Chapter 4 · Volume 1

What Are You Barking For?

Inside the dilapidated thatched cottage.
Bai Zhirou huddled in the corner of the bed, her knees pulled to her chest. She still hadn't recovered from what had just happened, murmuring in a low voice:
“What on earth happened to me?”
She talked to herself for quite a while and even called out to the devil in her mind several times, but there was absolutely no response, as if all of it had been nothing but her own hallucination.
“Is there really something wrong with my mind? Have I developed a split personality?”
“Yeah, pretty much.”
“So... wait, you're still here?!”
Jiang Ye had finally accepted the fact that he had become a resident old grandpa, only to be stabbed in the back again by this girl. He really wanted to complain, “Hey, those are my lines!”
Seeing that he didn't reply, Bai Zhirou quickly asked:
“Senior... you mentioned earlier that you're some kind of ‘Fourth Calamity,’ and that you wanted to ‘seize my body’... Are you... are you perhaps a legendary Fiend from Beyond?”
Any normal person hearing this would have felt compelled to explain a thing or two.
But Jiang Ye refused.
After all, where was the fun in that?
“Seize your body? Heh.”
Jiang Ye immediately switched to boasting mode, dropping a bombshell right off the bat:
“Little girl, you're thinking too small. I am a Traveler.”
“A Traveler?” Bai Zhirou blinked in confusion.
“Indeed. I have traversed countless grand worlds. I once soloed the Lich King of Azeroth, swept through the Burning Hells of Sanctuary, and even slaughtered gods and demons on a continent called Teyvat!”
Jiang Ye started spouting complete nonsense. After all, when one was away from home, one's identity was entirely self-proclaimed.
Bai Zhirou listened in a complete daze. Although she couldn't understand those bizarre names, they sounded incredibly impressive.
“Then... then how did you end up like this?”
“Well... I encountered an extremely wicked person in this world. In a moment of carelessness, my physical body was destroyed. v me 50, and you can help me rise to the peak once more.”
“What is v50?”
“Oh, just a terrible meme. Anyway, for now, I can only borrow your body.”
Though Bai Zhirou was innocent and naive, she wasn't stupid. She said aggrievedly:
“Then... how long will you have to use it? Every time you take over, I... I feel so embarrassed...”
“Girl, think bigger.”
Jiang Ye interrupted her:
“I'm leveling your account for free without even charging you a power leveling fee. You're making a massive profit here. Besides, look at how efficient I am. It hasn't even been a day, and you're already at Qi Condensation Level 4.”
“I'll help you level up your account in the early stages. Once your strength increases, you can help me get an account of my own. Isn't this a perfect win-win situation?”
After several conversations, Bai Zhirou could now roughly understand what he meant by “account.” It was true—if he hadn't stepped in, she would have already been reduced to someone else's cultivation cauldron by now.
“But isn't absorbing other people's blood and qi to cultivate the way of an evil cultivator?”
“That's just a built-in game mechanic, alright? Forget it, just think of it as my unique ability.”
Faced with this devil living inside her head, Bai Zhirou had no options at all. She could only unilaterally accept this reality.
“Alright then. How should I address you? Traveler?”
“Oh, that's just one of my many nicknames. You can just call me Jiang Ye.”
“One last question. When you log onto my account—no, when you borrow my body—will there be any side effects? Like memory loss or something?”
Jiang Ye replied, “What do you mean by that?”
Bai Zhirou lay down on the bed with a weary body, and before long...
Zzz...
A moment later, her eyes slowly opened again, and she murmured in a low voice:
“As expected, only when her consciousness completely falls into a deep sleep and her soul is no longer suppressing me can I play continuously.”
Immediately after, he got out of bed on tiptoe, lit the kerosene lamp on the table, and began writing in a small notebook:
《Otherworld Survival Guide》...
The night passed.
The next morning, the atmosphere outside Luopo Village suddenly grew heavy.
“Boom!”
A violent surge of spiritual energy suddenly erupted at the dilapidated entrance of the village.
Two groups of people stood in stark confrontation on the open ground.
The uniform pink robes belonged to the Yin-Yang Sect disciples who had searched their way here.
On the other side, a group of green-clad figures were members of the Azure Mystic Sect who had rushed over after receiving Ye Ningning's message yesterday.
The atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.
Leading the Yin-Yang Sect was a sinister-looking young man whose cultivation had surprisingly reached mid stage Foundation Establishment.
Meanwhile, the one in charge of reception on the Azure Mystic Sect's side was an inner disciple who had just broken through to early stage Foundation Establishment.
“Sima Lie, what business do you have running wild on the territory of my Sword-Washing Pavilion?”
“So it is Fellow Daoist Chu Qianfeng. My cousin was killed nearby yesterday, and we followed the clues to this place. Since you seem so nervous, Fellow Daoist, could it be that you were the ones who killed him?”
Sima Lie spoke with a fake smile.
“Nonsense! We only arrived here today to receive the new disciples who passed the entrance trial. The timing doesn't align at all.”
Chu Qianfeng argued righteously.
Sima Lie sized up the flying boat they were riding, then looked at Bai Zhirou and Ye Ningning standing not far away. One was at Qi Condensation Level 4, and the other was at Qi Condensation Level 5.
They had actually been searching around this area since early morning. It wasn't until they saw the Azure Mystic Sect's people arriving grandly on their flying boat that they followed them to investigate, only to find that they were merely here to pick up two disciples. Thus, the previous scene unfolded.
Sima Lie's brow furrowed slightly. Two juniors in the Qi Condensation stage indeed couldn't have silently killed his cousin, who was at Qi Condensation Level 9, let alone destroyed the entire Yin-Yang Sect branch outpost.
Moreover, if they were to fight now, Chu Qianfeng was a sword cultivator, known for being stubborn and having high attack power.
If they truly clashed, even though Sima Lie was at mid stage Foundation Establishment, he wouldn't gain much of an advantage.
At this thought, the leader of the Yin-Yang Sect snorted. To save face, he said assertively:
“Since the timing doesn't align, let us search your bodies. If we don't find my cousin's belongings, we will naturally leave.”
Bai Zhirou was standing behind Ye Ningning, forcing herself to stay calm with her head lowered. Fortunately, Senior Sister Ye had reminded her yesterday to hide the spatial ring instead of wearing it openly on her hand.
She silently called out in her mind, “Lord Traveler? Are you there?”
Jiang Ye didn't respond, because as a night owl, he didn't have the habit of waking up early.
Chu Qianfeng's expression was grim, but with the odds against them, and wanting to bring the new disciples back safely, he ultimately grit his teeth. “Fine, but make it quick!”
Seeing this, everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
A few disciples of the Yin-Yang Sect scanned them half-heartedly to get it over with, before their gazes finally landed on Bai Zhirou.
They snickered on the side, their eyes sweeping obscenely over Bai Zhirou's shapely figure, spitting out filthy trash talk:
“Tsk tsk, the women of the orthodox sects are indeed fair and tender.”
“Once we return to the sect, Senior Brother will show you a good time, hahahaha!”
The vulgar language echoed across the open ground.
Bai Zhirou trembled with shame and anger, but she could only clench her fists tightly.
Ye Ningning wanted to say something in anger, but Chu Qianfeng grabbed her arm and shook his head gently at her.
The disciples of the Yin-Yang Sect whistled, laughing loudly at the members of the Azure Mystic Sect who looked like frightened quails.
Right at this moment, a crisp but slightly impatient voice rang out:
“What the hell are you barking for?”
Jiang Ye logged on.
