished, replaced by a massive crater fifty meters in diameter.
Liu Wen clenched his fists. "Since there's no road, we'll take another route."
Liu Zhian fell silent. He pulled out his phone; the GPS showed their destination was right here. "We didn't go to the wrong place..."
Click!
Even as he spoke, Liu Wen had already stepped out of the car.
He was expressionless. With his spiritual power, a brief, careful scan was enough to detect a familiar aura inside the crater.
The inspectors blocking the road ahead saw Liu Wen get out of the car and initially intended to go over and shoo him away.
But the moment they saw his crimson eyes, their faces paled, and they instinctively turned to flee.
As government personnel, they knew all too well how terrifying these supernatural beings had been lately.
Hum!
A terrifying pressure descended. The knees of all five inspectors buckled, and they collapsed to the ground.
Liu Wen walked right past them toward the crater.
Reaching the edge of the crater, he stepped out into the empty air.
Thud!
Instead of falling as one would expect, a ripple appeared beneath Liu Wen's foot. His powerful spiritual power supported him, allowing him to walk on air.
He walked step by step toward the center of the crater. By the time he neared the middle, he was floating just a dozen centimeters above the ground.
Staring down at the mangled corpse, which consisted of only an upper torso with a completely crushed head, Liu Wen looked at its left hand.
A silver watch was strapped to its wrist.
Whoosh!
In the sky, Liu Zhian appeared beside him, riding a purple energy hoverboard.
His expression twisted when he saw the severed upper torso.
Although the corpse's head had been completely crushed, as his son, he could still recognize Liu Jiyun's body.
"How could this happen? Who on earth did this?!" Tears welled in Liu Zhian's eyes as his trembling hands reached for the fragments of his father's skull on the ground.
He wanted to piece his father back together, but the moment he touched it, the flesh and bone fell apart.
It had been stomped on too many times, turning it so fragile that the slightest touch caused it to disintegrate.
"Ahhh!!!" Unable to contain his grief, Liu Zhian let out an anguished roar.
Yet, there was no expression on Liu Wen's face. He calmly slipped the watch off the corpse's wrist.
He held up the watch and looked at it. A crack had formed across the watch face.
The hands of the watch were frozen at 9:31.
