Chapter 75 · Volume 1

The Normal Standard of the Extraordinary World

After the first transaction was completed, War Freya noticed that the speaking order here went clockwise. This meant she was placed dead last.
However, this was actually quite good. It gave War Freya a chance to understand how the gathering worked. After all, if she had been forced to speak first, who knew what kind of mess she might have made?
As the others took turns speaking, War Freya realized that the requests they made and the items they sold were all... incredibly low-level.
For instance, someone was selling an extraordinary item that looked like a glove, but its only effect was to slightly increase the user's physical strength.
Another person was selling a potion that could mildly heal wounds, and some pills that temporarily enhanced sight and hearing.
To a complete novice who had just stepped into the extraordinary world, these might seem like decent items. But to the current Freya, they were utterly useless.
A glove that slightly increased strength? Life Freya could perform a direct lifeform modification, granting anyone the physical fitness of a Rank Four Warrior. Wasn't that infinitely better than some glove? As for the potion, it was even less worth mentioning. As long as someone didn't drop dead on the spot, Life Freya could save them even if they were missing a heart.
By the time the circle was nearly complete, War Freya realized that the most valuable transaction here was actually the very first one—the request to kill a Rank Two extraordinary.
Then again, perhaps this was the normal standard of the extraordinary world. Most people were only Rank One or Rank Two, and advancing even once was extremely difficult. After all, one had to find a way to digest their potion without even knowing for sure if it had been fully digested. Even if they did, they still had to find a way to get the potion for the next rank. And even if they found someone selling it, they still had to scrape together enough money to buy it.
Not to mention, the authorities cracked down heavily on rogue extraordinaries. Surviving in such an environment was truly difficult. It might honestly be easier to just find a regular job and live a peaceful, ordinary life.
Of course, this was a world with extraordinary powers. If one chose to live a normal life, they would be completely helpless when disaster inevitably struck. That, too, was a form of true despair.
Once almost everyone had finished speaking, it was finally War Freya and Euphy's turn. Euphy spoke first, saying, “I want to sell a scroll. If you tear it, you will immediately obtain the ability of 【Micro-Expression Observation】, allowing you to judge whether someone is lying by observing their micro-expressions.”
Although Euphy had only come along to accompany War Freya, she obviously couldn't just say she was a tagalong who had nothing to buy or sell. So, she had crafted this item before they set out.
Euphy had previously developed an occult array that could inherit memories. In theory, this could be used on others. Thus, Euphy had compiled all her knowledge regarding 【Micro-Expression Observation】 and packaged it into this scroll.
As long as someone used it, they would receive this knowledge and these memories, allowing them to quickly master the skill.
When Freya first learned of this, her immediate reaction was to wonder if Euphy could package all of her knowledge and instantly impart it to anyone.
However, Euphy had quickly dashed those hopes. The Doctor's skill to 【Learn Extraordinary Abilities】 was itself an extraordinary ability. This meant that even if Euphy learned other extraordinary abilities, she could not pass them on to others in this manner.
The only exception was if the recipient was also a Rank Four Doctor.
Therefore, this method of packaging knowledge was currently limited to imparting mundane skills and knowledge of occult arrays, making it somewhat niche.
After all, with skills like 【Micro-Expression Observation】, Mind Freya could just read minds directly. Why would she bother observing micro-expressions? As for occult array knowledge, they could just leave that to Euphy.
But to the people at this gathering, a scroll that could instantly grant a skill upon use was incredibly wondrous. Someone immediately asked, “How much?”
Euphy thought for a moment and offered a price. “Thirty thousand?”
Since this item cost her virtually nothing to make and she hadn't come to make money anyway, she just threw out a random number.
Immediately after, someone shouted, “Deal!”
With that transaction complete, it was finally War Freya's turn. She said, “I want a Rank One Law Pathway potion. Of course, if anyone can get Rank Two or Rank Three, I can buy those as well.”
The moment she spoke, War Freya noticed quite a few people looking toward the man who had posted the first request—the protruding-tongue masked man. The man spoke up, saying, “I should be able to get you a Rank One, but it will take some time. I can bring it to the next gathering.”
As for Rank Two and Rank Three? He filtered them out entirely, acting as if he hadn't even heard her.
War Freya asked, “How much?”
The protruding-tongue masked man replied, “Fifty thousand.”
War Freya said, “Huh? That expensive? The request you just posted to kill a Rank Two started at only a hundred thousand?”
The protruding-tongue masked man said, “How is that the same? While a Rank One potion is indeed cheap, human lives are even cheaper in comparison.”
It was a simple truth. A potion was at its most valuable before it was consumed. Once it was drunk and entered someone's stomach, its value depreciated drastically.
War Freya said, “That... Fair enough.”
It looked like she would have to borrow another sum of money from Brother Scar later.
Once everyone had presented their requests, the organizer looked around and said, “Is there anything else anyone wants to address? If not, we can disperse in batches.”
None of the attendees spoke. The organizer then looked at War Freya and Euphy, saying, “We'll leave in five-minute intervals. You two go first.”
He had likely realized she was a first-time attendee, so he seemed to be showing her some consideration, both by putting her last in the speaking order and letting her leave first.
Even though... given the strength of the extraordinaries at this gathering, if War Freya were to suddenly turn hostile, she could probably take them all on by herself.
Still, War Freya appreciated the gesture. She gave him a slight nod, and then she and Euphy retraced their steps and left.
Along the way, Euphy said, “The next gathering is in ten days. We just have to wait a bit. But the next question is how we're going to get the subsequent potions for the Law Pathway.”
For anyone else, they would have to digest their potion first and wouldn't even be considering this problem. But knowing Fufu as well as she did, Euphy knew the girl would probably digest it the instant it touched her tongue.
