Chapter 333 · Volume 1

Drinking Poison to Quench Thirst

“Mr. A?”
Upon hearing this name, a low gasp rippled through the conference room.
Many immediately understood the implications of this proposal, their faces clouding with complex expressions.
The high-level executive who made the proposal said, “In all past tests, the priority of Mr. A's ability has shown absolute suppression over supernatural phenomena.”
“He perceives the supernatural as non-existent and forces the supernatural within his observation range to be invalidated. If we let him see the moon...”
“That is too risky,” a conservative executive immediately interrupted, his expression grim.
“Mr. A's stability is built on the foundation of perceiving a ‘normal world.’ His ability is a double-edged sword; we must never let him clearly realize the existence of the supernatural.”
“We don’t know what would happen if he learns about it. Would the moon be invalidated, or would his ability collapse and trigger an even more terrifying disaster? We cannot afford that risk.”
“Risk?” another radical executive stood up, slamming the table, his eyes bloodshot.
“You old fossil, can’t you open your eyes and look outside? Look at the damage reports! Every second, cities are falling into riots, people are killing each other, and the surface temperature won't hold for much longer.”
“The elites we sent out have either lost contact or turned into thugs. Order has collapsed, and civilization has regressed to the age of beasts. This is our reality.”
“Risk? Is there any risk greater than sitting here and waiting for everything to be destroyed?”
“But if something goes wrong with Mr. A's Blind Folly, it might trigger a disaster no less catastrophic than the moon's contamination. His very existence is something we cannot understand,” the conservative argued firmly.
“Then should we just do nothing and sit here waiting to die? Any possible method, even with only a one-in-ten-thousand chance, must be tried. This is our last opportunity,” the radical refused to back down.
The debate quickly reached a fever pitch.
Voices of support and opposition intertwined, as each side had its own justifications.
Someone suggested that under strict control, Mr. A could be allowed to observe the moon indirectly through screen images.
But this was immediately countered; the effect might be insufficient, and it carried the same cognitive risks.
Finally, everyone's gaze turned toward the Minister.
Ever since Mr. A was mentioned, the Minister had remained silent.
Regarding Mr. A, many tests had been conducted when headquarters first found him. Forcing him to recognize the existence of the supernatural had been one of those tests.
No one knew exactly what happened when Mr. A clearly realized the existence of the supernatural.
The Minister himself had intervened and completely formatted everyone's relevant memories; even he had not retained that memory.
In short, Mr. A's file strictly prohibited letting him realize the existence of the supernatural, warning that it would trigger a world-ending calamity.
Thinking of this, the Minister slowly raised his head, his gaze sweeping over everyone present.
At this moment, the world was suffering a world-ending calamity triggered by the moon.
Would employing Mr. A terminate the moon's anomaly, or would it trigger another world-ending disaster?
If another disaster was truly triggered, would the two different calamities counteract each other, or would they... accelerate the end of the world?
Time passed in silent deliberation, each second feeling agonizingly long.
Finally, the Minister spoke, his voice heavy: “Let us vote. Those in favor of the proposal to employ Mr. A, please raise your hands.”
A brief, dead silence followed.
One hand was raised firmly—the executive who had first suggested using Mr. A.
Immediately after, several other radical executives also raised their hands.
The opponents looked pale and defeated, but no one spoke up to object further.
The Minister silently counted; more than two-thirds.
“The proposal is passed.”
“Act immediately to guide Mr. A to observe the moon. At the same time, do everything possible to prevent him from recognizing the existence of the supernatural.”
“The Action Group will be under my direct command.”
...
Taoyuan Island.
Mr. A lay quietly on the bed in his bedroom, his breathing steady and long, in a deep sleep.
Ever since the anomalous celestial phenomenon appeared, to ensure everything was foolproof and prevent Mr. A from coming into contact with any anomalies, headquarters had not only used artificial clouds to obscure Taoyuan Island but had also added sleeping pills to his diet.
He had been sleeping peacefully like this for quite some time.
