Chapter 172 · Volume 1

Shocked Assessors—Sis, What Exactly Do You Do for a Living?

Another period of time passed.
The sun over the North District slowly shifted half an inch overhead, and the atmosphere in the camp's monitoring room began to change.
The leaderboard on the large screen remained completely bare, with everyone's points sitting at zero.
Nothing but zeros.
It had been three hours.
Wasn't the North District supposed to be crawling with aberrations?
The accompanying representatives from several academies whispered among themselves, filling the monitoring room with a low, rustling hum of conversation.
“Wait, why isn't there any movement at all? Is the North District supposed to be like this?”
“Logically speaking, even on the outskirts of the restricted zone, a few scattered aberrations should have popped up by now.”
“Could it be that because this is the students' first time facing aberrations, they're being overly cautious?”
“That doesn't make sense either. Do those kids from Qingping Academy look like the cautious type to you...?”
They went back and forth, unable to reach a clear conclusion.
After all, the North District was rarely open, and this was the first time Dawn City had sent students here for trials.
Tian Guannan sat in his chair, motionless, but his brow was tightly furrowed.
He knew a few things about this Graduation Show...
It was absolutely impossible for no one to have killed an aberration for this long. Unable to hold back any longer, he turned directly to the people from Turing City and asked:
“Could there be an issue with the equipment?”
“Impossible.”
The suggestion was shot down the moment it left his mouth.
The speaker was the lead engineer from Turing City, the serious-looking man who had previously carried himself with quiet confidence before Liu Yun.
“Turing City's equipment does not fail. These devices just arrived this morning. I've reviewed all the data streams, and everything is perfectly normal...”
As he spoke, he tapped away at the console in front of him.
From the other side, Liu Yun spoke up politely:
“Could you double-check? Our students couldn't possibly have done absolutely nothing for three hours.”
“Looking at their feeds, they've been constantly on the move.”
Hearing Liu Yun's words, though annoyed at being questioned, the engineer still replied:
“Fine, let me check the backend data first.”
He swiped his fingers across the screen twice, bringing up a backend list containing a string of names and their corresponding profiles.
A young technician scanned the list, then froze.
Was there really a problem?
“Uh...” He began to hesitate.
Another technician nearby leaned over to look and was also stunned.
“What is it?” The lead engineer frowned.
The young technician pointed to a name on the screen and asked:
“Who is this lady exactly?”
Everyone was taken aback.
Amidst the sea of zeros, there was a score that had already reached several thousand. It was incredibly jarring, and the number was still rapidly climbing even now.
Had the equipment actually malfunctioned?
The various assessors of Dawn City quickly crowded around to look, and then fell into a collective silence.
The owner of that real-time score on the screen was none other than Bai Feifei!
The reason her data wasn't displayed on the main board was that she was an instructor.
However, since all devices of the same type shared the same functional modules, her smartwatch also had a recording function, and it was currently ticking up at a frenetic pace.
The technicians stared in utter disbelief, their voices turning stiff:
“W-What... what does this lady do for a living?”
Liu Yun finally opened her eyes, looking as if she had been waiting for this exact moment all along, with a look of “as expected” written all over her face.
The source of the anomaly was Bai Feifei, so why wasn't she surprised at all?
Tian Guannan's mouth twitched. “Don't just look at the numbers. Can we get a visual?”
Without wasting words, the young technician typed a quick string of commands on the keyboard.
A new window popped up on the large screen, displaying Bai Feifei's real-time perspective.
Then, everyone saw a slender black figure hurtling forward like a high-speed train.
Rewinding the footage slightly, they could see her combat state as she slaughtered aberrations.
She held a dripping longsword in her hand, with several aberrant corpses sprawled at her feet. Despite her slender frame, her movements were heavy and powerful, swinging and hacking with brutal force.
After finishing them off, she didn't rest for even a second. She tilted her head slightly, glanced in a certain direction out of the corner of her eye, and dashed off again.
She resumed her high-speed sprint, the surrounding scenery flashing past in a blur on the screen.
Upon finding aberrations, another round of hacking and slashing ensued.
And then on to the next.
The monitoring room fell silent.
The technician expanded Bai Feifei's small perspective window to fill the entire large screen and zoomed in.
Everyone crowded closer.
They watched her rampage across the North District wasteland. Wherever her longsword passed, aberrations collapsed one after another.
Everyone's mouths slowly fell open.
Silence reigned in the monitoring room for a full five minutes as they watched her sweep across the map.
It took a long while before a young technician finally spoke up in a trembling voice:
“Holy crap, she's too fierce...”
No matter who it was, seeing Bai Feifei's clean and efficient slaughter made them admire her incredible skill.
But after recovering from the shock of her strength, a sudden, collective thought flashed through everyone's minds.
During those past three hours of silence, the students had explored for hours and found absolutely nothing, unable to spot even a single trace of an aberration in the restricted zone...
Could it be that this girl had killed every single one of them along the way?
Was she really that fast? Not leaving even a single one for the students?
“Wait... this!” Tian Guannan's face flushed deep red, like a ripe fruit. “Is there something wrong with her head?!”
He felt incredibly frustrated; he wanted to curse at everything this woman did.
But right now, he felt completely powerless. He was at his wit's end and didn't even know what to curse about.
Seriously, what was her goal?
Was she just addicted to killing? How could a woman have such severe violent tendencies?
An instructor from another academy also couldn't hold back anymore and spoke up:
“Is this even reasonable? What is she doing? Shouldn't we find a way to warn her?”
“This is a bit of a dereliction of duty. As the overall safety director, she should be focusing on the students' safety, not...”
Midway through, he trailed off.
By taking charge of safety and killing all the aberrations, she had naturally ensured the students wouldn't be in any danger.
But was that really how they were supposed to interpret this?!
Talk about being overly “protective” of the students.
Did no one explain the rules clearly to this lunatic before she came...?
Liu Yun didn't say anything, only burying her face in her hands.
She recalled hearing from Wan Qianhong before that Bai Feifei seemed to have a form of OCD—she had to kill the aberrations herself, otherwise she felt like others killing them was wasting something.
At the time, she had thought that was an exaggeration. But looking at it now... Wan Qianhong's evaluation of her was always spot on!
Meanwhile, in an unnoticed corner, a Scavenger watching Bai Feifei's feed had a slightly grim expression.
He glanced around, and after confirming that no one was paying attention to him, he discreetly slipped a phone out behind his back.
Keeping the phone behind his back to hide the faint glow of the screen, he began typing something...
