The man’s indifference allowed Su Wan to breathe a sigh of relief.
It seemed this Level 4 man hadn’t discovered the energy fluctuations within her.
From this, she inferred that he wasn’t as strong as she was.
Su Wan’s heartbeat remained steady, and her breathing was normal.
“Brother, you’re here?”
Gu Huaian stood up, a gentle smile on his face and his tone affectionate.
“Come, let me introduce you.”
He walked to the Level 4 man’s side and turned slightly, his posture respectful.
“This is Mr. Zhou, an old friend of the Gu family and a close companion of Father’s during his lifetime.”
Mr. Zhou?
Su Wan lowered her eyes, committing the surname to memory.
Zhou Yuanqi nodded slightly, acknowledging them.
His gaze swept across Gu Huaiyu’s face and then past Su Wan without lingering for a moment.
Gu Huaiyu clearly didn’t know this man.
His father had made many acquaintances during his life—people in business, personal friends, and various interests—too many to count.
It was impossible for him to know every single one.
“Hello, Mr. Zhou.” He nodded, his tone neither cold nor warm.
Gu Huaian then introduced Yin Ji, Meng Changhe, and Wen Ruoan in turn.
“These three are Mr. Zhou’s subordinates. They’ve come to Jiangcheng together this time to inspect a project.”
Yin Ji didn’t move, but Meng Changhe stood up and extended his hand toward Gu Huaiyu.
“Young Master Gu, it’s a pleasure to finally meet you.”
Gu Huaiyu shook his hand briefly and gave a perfunctory “Welcome.”
Su Wan stood behind Gu Huaiyu like a ghost.
No one looked at her, no one asked about her, and no one felt she was worth a second glance.
This was exactly what she wanted.
“Brother, have a seat.” Gu Huaian invited Gu Huaiyu to sit, his gaze passing over Su Wan with a gentle smile on his lips.
“Miss Su, please sit as well. Don’t be a stranger.”
Su Wan nodded slightly and sat in the chair next to Gu Huaiyu.
A servant came forward to pour tea.
The fragrance of the tea curled upward, mixing with the scent of sandalwood in the front hall, slowly permeating the air.
Zhou Yuanqi picked up his teacup, took a sip, and spoke.
“Huaian, when your father was alive, he spoke to me about that plot of land.”
His voice was deep, his pace measured, carrying a weight that commanded respect without needing to be loud.
“The plot in North City is currently under the Gu Corporation’s name and is your responsibility?”
Gu Huaian nodded. “Yes, Mr. Zhou.”
“The preliminary preparations for the site have been completed. We’re just waiting for your team to move in.”
Zhou Yuanqi gave a small grunt of affirmation and set down his teacup.
“The progress needs to be accelerated.”
“The project cannot be delayed any longer.”
Gu Huaian’s back stiffened slightly before returning to normal.
“Understood, Mr. Zhou.”
Su Wan sat to the side, listening quietly.
The plot in North City, the project, the progress, the team moving in…
Every word fit perfectly with the information she had heard last night.
Meanwhile, Gu Huaiyu’s expression was becoming increasingly unsightly.
From the moment he heard the words “that plot,” his expression had darkened inch by inch.
This plot in North City, spanning one hundred and twenty-seven acres, originally belonged to the Su Corporation. It was the asset Su Zhenhua had valued most during his life, the one he refused to sell no matter what.
For the sake of this land, the Gu family had allied with the Bai family and spent nearly a year using every connection they had to eventually drive the Su family to a dead end.
That plot was the fuse for the Su family’s destruction and the last asset Su Zhenhua and his wife hadn’t had time to deal with before their car accident.
His father had valued this land above all else while he was alive, yet he never spoke much of it to Gu Huaiyu.
He had only told him to cooperate—to sign when needed, to provide funds when needed—and not to ask or think too much.
He had handed the Gu Corporation over to him, yet he had given this land and this project to Gu Huaian.
On what basis?
Gu Huaiyu’s fingers tightened on his knees, his knuckles turning white from the strain.
Zhou Yuanqi set down his teacup and looked at Gu Huaian.
“Huaian, regarding this land… I haven’t been to the site yet.”
“Since we have time today, take us over there to have a look.”
Gu Huaian immediately nodded, his posture respectful. “Yes, Mr. Zhou. I’ll arrange it right away.”
Gu Huaian was efficient. Within two minutes, Zhou Yuanqi’s group of four was led out of the living room, preparing to take the arranged cars to the site.
Gu Huaian followed behind Zhou Yuanqi’s group. As he passed Gu Huaiyu, he leaned in slightly and whispered to him in a low voice.
“Brother, during the few days Mr. Zhou’s group is in Jiangcheng, they will be staying and eating at the Gu residence.”
“Arrange the luncheon, and I’ll leave the preparations for their accommodations to you as well.”
“Mr. Zhou is of noble status and must not be slighted. You must put in extra effort.”
His tone was gentle, as if he were assigning a trivial task.
Gu Huaiyu’s face was livid.
But Gu Huaian didn’t wait for a response before turning to walk out of the hall.
He knew Gu Huaiyu hadn’t given up and was still thinking of arranging a meeting between Su Wan and Su Zhuo, or even trying to reopen Su Zhuo’s case.
At such a critical time, he could not allow even the slightest unstable factor to appear.
He had to give Gu Huaiyu things to do so that he wouldn’t have time to do anything stupid.
Gu Huaian thought to himself—it seemed the company’s affairs weren’t keeping him busy enough!
But that was fine; he would make sure Gu Huaiyu became busy very soon!
Watching the group’s retreating backs, Gu Huaiyu stood in place, unmoving.
His chest heaved violently, and his jaw muscles were clamped shut. He had so much he wanted to say, so much rage he wanted to vent.
But logic controlled him.
This land and this project were what his father had traded his life for; they were the Gu family’s most important layout for the next ten years.
He couldn’t ruin the family’s grand plans because of his own emotions.
Gu Huaiyu took a deep breath, and then another, before he barely managed to suppress the surging fury.
He looked out into the courtyard and saw that Zhou Yuanqi’s group had already boarded the cars.
Gu Huaian was standing by the first car, saying something to his personal bodyguard.
The bodyguard nodded slightly, his gaze crossing Gu Huaian’s shoulder to look at Su Wan, who was standing behind Gu Huaiyu.
Gu Huaiyu’s heart sank suddenly.
A bad premonition flooded his mind.
He walked quickly to Su Wan’s side and said softly,
“Wanwan, go back to the East Wing and rest first. I’ll come find you after I handle things here.”
Su Wan didn’t speak.
Her gaze went over Gu Huaiyu’s shoulder, landing on the cars in the courtyard.
By then, the bodyguard was already walking toward the front hall.
Gu Huaiyu’s expression also changed when he saw the bodyguard returning.
He turned around, blocking the doorway and staring at the approaching bodyguard.
“What are you doing back here?”
The bodyguard stopped at the bottom of the steps and nodded slightly in a respectful posture.
“Eldest Young Master, the Second Young Master has sent me to pick up Miss Su.”
“Pick up Miss Su?” Gu Huaiyu’s voice rose a few pitches. “Pick her up to go where?”
“To North City,” the bodyguard’s voice was steady.
“Mr. Zhou’s group is going to see that plot of land. The Second Young Master said that Miss Su might be more familiar with that land than anyone else in the Gu family.”
“If there is a need for an introduction at the site, Miss Su can help.”
Gu Huaiyu’s pupils constricted.
He understood Gu Huaian’s intention almost instantly.
