Chapter 97 · Volume 1

Surrounded and Killed

Hum!
“Coo, coo, coo!”
“Chirp, chirp, chirp!”
“Caw, caw, caw!”
Outside, cars occasionally drove past, accompanied by the constant chirping of birds and insects.
Liu Jiyun lay there. He had chosen this location on purpose; it was far from the city center, yet close enough that he could quickly receive news if anything major happened.
Dozens of Night Slaves stood guard around the house.
Listening to the noises outside, Liu Jiyun grabbed a handful of hemostatic pills from the adjacent table and swallowed them with some water.
After taking his medicine, he leaned back in his chair, narrowing his eyes as he prepared to sleep.
As he drifted off, the chirping of the insects and birds faded away, and even the sounds of passing traffic vanished.
“Uncle... Uncle... Wake up... Something's wrong...” A weak voice rang in his ear just as he was about to fall asleep.
“Uncle!!!” The voice suddenly spiked in volume, causing Liu Jiyun to snap his eyes open.
He looked over at Liu Qi, who had somehow managed to struggle into a sitting position on the sofa.
Liu Qi stared at him with a solemn expression. “The Night Slaves' presence... it's gone!”
They possessed the spiritual imprints given to them by Liu Wen, which allowed them to control the Night Slaves and monitor their life signs.
Just a moment ago, he had sensed all the surrounding Night Slaves perish within the span of three seconds.
They had been scattered all around, not gathered in one place.
To kill them all in such a short time, the enemy must have brought a massive force—or possessed strength great enough to wipe out scattered Night Slaves across multiple locations in three seconds.
Either way, it was not something two heavily injured men could handle.
With a grim expression, Liu Jiyun stood up. Sand rapidly seeped out from beneath his feet. Though there wasn't much of it, it spread across the surrounding area within a dozen seconds.
Fifty meters away from their house, behind a small single-room shack.
Two young men stood there expressionlessly. At that moment, a few grains of sand bumped into their feet and automatically flowed around them.
The grains of sand were too tiny, and since the two men were entirely focused on the house in the distance, they failed to notice.
Inside the house, Liu Jiyun felt the feedback from the sand, and his grim expression turned pale.
He looked at Liu Qi and let out a bitter laugh. “Ah Qi, we were too careless. It looks like we won't escape this disaster. What a pity... the Elder is still an hour away.”
As he spoke, he pulled out his phone, intending to call Liu Wen.
But there was no signal at all. The authorities had already jammed the signals in this area to prevent any complications.
Hearing this, Liu Qi showed no fear. He merely sighed. “Unbelievable. I never thought I'd die in a dump like this. If I'd known, I would have just died in the subway station.”
While they were talking, on a third-floor rooftop two hundred meters away.
Zhang Yi stood there, with three men and women standing behind him.
Pfft!
Zhang Yi's head began to mutate. Vertical slits tore open across his nose, revealing thirteen eyes, one of which was a deathly pale white.
His back split open like a leather suit, exposing the black flesh within.
“Come. The Earth Mother will remember your sacrifice,” Zhang Yi said calmly.
Behind him, the three individuals nodded, walking toward Zhang Yi's split back with fanatical expressions.
As the first person stepped inside him, another of Zhang Yi's eyes turned white, and his body swelled. Thick blue veins bulged across his left hand, and the muscles in his arm rapidly ballooned to four or five times their original size.
A ten-centimeter-wide circular hole of flesh opened up in his enlarged palm, within which green energy was already swirling.
The second person entered, and the exterior of his body turned a shade of blue, his flesh shifting to absorb radiation from the air more rapidly to regenerate itself.
The third person entered, and Zhang Yi's feet left the ground as he floated into the air.
Out of his thirteen originally yellow eyes, four had now turned white.
A grotesque grin spread across his face. “You caught us off guard last time, but now I will show you the true power of an Archbishop of the Earth Mother!”
His back healed shut, and his body returned to its normal size, save for his left arm.
Aiming his left hand at the two-story house two hundred meters away, green light began to pool in his palm. The blue hue on his skin started absorbing the surrounding radiation, amplifying the power of the green light.
Hum!
The green light expanded, forming a dazzling sphere of green energy.
Inside the small two-story house, Liu Jiyun suddenly whipped his head to the left. A green speck of light had appeared in that direction, and the moment he saw it, a faint sense of impending doom washed over him.
Behind the green light, he spotted Zhang Yi hovering in the air.