The bedroom door was opened quietly, and several headquarters agents entered quickly.
Secretary Wang followed behind, holding a specialized syringe, an extremely solemn expression on their face.
Without unnecessary words, the agents skillfully brought Mr. A to a designated location.
Upon arrival, the secretary injected a tube of transparent medicine.
After a moment, Mr. A's eyelids began to flutter.
“Mr. A? Wake up.” Secretary Wang's voice was kept as gentle as possible.
Mr. A slowly opened his eyes, his gaze vacant and filled with drowsiness.
“Is that you? Why are you here? Is something wrong?”
He looked around blankly, discovering he was not in his own bedroom but in a place resembling a small living room.
The decor was minimalist, with only a few chairs and a table. The only light source was a dim ceiling lamp, and the curtains were drawn tight.
Following the plan, Secretary Wang quickly spoke the pre-written, reasonable excuse.
“We are at the home of an old friend of yours; he lives in the suburbs.”
“The community just notified us of an emergency evacuation drill due to a potential risk of an underground pipe leak. It was very rushed.”
“Sorry, it was sudden. You were sleeping so soundly that I didn't wake you and brought you straight here.”
“Evacuation drill? Pipe leak?” Mr. A rubbed his temples, his thoughts still somewhat sluggish.
He vaguely felt something was off, but a long period of normal life in an environment of truth, goodness, and beauty had given him a habitual trust in the secretary and official statements.
Furthermore, he did feel groggy, as if he had been in an exceptionally deep sleep.
“What time is it now? How is it outside?”
“It's around three in the morning. The leak has been contained; it was a false alarm.” As the secretary spoke, they signaled to the agents nearby.
An agent walked to the window and carefully pulled back a corner of the curtain, revealing the sky outside.
The agent adjusted the angle to ensure Mr. A could see the moon without exposing too much of his body to the moonlight.
Secretary Wang pointed toward the sky, the tone natural.
“Look, Mr. A, the moonlight is beautiful tonight.”
Mr. A instinctively looked in the direction the secretary was pointing.
Through the window, he saw a dull, grayish sphere hanging in the night sky, emitting a dim glow.
Was that the moon?
Why were there no patches visible on its surface? The color was so uniform.
It seemed to be the moon, hanging in the sky in an ordinary and normal way.
But, was tonight supposed to be a full moon?
The moment Mr. A's gaze landed on the moon...
The rules of Blind Folly took effect immediately.
The supernatural moon outside the window was temporarily stripped of all non-natural attributes.
All mystery, all anomalies, and everything exceeding the conventional laws of physics were rationalized into the most common-sense existence.
The extreme evil contamination that twisted the mind vanished; it was now nothing more than the most ordinary moonlight.
Headquarters' supernatural detectors stopped blaring; under Mr. A's gaze, the moon had temporarily returned to normal.
“It feels a bit strange.”
“When will the drill end? I want to go back to sleep. My head hurts.”
Mr. A muttered softly, letting out a yawn as his drowsiness clearly hadn't fully dissipated.
The secretary and the agents had already received word from headquarters that the moon's anomaly had been suppressed.
A surge of wild joy rose in their hearts. It worked—at least for now, the moon had lost its terrifying power of contamination!
“Mr. A, if you are really too tired, you can rest here,” the secretary said with a smile.
Though the words were said, the secretary would do everything possible to keep Mr. A from falling asleep.
The moon required Mr. A's continuous observation.
Just as the secretary was about to find a topic to chat with Mr. A...
Mr. A's body suddenly stiffened.
He remained in the posture of looking at the moon through the window, motionless.
The remaining drowsiness and blankness on his face vanished, replaced by a hollow, void-like expression.
His eyes lost their luster, reflecting the now-ordinary moon outside.
“Mr. A?” The secretary was startled and hurried to nudge him.
Mr. A did not react, remaining in a daze.
Then, without his mouth moving, a voice emerged.
“The fruit has ripened. Initiation of harvest.”
