Chapter 53 · Volume 1

Carrying a Blade on a Rainy Night without an Umbrella

Am I really a bad, bad little fox?
Hearing the newcomer's voice clearly, Bai Xiaodu couldn't help but frown.
The man's wailing and shouting weren't acts; he was genuinely terrified of being killed.
With a thought, he retracted the electrical arcs.
Seeing the threat of death above his head vanish, the man slumped to the ground, letting out a massive sigh of relief.
Panting heavily, he quickly explained, “Mr. Bai, Boss Katemor said the person you're looking for has been found. That vampire is hiding in a small villa in the north of the city. The boss is currently lying in wait nearby with the boys, just waiting for you. My name is Leo, and I drove here. Would you like to head over with me?”
Crossing his arms, Bai Xiaodu swept a skeptical gaze up and down the man.
The Jackal Gang's efficiency was surprisingly high.
It was already late at night, meaning only a few hours had passed, yet they had already located the exact spot.
He then spoke slowly, “I only asked your boss to find that person. He sure is generous, going out of his way to send the Jackal Gang to help me catch him.”
Hearing the underlying meaning, Leo frantically waved his hands. “Mr. Bai, we absolutely have no intention of harming you! The boss made your identity very clear to us. If we knew all that and still tried to set you up, wouldn't we be completely out of our minds? What faction on Blue Star would dare to casually provoke a vampire? And what underworld force is larger than the Federal Explorers Association? Don't just look at us as a gang; gangs can't rely solely on fists to survive. The underworld isn't just about fighting and killing; it's about worldly wisdom and relationships!”
After hearing this, Bai Xiaodu's lips twitched.
Using a powerful name as a shield was indeed highly effective.
When he first showed off his strength, the Jackal Gang members were still defiant, clamoring to fight him.
But once he announced which dock he belonged to and who he was backing, they instantly fell in line.
Not bad. It saved him a lot of trouble.
Under Leo's expectant and somewhat humble gaze, Bai Xiaodu finally nodded. “Fine. Drive.”
“You got it, Brother Du!”
Leo quickly replied and ran off to bring the car over.
Bai Xiaodu followed unhurriedly behind him. The light rain blew against his face, cool and very refreshing.
Holding only the remnant broken sword in his arms, he squinted at the dim sky.
A dark, windy night with pouring rain—truly the perfect time for a killing.
With a cold expression, he exuded the aura of an otherworldly master.
Leo looked over, and Bai Xiaodu's appearance startled him. Recalling the other party's astonishing battle record during the bloody clash at Qingjuwan Estate, a sense of deep respect naturally welled up in his eyes.
However, what he didn't realize was that Bai Xiaodu was currently pondering a very serious question.
Damn it, he had forgotten to bring an umbrella and a raincoat.
If they ended up fighting and that vampire ran out, Bai Xiaodu knew his soft, dense fur would definitely get wet and heavy.
In the end, he would have to spend ages picking out grass seeds and small pebbles stuck to the tip of his tail.
If he ran back to get one now, he would have to get drenched all over again. And this guy named Leo didn't even have the sense to take off his own raincoat to cover him.
What an oblivious fellow!
Leo quickly drove the car over.
The rear passenger door popped open. “Brother Du, after you.”
Being suddenly called by that name made Bai Xiaodu, standing in the rain, feel a bit unaccustomed.
After all, he was used to calling his clients “big brother” or “big sister” during his gaming companion gigs.
Sliding into the car, he didn't say a word. He just silently pulled his tail into his lap and began squeezing the water droplets off it.
The scenery outside the window quickly began to move. Having played games for half the night, Bai Xiaodu closed his eyes to rest.
Leo drove obediently, his peripheral vision catching the remnant sword in Bai Xiaodu's arms through the rearview mirror.
It looked ancient and battered, but Leo nodded silently in his heart. The more it looks like this, the more it proves to be a master's weapon!
Thinking of this, a smile couldn't help but play on the corner of Leo's mouth as he drove.
When he had first received Boss Katemor's orders, he had been scared out of his wits.
The little skills he had learned when he first joined the gang had long since dissipated in a blur of partying and drinking. Now, he didn't know crap and could only brag while standing on beer crates.
Yet, the boss told them to gear up and gather to kill a Rank 0.6 Ranger Apprentice!
He was doing perfectly fine just collecting protection money; wasn't this just looking for trouble?
First of all, his boss fighting with others was just wrong!
Leo felt incredibly bitter. He had gestured at his own leg with a beer bottle for a long time, but in the end, he couldn't bring himself to do it. He was afraid of pain.
