Chapter 99 · Volume 1

The Calm Before the Storm

Liu Wen put the watch away. Four cracks opened beneath his eyes, and four crimson eyes emerged.
“How interesting. To think a mere Yangcheng would become my son's burial ground.” His tone was calm, but blue veins bulged on his forehead.
As if suddenly remembering something, Liu Zhian quickly spoke up. “Elder, we still have a chance to save my father! Once all the Lord of Evil's items are gathered, don't we get a wish? We can resurrect him!”
Liu Wen didn't reply. His six eyes swept over their surroundings.
Hum!
A majestic surge of spiritual power swept outward from him, scanning everything within a three-kilometer radius.
In just a second, everything in the vicinity registered in his mind, including a peculiar individual hiding in the shadows and watching them.
That individual carried intense malice, along with an incredibly familiar aura—it was the Earth Mother's. It was an aura he could never forget.
Liu Wen pointed one hand toward the distance, his voice laced with gritted-teeth fury. “The Earth Mother? How laughable! Back then, I was the Pontiff of your Church of the Earth Mother, and this is how you repay me?!”
When the spiritual power swept past, over a kilometer away, on the rooftop of the tallest thirty-story building in the area...
An elderly man whose skin matched the color of the rooftop lay flat on it. Even if an ordinary person came within five meters, they would find it hard to notice anyone was there.
On his forehead, a black eye twice the size of a normal one was staring intently at Liu Wen's location.
Hum! As the spiritual power swept over him, the observing old man suddenly felt a chill run down his spine.
An expression of utter disbelief appeared on his face. “This spiritual power... How is this possible?!”
They were over a kilometer away!
The old man quickly scrambled to his feet, preparing to flee.
Hum!
Suddenly, flames erupted across his body.
“Ahhh!!!” The flames clearly had no heat, yet they charred his skin and cooked his flesh.
Compared to the physical pain, the burning agony in his mind made it impossible for him to even think.
The screaming lasted for only three seconds before the old man's spirit was completely incinerated, leaving behind nothing but a mindless, empty shell.
The flames used spiritual energy as fuel; once his spirit was completely consumed, the fire on his corpse automatically died out.
All that remained was a charred corpse curled in on itself.
Back in the middle of the crater, Liu Wen lowered his hand, his expression calm. “Zhian, Ah Qi is still alive. Your father sent him thirty meters underground. Dig him out.”
His spiritual power didn't just scan the surface; he had swept underground as well. Although physical obstacles weakened his detection range...
...he had just scanned three hundred meters deep into the earth and discovered Liu Qi, who was encased in sand right beneath them.
“Alright!” Liu Zhian wiped away his tears as a purple light drill manifested behind him.
Rumble!
He picked up Liu Jiyun's corpse and aimed the purple light drill downward. The moment it started spinning, a crater several meters deep appeared.
A second later, the drill stopped digging. Beneath it, a massive sphere of sand appeared.
Inside the sand was Liu Qi, his face blue from suffocation. “You're finally here.”
After being sent underground, Liu Jiyun had only left a tiny air vent in the sand leading to the surface, which had almost suffocated him to death.
The purple light drill reshaped itself into a rope, wrapped around Liu Qi's wrist, and pulled him up.
“Let's go. It's time to prepare. The Liu family will remember this grudge,” Liu Wen said indifferently, glancing at Liu Qi.
He walked back in the direction they had come from. Liu Zhian's purple light transformed into a three-meter-wide platform, carrying him, Liu Qi, and Liu Jiyun's corpse as they flew up out of the crater.
Liu Wen walked past the five kneeling inspectors. He didn't even spare them a glance, and the pressure that had been bearing down on them vanished.
One of the inspectors rejoiced, thinking they were being spared. He and the other four quickly scrambled to their feet, preparing to run.
Splash!
The sound of rushing water echoed through the area. Five spheres of water enveloped the five men, bringing with them a sudden, suffocating pressure.
Although the water touched the ground, not a single wet spot appeared on the concrete.
“Gurgle!” They opened their mouths, but water forced its way in, leaving them able to make only agonizing gurgles.
The five writhed in agony, eventually drowning right there on the road.
The water vanished as the black car drove off into the distance.
All that remained on the dry ground were five soaking-wet corpses.
Five thousand meters up in the sky, in the high altitude that no one paid attention to...
...several crows, spaced a kilometer apart, monitored everything below.
From the moment the Church of the Earth Mother located Liu Jiyun, to his death, and then Liu Wen's return, it had been watching the entire time.
Church of the Earth Mother, Zhang Yi... You were too confident in your own side's strength, actually leaving someone behind to be targeted by Liu Wen. The crow's expression was placid.
If they hadn't left that old man behind to observe, Liu Wen might not have been able to find out who killed his son so quickly.
As this thought crossed its mind, a cold glint appeared in the crow's eyes. The more arrogant they were, the more miserable their deaths would be.
While it was observing, another crow flew past, carrying a hexagonal stone carving in its beak.
Including this one found on a rooftop, it now had three Lord of Evil items in its possession, as well as the golden dragon-head ring that would be sold to it the day after tomorrow.
After the Church of the Earth Mother killed Liu Jiyun, a bizarre peace fell over Yangcheng.
As for the crystals obtained by Zhang Yi's side, the moment anyone tried to use them, they would immediately be possessed by the Lord of Evil's consciousness.
Even the Earth Priests, who possessed the Earth Mother's blessed power, could not resist the possession.
Once possessed, the Lord of Evil refused to cooperate with them in finding the items, slowing their progress to a crawl.
Meanwhile, the chimpanzee Ah Dong was busy proselytizing with Lin Yuanshan, showing absolutely no interest in competing for the remaining items.
As for Tang Yongyun, he was leading his men to prepare a massive blow against the Church of the Earth Mother, leaving him with no time to search for other items.
Until night fell, not a single explosion or disturbance was reported in Yangcheng.
Meanwhile, at an airport in a small coastal city of the Nanming Kingdom...
...three foreigners, two men and one woman, were lining up to board a plane with tense expressions.
Once they were inside the cabin, the leading young white man let out a sigh of relief and spoke in his native tongue, “Their security is too tight. We couldn't get in at all.”
“It's not that we didn't try. Just in this city alone, a ton of Security Bureau agents showed up. Three of our teams have already been captured. If we didn't run, we'd be next,” an ordinary-looking white woman beside him added.
Vrrr!
As they spoke, the engines roared to life.
As the plane took off, a Black man who had remained silent until now spoke up. “Alright, now we're finally out of danger. Even if those captured guys get traded back, they won't be able to work in this industry anymore. We should count ourselves lucky.”
They were agents dispatched by the Coalition, but the Nanming Kingdom had set a trap for them long ago. Direct flights to Yangcheng had been suspended.
They could only land in cities near Yangcheng, but as soon as they got off the plane, over a hundred agents were arrested, and many others were detained within twenty-four hours of landing.
When facing the supernatural, the Nanming Kingdom was powerless, but dealing with the Coalition was still child's play.
While they were talking, there was absolutely no sound around them. Although the cabin was fully packed, it felt as though they were the only three people there.
Despite being trained agents, their perception in this cabin seemed to have been shrouded by something.
Next to them, a middle-aged fat man sat quietly, motionless and not breathing.
His eyes were wide open with terror, as if he had been scared to death by something.
Not just him—everyone on the plane except for the three agents had been scared to death.
In the back of the cabin, a 2.3-meter-tall sheep-man covered in thick black fur and solid muscle stood quietly. It turned its head toward the three agents, its mouth splitting open.
It revealed an extremely exaggerated, bone-chilling grin.
