On the road leading to the Church of the Earth Mother, a large number of inspectors had already been deployed along the roadside, sealing off the streets.
At one of the intersections, an inspector was shouting through a megaphone, “Road closed ahead! All vehicles, turn back immediately!”
In front of him, quite a few cars had stopped.
From the black sedan at the very front, the driver poked his head out and asked curiously, “What's going on ahead? Why is it blocked off all of a sudden?”
“Military exercise! Don't ask questions, just turn around!” the inspector barked at him.
Cowed by the shout, the driver pulled his head back and quickly turned his car around.
“Damn, do these people not understand plain words? We told them to turn around, and they're still asking questions,” one inspector grumbled with an annoyed look.
“Hey, what do you think you're doing? Turn that car around!” The inspector next to him wanted to say more, but stopped.
He saw a tanker truck speeding toward them. Instead of slowing down at his shout, it accelerated.
Seeing this, the inspector's face fell, and he quickly reached for the holster at his waist. “Stop the vehicle! Any further and we will open fire!”
Inside the tanker truck, a red-eyed Night Slave ignored them completely, slamming the accelerator to the floor.
“Open fire! There's something wrong with this truck!” Seeing no sign of the vehicle slowing down, the inspector roared and drew his pistol.
Around him, seven or eight other inspectors also quickly drew their weapons and aimed them at the vehicle.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
A dense volley of gunfire suddenly rang out. The inspector holding the megaphone began to tremble violently.
He looked down at the seven or eight bullet holes that had appeared on his body, despair washing over his face. “Help...”
Bang!
With another gunshot, his skull flew off.
“Hahaha!” A burst of maniacal laughter echoed.
Liu Qi, his eyes blood-red, was sneering with a pistol in hand.
Behind him, over a dozen fanatical cultists opened fire on the inspectors with their guns.
With no inspectors left to stop it, the tanker truck rolled into the middle of the intersection.
A hundred meters away, Wang Pingcheng frowned deeply as he watched the vehicle suddenly appear. “Why is that truck parked in the middle of the road? What the hell are those inspectors doing?!”
Sitting in the passenger seat was He Chong, the Tactical Inspector Captain.
Just as he was about to grab his walkie-talkie to assess the situation, he saw several more tanker trucks driving into the intersection.
As he noticed the hazard symbols on the tankers, his face slowly turned pale. “Those lunatics!”
The intersection was now blocked by four tanker trucks.
One was a fuel tanker, one was a toxic gas tanker, one was a chemical tanker, and the one at the very front bore no markings whatsoever.
“Wang Pingcheng! Get your ass out here!” a furious roar echoed from behind the tankers.
Dressed in white robes, Liu Qi stepped out from behind a tanker, a pistol gripped in his left hand.
Behind him, over a dozen red-robed cultists emerged. Their expressions were manic, and they were ready to sacrifice themselves for the Church of the Earth Mother at any moment.
With a grim expression, Wang Pingcheng stopped his car and got out.
Staring at the trucks behind Liu Qi, he gritted his teeth. “Has your Liu family decided to make an enemy of the authorities? I'm telling you, this is suicide!”
The convoy behind him came to a halt. Even though they had tanks, they didn't dare fire a single shot.
Hitting the fuel tanker would have been fine; at this distance, shielded inside the tanks, they would have been safe.
But if they hit the toxic gas or chemical tankers, even another meter of steel plating wouldn't save them.
The soldiers and inspectors behind him began to gather toward Wang Pingcheng's position, waiting only for his order to launch an assault.
Hearing his words, Liu Qi tilted his head slightly, his eyes ablaze with sheer madness. “Suicide? Try surviving first!”
The moment his voice fell, the unmarked tanker truck at the very front suddenly opened its valves.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
A massive volume of white gas billowed from the tanker's outlets. The gas quickly enveloped Liu Qi and his men, before rapidly spreading toward the convoy.
Seeing this, Wang Pingcheng's expression changed dramatically. “Put on your gas masks!”
All the soldiers and inspectors behind him hastily pulled out their gas masks and put them on.
The white mist quickly swallowed the convoy. Standing four to five meters tall, it reduced visibility to a mere two meters.
In front of the tankers, Liu Qi tossed his pistol aside and drew two three-sided trench spikes from his lower back.
Though the mist limited normal visibility to two meters, he could see five to six meters ahead with his enhanced vision.
“Everyone, the game has begun!” Liu Qi roared, a cruel sneer plastering his face.
Thud! Thud! Thud!
A flurry of rapid footsteps echoed from behind as dozens of glowing red eyes emerged from the white mist.
All the Night Slaves were armed with various melee weapons. As mindless creatures, wielding cold steel allowed them to leverage their physical superiority far better than firearms ever could.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
One by one, the Night Slaves surged past Liu Qi, sprinting toward the convoy.
Liu Qi kicked off the ground and dashed forward.
A hundred meters away, Wang Pingcheng wore his gas mask. The sound of the pouring rain muffled his senses, making it harder to perceive what was ahead.
“Prepare for combat! When you fire, aim downward as much as possible to avoid hitting the tankers!” He Chong warned loudly beside him.
He stared grimly into the white mist.
Thud! Thud! Thud!
Suddenly, when they were only seven or eight meters away, Wang Pingcheng heard a flurry of rapid footsteps.
“Fi—” He was about to shout the order when a red-eyed, middle-aged man wielding an axe suddenly burst through the mist just two meters away.
The man swung his axe down at Wang Pingcheng, whose pupils contracted. So fast!
He had barely heard the sound before the man was already upon him. In a reflex, he raised his gun.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The pistol bullets tore into the middle-aged man, but he showed no signs of pain.
He had no consciousness, which meant he felt no pain. As long as he wasn't dead, he wouldn't stop.
Beside him, He Chong wanted to help, but another Night Slave suddenly materialized right in front of him.
As the Night Slave closed in, it lunged forward, slamming into him.
“Ugh!” He Chong was knocked to the ground, and the Night Slave swung its hammer down with brutal force.
Crack!
With a dull crack, most of He Chong's skull caved in and ruptured. His eyes bulged as he died instantly.
Even though he was a Tactical Captain, he stood no chance against a Night Slave whose physical capabilities far surpassed theirs.
Thud! Thud! Thud!
A massive swarm of Night Slaves surged past them, charging toward the inspectors and soldiers behind.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Gunfire erupted instantly, but Wang Pingcheng could no longer spare any attention for his men.
The middle-aged Night Slave's axe was already coming down, forcing Wang Pingcheng to raise his pistol to block it.
Bang! Crack!
With a loud crack, the pistol was smashed to pieces, and a sharp snap echoed from his gun hand as his bones fractured.
Wang Pingcheng's face filled with shock. What terrifying strength!
Opposite him, the Night Slave raised its axe once more, preparing to bring it down.
Thwack!
Suddenly, a stray bullet flew in from behind, striking the Night Slave squarely in the head.
The creature stiffened, and its body instantly collapsed to the ground.