Racking his brains, Leo had even prepared to spend a fortune to get another gang brother to take his place.
But then the boss said there was backup—the ruthless character who had single-handedly wiped out the entire West Sector.
Leo couldn't help but steal another glance at Bai Xiaodu in the rearview mirror.
He still had his eyes closed, seemingly asleep. Wait, is that a bubble about to pop from his nose...
No!
He must be conserving his energy for the upcoming battle!
Unhurried and perfectly calm before a battle. The more he acted like this, the more he showed the style of a true master!
Like a heavy boulder settling firmly on the ground, Leo felt completely at ease.
At first, he had been so worried that he tossed and turned hundreds of times in bed, terrified that he would be sent to the front lines. The boss should have told him earlier that Brother Du was coming to help.
It was in the bag! Everything was completely secured!
In just a short dozen minutes, the car arrived at the designated location and the engine was shut off.
Leo rushed out, eagerly opening the door, and performed a flawless ninety-degree bow to Bai Xiaodu, who was waking up groggily inside. “After you!”
“Oh, right.”
Covering his mouth with his right hand, Bai Xiaodu yawned as he stepped out of the car.
His left hand casually grabbed Leo's raincoat and, under Leo's dumbfounded gaze, snatched it right off him and threw it over his own shoulders!
The movement was incredibly smooth. With an entirely casual expression, Bai Xiaodu buttoned up the collar as if the raincoat was just something he had picked up off the street.
“...”
Leo's brain short-circuited for a few seconds, but he quickly rationalized it.
Just like when he instantly killed Brother Yong at Starry Heaven last time. Brother Du must be doing this to prevent blood from splattering onto his clothes during the fight!
As expected of the most beautiful silver fox-kin among the canine demihumans. So elegant, Brother Du. The more he does this, the more he exudes the aura of a master!
Not far away, Katemor, who had been waiting for a while, naturally noticed the two of them.
Although he wondered why his underling was following behind Bai Xiaodu like a sycophantic lapdog, he quickly shook his head and ignored the minor detail.
Standing in front of a small shack, Katemor waved his hand, signaling Bai Xiaodu to come inside and talk.
Slowly pulling down his hood with one hand, Bai Xiaodu ignored the Jackal Gang members bowing in unison on both sides of him. He strode through the door and, without standing on ceremony, immediately took the best leather sofa in the room.
His wine-red eyes carried little emotion as he swept them across the room, causing the surrounding gang members to lower their heads in fear.
Everyone knew this was a ruthless killer who wouldn't blink an eye at taking a life. He might just raise a gun and shoot you mid-sentence.
Seeing his underlings cowering so pathetically, Katemor had no choice but to pull up a random stool. Under Bai Xiaodu's scrutinizing gaze, he braced himself and began to report.
“...I asked around with quite a few friends in the underworld, and an agent from a rental company provided a lead. About half a month ago, he suddenly rented this secluded little villa. My men staked out the place for a few hours and saw him active in the villa's yard with their own eyes. Once we confirmed it, I had all the surrounding roads guarded. We've accounted for everyone in every vehicle coming and going, so he is definitely still hiding inside the house.”
Bai Xiaodu nodded, acknowledging the information.
Then, instead of immediately getting up to head to the villa, he crossed his legs, leaned back, and settled comfortably into the sofa.
“The intelligence gathering is quite good, but... I'd like to ask, why did you bring so many people?”
Katemor immediately replied, “We have absolutely no ulterior motives!”
“Mr. Bai, I called over every single underling I could gather. First, it's to monitor the villa, and second, it's to assist you in order to make up for our previous offense.”
Bai Xiaodu raised an eyebrow. “You're quite interesting.”
Seeing that his tone had softened, Katemor immediately became enthusiastic. “Mr. Bai, myself and two or three of my most trusted brothers are ready to go with you at any moment to drag that vampire out. I will also order the others to guard the villa. If the worst happens and Jedoli tries to run, we'll be able to spot his escape route immediately!”
Perfectly logical and highly convincing. Katemor gave himself a huge mental pat on the back.
No one doubted Bai Xiaodu's strength; he had single-handedly wiped out the core members of the entire West Sector. Only a brainless idiot like Eryong, who was desperate to climb the ranks, would believe that was just a fluke.
By helping out and tagging along to share the credit, he could even score some merit.
Even if he didn't get any credit, surely Bai Xiaodu wouldn't kill him over that kid's matter given all the hard work he'd put in, right?
When the time came, a real man knew when to yield. He would just kneel down, kowtow, apologize to the kid, and pay a hundred thousand credits or so. Wouldn't that put the whole matter to rest?
The benefits were simply too great!
