Chapter 35 · Volume 1

Two Bloodlines, Evocation Control

“In the year 442 of the New Star Calendar, Adventurer Lynn has unlocked a new entry in the monster encyclopedia—Giant-Winged Bat Leader. Current unlocked entries: 8.”
“To receive the next Rune reward, 12 more entries must be unlocked.”
Flipping forward, a new page had opened up after the slime bloodline tree—
【Giant-Winged Bat】: A low-level monster that inhabits caves. When standing, its body can reach half the height of a human, with a wingspan of over two meters. Its bloodline ceiling is extremely low, and individuals that break through the species limit are rare.
The introduction on the left side was extremely brief. The short paragraph took up less space than the avatar, providing even less information than the goblin entry.
It seemed the monster encyclopedia had given full respect to goblins, the classic starter pack of another world.
As for the bloodline tree on the right side, it went without saying.
There were only two bloodlines in total: 'Giant-Winged Bat' and 'Giant-Winged Bat Leader.'
Lynn focused his mind on the 【Giant-Winged Bat】 avatar and spent one Bloodline Point to activate it directly.
The 【Giant-Winged Bat】 avatar lit up, the green venom on its fangs looking so realistic it seemed ready to splash out of the manual.
But after activating this bloodline, his body received almost no physical feedback.
Lynn only felt a slight itch in his throat.
Just as doubt began to rise, his Adam's apple bobbed involuntarily, and a silent sound wave rippled out from his throat.
A rough three-dimensional map of the surrounding terrain instantly formed in his mind.
This... He seemed to have inherited the bat's echolocation ability.
Even if he closed his eyes, he could still get a general sense of his surroundings.
He tapped on the Giant-Winged Bat avatar, and indeed—
【Giant-Winged Bat: Echolocation Lv.1 (Passive)】
Aside from this one Skill, the Giant-Winged Bat bloodline did not grant Lynn any stat increases.
Perhaps it was because Lynn's stats had already grown to a point where such a low-level monster could no longer provide any boost.
It made sense when he thought about it. Flight aside, the stats of a Giant-Winged Bat were actually about the same as a Goblin Minion's, and could not even compare to a Strong Goblin's.
Fortunately, there was still the next bloodline.
【Do you wish to activate the 'Giant-Winged Bat Leader' bloodline? This will consume Bloodline Point (Giant-Winged Bat) * 10. Current remaining Bloodline Points: 12】
Upon activation, a massive change instantly occurred within his body.
First, a burning sensation spread from his Adam's apple, followed immediately by his muscles trembling involuntarily throughout his entire body.
Finally, the 'seed' in his mind that served as his source of magic power seemed to slightly change in shape and color.
From its original white, cloud-like state, it was gradually dyed with a hint of sky blue.
Though he had not yet experienced the effects firsthand, Lynn was certain this was a massive upgrade!
He tapped the Giant-Winged Bat Leader's avatar to confirm his gains:
【Giant-Winged Bat Leader: Echolocation Lv.2 (Passive), Evocation Control Lv.1 (Passive), Agility +1 (under current stats)】
The passive Echolocation had upgraded once more.
This time, the sound waves sent back not a rough layout, but a highly detailed, high-definition model where every tiny detail was visible. It was like a nearsighted person suddenly recovering perfect vision.
Furthermore, the sound waves now had a degree of wall-penetration, allowing him to detect substances up to half a meter underground.
It was practically a human radar.
Wingen Town happened to have numerous mines to its west. Perhaps he could use this to search for new ore veins in the future.
The boost to his Agility went without saying. After it reached seven points, both Lynn's Strength and Agility far exceeded those of an ordinary adult male. In his past life, he would have easily been considered a minor superhuman.
The increase in stats was exponential.
With every point gained, his physical performance leaped significantly compared to before.
But the most important gain was undoubtedly the passive Skill, Evocation Control!
This ability granted Lynn much greater control over spells from the School of Evocation.
The School of Evocation was currently one of the major mainstream schools of magic. Its core philosophy was to use pure magic power to shape spell effects carried by energy forms such as elements and force fields.
Because it primarily focused on various destructive spells, mages of other schools jokingly referred to them as 'magical turrets.'
Mentor Gray had mentioned before that Lynn's Magic Missile was a classic First-Circle Evocation spell.
And the control granted by Evocation Control optimized his Evocation spells in every way, such as shorter chanting times, greater spell power, and lower magic power consumption...
And most crucially,
This passive allowed Lynn to continue using magic power to guide the direction of the magical missile even after it left his hand.
In other words, Lynn's Magic Missile now possessed a 'tracking' capability.
It wouldn't be an exaggeration to call the current Magic Missile a 'magic guided missile'!
As long as Lynn locked onto a target, any unranked monster would be instantly killed upon impact.
Even a Level 1 monster would suffer greatly if hit in a vital spot by a First-Circle spell.
After unlocking two bloodlines in a row, he had two Bloodline Points left.
But on the Giant-Winged Bat's bloodline tree, there were no other bloodlines left to unlock.
Just as Lynn was secretly lamenting that the remaining Bloodline Points would go to waste, he suddenly noticed a new message in the encyclopedia log:
“Adventurer has activated a complete bloodline tree for the first time. The Bloodline Point exchange function is now unlocked, allowing surplus Bloodline Points to be exchanged proportionally for other required Bloodline Points.”
Oh?
Lynn flipped back a few pages. Sure enough, a plus sign had appeared next to the 'held Bloodline Points' for both goblins and slimes.
He tried tapping it.
“Do you wish to exchange 2 Bloodline Points (Giant-Winged Bat) for 3 Bloodline Points (Goblin)?”
“Do you wish to exchange 2 Bloodline Points (Giant-Winged Bat) for 2 Bloodline Points (Slime)?”
The exchange rates were different, seemingly related to the monsters' Challenge Ratings.
Both Giant-Winged Bats and slimes were Challenge Rating 1/4 monsters, while goblins were Challenge Rating 1/8.
Lynn was currently quite envious of the 'Swift Escape' Skill from the Goblin Warrior bloodline, so he exchanged his Giant-Winged Bat Bloodline Points for goblin ones.
He now had 22 Goblin Bloodline Points, and only needed to save up 18 more to activate the 'Goblin Warrior' bloodline.
He was not far from 【Goblin Warrior】.
Alternatively, Lynn could choose to accumulate more Bloodline Points to directly activate the 【Goblin Priest】 bloodline, thereby enhancing his spellcasting abilities.
...
【Giant-Winged Bat Leader】: Due to racial limitations, it is a Challenge Rating 1/4 monster, just like its ordinary kin. Although it possesses a talent for spellcasting, its physical limitations prevent it from containing magic power. It can only rely on its pack to gather sound wave energy, using its magic power to guide the sound waves for attacks.
