The members of the Order Maintenance Team were stunned, but their shock was immediately replaced by a surge of wild joy!
The Landlord was right!
As long as they stayed within the building’s perimeter, they would be safe!
“Don’t run! Nobody run! Do you see?! The bullets can’t get in!” they shouted at the top of their lungs.
“Stay against the wall! Don’t go out there and get yourselves killed!”
This time, no one ran.
The surviving vagrants, including those who had been scared out of their wits moments ago, scrambled to press themselves against the base of the wall, wishing they could sink into the concrete.
They watched with a mixture of terror and awe as the soldiers continued to fire wildly, yet were unable to harm them in the slightest.
“Keep firing! Don’t stop!” Lin Hai roared from behind.
The soldiers were also dumbfounded.
They watched as the bullets weirdly hovered and fell in front of the building, completely unable to comprehend what was happening.
“What the hell is that?!”
“We can’t get through! We can’t get through at all!”
“There’s something wrong with this building! Commander! There’s something wrong with this building!”
However, before they could react—
On the roof, the four “Sentry” Type Automated Defensive Machine Gun Turrets turned simultaneously!
The triple infrared/thermal/motion sensing system locked onto every firing target in an instant!
The blue standby lights suddenly turned a piercing red!
“Open fire.”
Su Wan’s cold voice issued the command through her consciousness.
“Rat-tat-tat-tat—!”
The four rotary machine guns roared in unison! Tongues of fire poured down from the four corners of the roof like metal whips!
The 7.62mm bullets formed an impenetrable curtain of lead, sweeping across the City Defense Force soldiers who didn't have time to react!
“Ahhh—!!!”
Screams erupted instantly!
The soldiers’ alloy bulletproof armor was like paper before the dense hail of bullets, and blood mist exploded across the ruins one after another!
One figure after another collapsed, twitched, and then went completely still!
Some tried to find cover, but in these ruins that had been repeatedly plowed by artillery, there was nowhere to hide from such overwhelming firepower.
Others tried to turn and run, but before they could even take a step, they were torn to shreds by the barrage!
The soldiers on the two “Predator” armored vehicles tried to operate the vehicle-mounted cannons to fight back, but the firing angle of the cannons couldn't reach the roof at all!
“Abandon vehicle! Abandon vehicle!” the tank commander screamed at the top of his lungs.
But the moment they opened the hatches, they were accurately picked off by the Sentries’ fire!
Dense bullet holes erupted on the armored vehicles' alloy hulls like a honeycomb!
A fuel tank was hit, and a ball of fire soared into the sky!
“Boom—!!!”
The violent explosion flipped the entire armored vehicle over, sending debris flying in all directions!
In less than thirty seconds.
Twelve City Defense Force elites, wiped out.
Two “Predator” armored vehicles, reduced to burning wreckage.
Only the lingering smoke, the pungent smell of blood, and the slightly twitching corpses remained in the ruins.
Silence.
A deathly silence.
The vagrants huddled against the wall stared with wide eyes and open mouths, unable to make a sound.
What had they just seen?
Those four weapons that suddenly appeared on the roof had completely wiped out a fully armed elite unit in just half a minute...
Was this... the building’s defense?
The Landlord’s handiwork?
Someone’s legs gave out, and they fell to their knees.
“A god... this is a god...”
Someone murmured under their breath.
In the distance, Liu Sen’s face could no longer be described as just ugly.
It was deathly pale.
The six members of the “Night Owl” squad beside him also dropped their previously relaxed expressions.
The scarred-face man narrowed his eyes, staring at the silent gray building. He licked his lips and said in a raspy voice:
“Lieutenant Liu... your intel is going to be the death of us.”
Liu Sen didn't speak.
His fingers were trembling, his lips were trembling, his whole body was trembling.
Twelve men, two armored vehicles, just gone.
In less than thirty seconds.
And that building... not even a single window in that building was broken!
The scarred-face captain stared intently at the gray building in the distance, his mind rapidly analyzing the one-sided slaughter that had just occurred.
“Re... retreat...” Liu Sen finally found his voice, which was as raspy as a broken bellows. “Retreat—”
“Retreat? Why?”
The scarred-face man sneered and interrupted him.
He rolled his neck, his bones making a crisp cracking sound.
“Lieutenant Liu,” the scarred-face man spoke, his voice raspy but certain, “what are you afraid of?”
“Are you afraid that there’s a high-level Ability User in that building we can’t resist?”
Cold sweat poured down Liu Sen’s forehead. “Am I wrong? That barrier... those machine guns...”
“The barrier is real, and the machine guns are real,” the scarred-face man narrowed his eyes.
“But don’t you find it strange? If there really was an Ability User in that building capable of deploying such a large-scale defensive barrier... they would have to be at least Level 5.”
He paused and continued, “I’ve traveled far and wide for many years, and I’ve only ever heard of Level 5 powerhouses; I’ve never actually seen one.”
“People like that—forget about us—even the big shots in the Inner City would have to treat them with the utmost respect.”
“But think about it. If the owner of that building really was Level 5, would they really be hiding on the edge of the Ruin Zone, guarding a single building and letting people like us come to their door and provoke them?”
Liu Sen followed his line of reasoning, and his cold sweat subsided slightly. “You mean...”
“I mean, that barrier is likely some kind of high-tech weapon,” the scarred-face man said with certainty. “Not an ability!”
To some extent, the scarred-face man’s analysis was actually correct.
He counted them off on his fingers as if listing his own treasures. “I’ve seen people from ‘Holy Shield’ in the east. They have a portable energy shield generator the size of a fist that can block ability attacks below Level 3.”
“In the north, I’ve heard of the ‘Deep Space Society’ digging up force field projectors from Old Era ruins that can simulate realistic energy barriers.”
“There are even some Old Age military armaments circulating in the black market that have things capable of generating regional defensive fields.”
He looked at Liu Sen and grinned, revealing his yellow teeth. “The owner of that building most likely got lucky and dug up a treasure like that. Relying on that thing, they managed to survive the shelling and intimidate those vagrants.”
After hearing this, Liu Sen felt it made sense.
If the owner of that building was really that strong, how could they have shown them so much respect?
They would have slapped them all to death long ago.
“Then what do we do now?” Liu Sen asked.
The scarred-face man looked at the tall man who had remained silent behind him.
The ace of the Night Owl squad, Level 3 Ability User Ma Jun, code-named ‘Severance.’
“Old Ma, can your ability handle that thing?”
Ma Jun slowly raised his head, his gaze falling upon the gray building.
