Yue Shi and Bai Wanyang bantered and chatted along the way, their relationship becoming visibly more comfortable.
At the very least, Bai Wanyang wasn't as stiff as before.
Once the pickup truck turned onto a relatively wide main road, Yue Shi accelerated again.
Simultaneously, through the vision of a raven, he caught a fleeting glimpse of a Bee Woman's face. He commanded the raven to give chase, but the creature vanished into the chaotic sprawl of buildings.
Many people living in the Chaos Zone noticed the vehicle Yue Shi was driving. However, once they saw the Investigation Bureau logo on the side, they suppressed their restless urges.
The price of recklessly attacking the Investigation Bureau was likely more than they could afford.
After speeding along for a while longer, a massive crowd suddenly appeared on the road ahead. They were dressed in filthy, tattered clothes, their expressions vacant and numb.
These people stood in the middle of the road, forming a human wall that blocked the Investigation Bureau’s vehicle.
“Who are they? Why are they blocking the road?” Bai Wanyang asked, frowning.
“They’re all vagrants from the Chaos Zone. They look like they’ve lost their minds. They’re probably being controlled and were sent here specifically to intercept us,” Yue Shi said.
Bai Wanyang’s brow furrowed. “Did news of us coming to the Chaos Zone to investigate the Queen Bee leak? Is the enemy trying to strike first?”
“Maybe,” Yue Shi said nonchalantly.
Bai Wanyang asked, “What do we do now? Since they’re blocking the path, should we take a detour?”
“Detour? Watch this!” Yue Shi rolled down the window and roared at the crowd ahead, “Get out of the way if you don’t want to die!”
This shout was purely physical; he didn't use Raven's Secret Whispers.
Unsurprisingly, the crowd ahead didn't budge, remaining frozen in place like statues.
Bai Wanyang looked at Yue Shi as if he were an idiot. “It seems orders from the Investigation Bureau don’t carry much weight in the Chaos Zone.”
Yue Shi nodded. “I didn't expect it to work. I was just giving them a warning.”
“A warning for what?” Bai Wanyang was puzzled.
The corners of Yue Shi’s mouth curled into a vicious and cruel smile. To warn them, of course... that Death had arrived!
At that moment, another group of vagrants appeared behind the vehicle, blocking the other end of the road. Now, even a detour was impossible.
Bai Wanyang hadn't expected to encounter such a dire situation on his first trip to the Chaos Zone. He felt a bit lost.
Recalling the lessons Ling Xun had given him recently, he turned around and picked up a supernatural detector from the back seat.
Once the detector was on, the indicator light immediately glowed red, flashing at a relatively low frequency. This indicated that supernatural aura was present nearby, but it wasn't particularly intense.
“In this situation, it means these people should be contaminated individuals suffering from supernatural contamination, right?” Bai Wanyang said uncertainly.
Yue Shi looked at Bai Wanyang like he was an idiot. “Who cares about that?”
“Huh?” Bai Wanyang’s face was full of innocent confusion. “I’m just following standard procedure here.”
“Standard procedures only apply inside the city. Who cares about that in the Chaos Zone?” A flicker of killing intent surfaced in Yue Shi’s eyes.
Then, he floored the accelerator. The pickup truck let out a roaring hum and surged forward violently.
Thud! Thud! Thud!
Crunch... crunch...
The crowd blocking the road was plowed over. Some were sent flying, while others were crushed beneath the wheels. Crimson blood sprayed everywhere, staining the bulletproof windshield a filthy red.
Yue Shi completely ignored whether anyone lived or died, charging through with reckless abandon. The dense crowd was crushed into pulp, and the air was filled with an endless string of shrill wails.
“Awesome!”
After plowing through the crowd, the pickup truck drove steadily. No one else came out to block the way.
Sitting in the passenger seat, Bai Wanyang was dumbfounded. He hadn't expected Yue Shi to use such a violent solution. Looking at the long streaks of blood the tires left on the ground, he felt his scalp go numb.
But it wasn't over. Yue Shi suddenly shifted into reverse and slammed the gas again.
The vehicle sped backward, crashing into the group of people who had blocked them from behind at high speed.
Yet, these vagrants seemed as if they feared neither pain nor death. Even as they were broken into pieces, they tried to stop the car with their dying breaths. Some even reached their hands under the tires, only to be ruthlessly crushed to powder.
Yue Shi drove back and forth repeatedly. Amidst the continuous thuds, he ran over every single person who had blocked the road, leaving them all either dead or severely injured.
“This is what happens when you dare to block my path!” Yue Shi’s malice was almost entirely unconcealed.
Beside him, Bai Wanyang shivered. He wasn't exactly scared, but he couldn't help but feel...
Bang!
A sudden gunshot interrupted Bai Wanyang’s slightly chaotic thoughts. A white mark appeared on the bulletproof windshield directly in front of Yue Shi, surrounded by a spiderweb of cracks, though the glass wasn't pierced.
The bullet had been aimed directly at Yue Shi’s head.
Yue Shi’s somewhat manic expression instantly turned cold.
Bai Wanyang’s expression also changed drastically. Although Yue Shi acted like a twisted murderer, at least he was one of their own and someone he could talk to.
The enemy was the true source of danger!
Bai Wanyang and Yue Shi scanned the surroundings, trying to find the location of the sniper.
But just then, the car suddenly hit a bump, followed by a violent shaking as if it were about to be flipped over.
“There’s something under the car!” Yue Shi blurted out.
“Look!” Bai Wanyang pointed out the window.
The people Yue Shi had just run over were now slowly standing up.
Their eyes were wide, the eyeballs bulging and splitting into countless tiny hexagons. Their jawbones cracked open with a series of clicks as new mouthparts sprouted from torn gums.
Black patterns writhed beneath their exposed skin, the protruding veins looking like animated thorns. Their arm joints let out a sound like popping popcorn as they bent at angles that defied human anatomy. The blood flowing from their wounds turned from red to a pale gold.
At the same time, their backs humped as translucent membranous wings tore through flesh and unfurled. The blood-streaked wings vibrated, emitting a high-frequency hum.
The people Yue Shi had crushed under the wheels had undergone this exact mutation. Their bodies struggled incessantly, causing the vehicle to shake violently.
Seeing this, Bai Wanyang’s breathing grew ragged. Certain unforgettable memories surged in his mind. He remembered many of his classmates and friends who had turned into these half-human, half-bee monsters, losing their sanity and attacking every living person around them.