“That bastard!” Liu Jiyun clenched his fists tightly.
Rumble!
A massive torrent of sand surged from beneath his feet, wrapping around the perimeter of the house to block any outside line of sight.
Liu Jiyun rushed over to Liu Qi, grabbed him, and said urgently, “Don't make a sound. He's targeting me. Instead of both of us dying here, at least one of us should survive!”
Without waiting for Liu Qi to reply, he slammed him down onto the sand-covered floor.
Thud!
With a dull thud, Liu Qi was swallowed by the sand as if falling into water, sinking rapidly into the ground.
Boom! Just as he finished doing this...
Outside.
Zhang Yi had finished charging his attack. A half-meter-wide sphere of green energy swirled violently in his left hand.
He glared at the sand-shrouded two-story house and roared, “Die!!!”
Whoosh!
The energy sphere shot forward at supersonic speed, slamming into the sand in an instant.
Hum!
The green energy expanded, instantly consuming the house and spreading outward.
There was no earth-shattering explosion, only silent, absolute destruction.
Ten meters, twenty meters, fifty meters...
Wooo!
Once the green energy expanded to fifty meters, the entire surrounding area for hundreds of meters was illuminated in a sickly green glow.
This phenomenon lasted for only a second before abruptly vanishing. Everything it had covered vanished with it, leaving a powerful gale rushing backward to fill the vacuum.
A crater fifty meters in diameter and ten meters deep lay in its place.
Within that zone, the original concrete building had completely disintegrated.
Only a small patch of sand squirmed at the bottom, and Liu Jiyun's upper body emerged from it.
His face was even paler than before. His lower body was a bloody mess, with his pulsating internal organs clearly visible.
Spurt!
He spat out a mouthful of blood mixed with fragments of his internal organs.
He stared up at the sun in the sky, his vision darkening.
If he hadn't been heavily injured by Tang Yongyun, an attack of this level wouldn't have been able to scratch him.
Step!
Footsteps echoed around him as a one-eyed man, crawling on the ground and covered in slime, emerged.
More footsteps followed. Some of the newcomers maintained human forms, while others had completely transformed into monsters.
They surrounded the dying Liu Jiyun.
Zhang Yi descended from the sky, landing right next to Liu Jiyun's head. “Was the other one blown to ashes?”
Thud!
But he didn't care. Looking down at Liu Jiyun, he raised his foot and stomped hard on his head.
He didn't use his full strength, only stomping enough to make Liu Jiyun's head bleed. Liu Jiyun didn't even have the strength to scream.
Thud! Thud! Thud!
“Hahaha! Hahahaha!!!” Zhang Yi stomped on Liu Jiyun's head again and again until it caved in, exposing white brain matter.
An imperceptible ripple of energy drifted from Liu Jiyun's body, attempting to enter Zhang Yi's.
However, the moment it drew near, it was blocked. The Earth Mother's will already resided within Zhang Yi's body.
She would not allow external forces to lay hands on her property.
Shut out, the invisible force began to condense in front of Zhang Yi, soon forming a thumb-sized, diamond-shaped yellow crystal.
Clatter!
The yellow crystal clattered to the ground at Zhang Yi's feet, but he seemed completely oblivious, continuing to stomp with a manic expression.
Only when his feet were drenched in blood and tears streamed from his eyes did he slowly stop. “Peng Fei, Tong Lin... look. I've avenged you...”
He wasn't crying solely for his friends. His experiences during that period in Ningcheng had left a deeper mark on him than the previous twenty-odd years of his life combined.
It was the turning point of his life. If not for the Liu family and that existence, he would never have become like this.
Zhang Yi's thirteen eyes contracted, and the tears on his face vanished. Soon, Liu Wen. You're next!
As for taking revenge on the ultimate mastermind behind the scenes, he didn't even dare to think about it. Only after becoming supernatural did he truly understand how terrifying that existence was.
Summoning the Earth Mother out of thin air—a feat like that was more than enough to qualify them as a god or even a creator.
Glancing down at Liu Jiyun's crushed head and the yellow crystal pulsing with unique energy at his feet...
Zhang Yi made a grasping motion in the air, and the yellow Sequence crystal flew into his hand.
Turning around to leave, Zhang Yi said, “Let's go. It's time to prepare for tonight's events.”
He didn't burn the body to ashes. He wanted to leave Liu Jiyun's corpse behind to give Liu Wen a memory he would never forget.
