Chapter 252 · Volume 1

Communicating with the Oil Painting

Early the next morning, rumors about the attack on the Lyu family spread like wildfire.
After all, with such a massive commotion last night, it was only natural for word to get out.
While this was the talk of the town among ordinary people, the news spreading within transcendent circles was even more outrageous.
The core message could be summed up in one sentence:
The Lyu family is equivalent to two sealed objects!
Even more people were now tempted.
In Great Wei, almost all known sealed objects were in official hands. The remaining families that possessed them kept them hidden and tucked away; they would never expose them so easily.
Now, not only did the Lyu family have one of their own, but they could also be used to trade for another by capturing that masked man. Who wouldn't be interested?
More and more organizations were heading toward Huangshan City.
The local Bureau Chief’s report finally reached Headquarters.
Headquarters took the news very seriously and immediately dispatched two Baleful Stars.
After all, the bounty on the so-called masked man had actually been initiated by them.
Now that there was a lead, they naturally paid close attention.
A person who could influence sealed objects had too great an impact on Great Wei. If he could not be used, he had to be destroyed!
...
“Hahaha! That food street is practically deserted now. The shop owners are out there cursing every day, and some have just abandoned their shops entirely to bring pushcarts over here to sell food near us.”
Old Liu looked smug, his eyes fixed on Yin Yang as if he were looking at a god of wealth.
The surrounding vendors felt the same way.
The moment Yin Yang’s grilled sausages sold out, these people didn't even care about their own business and jumped in to help Yin Yang pack up his stall.
“Boss Nie, I saw the weather report saying the temperature will drop tomorrow night. Make sure to keep warm.”
“That’s right, Boss Nie. This is chicken soup my wife brewed; it’s very nourishing!”
“It’s made with real free-range chicken. Take it home and try some.”
Yin Yang didn't refuse their kindness. He smiled as he took the thermos from the man.
“I’ll return this to you tomorrow.”
“Oh, no rush, no rush!”
The man watched Yin Yang ride away on his electric tricycle and sighed with emotion.
“Boss Nie makes so much money every day, yet he never raises the price of his sausages, nor does he buy a better vehicle.”
Old Liu gave him a speechless look.
“A better vehicle? We’re stall vendors; an electric tricycle is as practical as it gets.”
“He could still buy a nicer one. The new models have covers to keep out the wind and rain, and they even have air conditioning. How nice would that be?”
Old Liu curled his lip and walked back to his own stall. Yin Yang was off the clock, but they weren't.
Yin Yang rode back to his residence. After a simple meal, he sat within his makeshift altar and began attempting to communicate with the other party.
Communicating with a transcendent item was somewhat taxing because their intelligence was relatively low.
It was like trying to communicate with a human who didn't understand your language; between gestures and guessing, you could eventually understand some of the meaning.
But if the other party was a monkey, no matter how much you gestured, it would be difficult for it to understand in a short amount of time.
‘I feel your spiritual power is waning. Are you interested in making it full again?’
...
At the Lyu estate.
The oil painting, which had already been moved to a new location, flickered slightly.
It sensed someone communicating with it. Although it didn't know who the other party was, it felt a strange sense of familiarity.
In a conference room on the other side of the estate, Lyu Xiaofeng’s eyes were bloodshot, looking as if he wanted to devour someone.
Opposite him, the Old Master of the Lyu family was dozing off.
Bang!
Lyu Xiaofeng slammed the table, startling the Old Master awake and drawing everyone else’s gaze toward him.
“No matter what, the sealed object must be recovered!”
“That is the very foundation of our Lyu family!”
Hearing this, the Old Master said disdainfully, “Foundation? How many years has that thing even been with our Lyu family?”
“Which part of the Lyu family’s estate was ever won by that thing?”
“Hahahaha!”
Lyu Xiaofeng stared at him, his face flushing red with rage.
“Was it not my contribution that allowed the Lyu family to firmly establish itself in Huangshan City? Was it not its contribution?”
“If not for me, would you still be able to eat the liver of a natural transcendent?”
“Hmm?”
Sensing Lyu Xiaofeng’s increasingly powerful aura, the Old Master sneered.
“Did I beg you to become the head of this family? Or did I beg you to kill your sworn brother and your eldest brother?”
Upon hearing this, the veins on Lyu Xiaofeng’s neck looked ready to burst. He sneered back.
“Yes, after all these years, I still regret killing my eldest brother back then.”
“I should have turned him into a human swine and kept him alive, then fed you his liver every day. That would have kept you quiet.”
“Lyu! Xiao! Feng!”
The Old Master stared at Lyu Xiaofeng with eyes wide with fury. Their expressions weren't like father and son at all, but like mortal enemies.
“You killed your eldest brother! You killed your third brother!”
“Are you going to kill your old man now too?”
The other people in the conference room were unnervingly silent, acting like dolls that couldn't hear a thing.
“Of course not. Didn't I get you that natural transcendent liver just so you could live a long life?”
“I want you to watch closely and see how much stronger the Lyu family is in my hands compared to your eldest son’s!”
“Jin Duo!”
The gold-masked man stood up and cupped his fists.
“Present!”
“Prepare yourself. You’re coming out with me tomorrow.”
“Yes, sir!”
Lyu Xiaofeng then looked at Captain Zhou.
“Captain Zhou.”
“Master!”
Captain Zhou wasn't qualified to sit; he had been standing guard at the door. He turned around only when he heard Lyu Xiaofeng’s voice.
“I’ll leave the perimeter security and the compensation for the guards to you.”
“Rest assured, Master!”
Captain Zhou also cupped his fists. Lyu Xiaofeng then looked at the Butler—the old man who had stopped the blade-wielding ghost that night.
“Uncle Xu, while I am away, I’m leaving the household in your hands.”
“Rest assured, Master.”
Lyu Xiaofeng nodded and glanced at his father, who was still fuming.
“Father, calm down. After all, I didn't kill Old Fourth and Old Fifth, did I?”
The Old Master trembled all over upon hearing those words.
...
“I can give you sufficient spirituality to let you escape your current state.”
“What do you say?”
Yin Yang was still conversing with the oil painting through the brand.
Spatial-type items that were currently active could not be directly placed into the book box. Otherwise, Yin Yang would have simply had the lantern-carrying ghost take the oil painting away right then and there.
This was the difference between a transcendent item and a Hidden Vault.
A Hidden Vault was only 'open' when the key was used to unlock the door; usually, it was just an ordinary key that anyone could carry away with ease.
This oil painting, however, while it could contain sealed objects, was a transcendent item that was always 'open.'
Attempting to move it was equivalent to moving a portion of space.
To put it simply, a Hidden Vault was a mobile treasury—you just needed the key to open it.
The oil painting was like a safe built into a wall; moving it was almost impossible.
However, if you knew the password, you could open it. Even if you didn't know the password, it didn't matter—other methods might work, such as the 'bribery' Yin Yang was currently attempting.
“Once a transcendent item’s spirituality vanishes, it will be discarded or even recycled.”
“When you are remade in the furnace, will you still be you?”
“But I can help you return to your peak state.”
