Chapter 87 · Volume 1

Supernaturals of the New Era and Nobles of the Old (3)

On the other side, Liu Wen held two heads in his left hand.
One head belonged to Councilwoman Song Ling, and the other to Tao Fang. Both had their eyes wide open, wearing expressions of sheer disbelief.
He stood in the middle of an old-fashioned mansion courtyard, his expression calm as his six crimson eyes stared at the fat man kneeling before him.
Qiu Yueji, who was usually smiling no matter what he did and always projected an air of deep shrewdness, had completely lost his composure.
He kept slamming his head against the ground, screaming in sheer terror, “Please, spare me! I can be of use to you! I can mobilize the resources of the entire nation! I can have the government help you fight for the Lord of Evil's items!”
Bang! Bang! Bang!
He slammed his head hard against the ground, splitting the skin on his forehead as blood flowed freely.
Liu Wen looked down at him and said in a flat tone, “Why would I need a piece of trash like you? You are merely the chicken I am slaughtering to warn the monkeys. Once you are out of the way, the new rulers will naturally come to find me.”
The five great families represented the five major factions of the Nanming Kingdom. Once they died, the entire country would plunge into a chaotic struggle for power in the short term.
When that happened, let alone fighting for the Lord of Evil's items, they would be lucky if they could even keep the country running normally.
Hearing his words, despair washed over Qiu Yueji's face.
He suddenly leaped to his feet and roared, “Since you won't give me a way out, then I'll drag you down with me even if it kills me!”
With that, he charged at Liu Wen.
Liu Wen stood perfectly still. Behind him, the mansion's security guards, whom he had taken control of, suddenly stepped forward.
Four guards pinned Qiu Yueji down, while another guard, his eyes dull and lifeless, stepped forward holding an axe.
He raised the axe and chopped down at Qiu Yueji's left hand.
Slash!
“Ahhh!!!” His hand was severed, and Qiu Yueji let out a pig-like shriek.
Slash! Slash!
The axe kept swinging, and before long, Qiu Yueji was hacked into several pieces.
His head rolled to Liu Wen's feet.
Liu Wen casually tossed the two heads he was holding next to Qiu Yueji's remains.
From start to finish, his expression did not fluctuate in the slightest. “I suppose I have truly pulled back the curtain on the supernatural era. I wonder how history will record me in the future.”
Before he slaughtered his way into the Capital, these rulers were as arrogant as ever, looking down from their high pedestals, believing everything was under their control. They didn't even think of hiding.
Of course, hiding would have been useless anyway, as Liu Wen could easily locate them.
Liu Wen walked out. Outside, the ground was littered with the bodies of security guards.
He headed back in the direction he came. He still had to catch a flight tonight to make sure he arrived in Yangcheng by daytime.
Ten minutes later, outside Feng Chang's villa.
Wooo! Wooo! Wooo!
Over a dozen black sedans from the Security Bureau sped toward the scene.
Single red sirens flashing on their roofs cleared the way as they rushed forward.
The moment the vehicles pulled up to the gate, the doors flew open, and a young man wearing a bulletproof vest quickly got out. “Hurry! Move your asses! If anything happens to Councilman Feng, we're all finished!”
Just minutes ago, the channel responsible for regular check-ins with Feng Chang's security team went silent, and calls to their captain went unanswered.
The local branch of the Security Bureau immediately mobilized.
Slam! Slam! Slam!
The sound of doors slamming echoed continuously as a large number of heavily armed agents piled out of the vehicles.
Wooo! Wooo! Wooo!
Behind them, dozens of black tactical vans were speeding toward the location.
The young man leading the Security Bureau team swept his gaze across the villa's main entrance. Seeing the soldiers lying dead on the ground, his face darkened. “Initiate the emergency plan! Move in, fast!”
Dozens of agents behind him immediately charged toward the entrance, while others threw grappling hooks over the top of the walls, quickly climbing up the ropes to set up sniper positions.
Thud! Thud! Thud!
As the group rushed through the main gate, they were greeted by the sight of security guard corpses covering the ground.
“To the second floor! Two of you, go up through the broken window!” the young man shouted, looking at the shattered glass on the second floor as he led the charge.
Inside the first floor of the villa, the pungent stench of blood filled his nostrils.
Ignoring it, he rushed up to the second floor toward Feng Chang's bedroom.
Standing before him was a white metal door. It was a specially reinforced blast door that could withstand most explosives without leaving a mark.
Yet, something had sliced three vertical gashes, each over ten centimeters long, right through it.
“Councilman Feng, we're here to rescue you!” the young man yelled, pulling at the doorknob.
It was locked from the inside and wouldn't budge.
Click!
Just then, the door clicked open from the inside.
A pale-faced agent looked at the young man, his voice trembling. “Captain... we're... we're finished...”
Hearing this, the captain's face drained of color as he rushed into the bedroom.
The moment he stepped inside, the first thing he saw was the woman lying on the bed, her body sliced into several pieces.
By the window, the prominent figure who frequently appeared on television was lying face down on the floor.
Blood pooled from his head, and there was not a single sign of life in his body.
Stepping forward, the captain reached down and rolled the body over.
Feng Chang's face came into view, his forehead completely caved in and his features mangled beyond recognition.
“Ah!” the captain shrieked, collapsing onto the floor. He wasn't terrified of the corpse; he was terrified of what would happen to him next.
Imprisonment at best, execution at worst.
Wooo! Wooo! Wooo!
In the early hours of the morning, sirens echoed across the Capital. The military, rapid response units, the police, and the Security Bureau were all deployed.
The city of over twenty million people was placed under complete lockdown. Everyone, except official personnel, was ordered to stay indoors.
This sudden development instantly ignited online public opinion.
Qiandu Forum, the only unregulated platform for public discussion, was flooded with posts from the Capital.
Under the most popular thread about the Capital, a massive crowd of locals gathered to comment.
ElectricKid: “What on earth is going on? Did the Emperor stage a coup? Why are there so many soldiers entering the city?”
EarnMoneyForModels: “The sky is falling! I was just standing at my door taking a peek, and some soldier slapped me right across the face! Is there no law and order anymore? Where is the justice!”
TakeABite: “Grabbing popcorn. Any experts care to analyze this? Something huge definitely happened tonight. I've lived in the Capital for decades and I've never seen anything like this.”
LittleBean: “Do you think it has something to do with the supernatural? If the news from Ningcheng and Yangcheng is real, given how those supernatural beings act, it's not impossible that they came to the Capital to make a move.”
In a luxury villa district in the Capital.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The door to Zhu Weiliang's bedroom was being pounded violently.
“Dad, wake up! Something huge has happened!” his son's voice yelled from outside.
Veins popped on Zhu Weiliang's forehead as he snapped his bloodshot eyes open. “What are you screaming about in the middle of the night? Let a man sleep!”
“No, Dad, something really big happened! A parliamentary councilman's entire family was slaughtered! Our chance has come!” Outside, the young man was pacing anxiously.
Zhu Weiliang bolted upright and grabbed his phone from the nightstand.
He always kept his phone on silent while sleeping. When he turned the screen on, it showed over a hundred missed calls.
Just then, the phone rang again. The caller ID showed the Capital's garrison commander.
