Chapter 39 · Volume 1

Assassins

Seeing Tang Yongyun walk out, Buck quickly got out of the car and opened the rear door. “Boss, is it over already? Did Mr. Zhao give you anything good?”
“Don't ask questions you shouldn't ask. Someone has already sneaked right up to us, and you didn't even notice,” Tang Yongyun cast a cold glance at him.
Buck's expression changed instantly. Just as he was about to turn around to check—
Tang Yongyun spoke again, “Don't look. Just drive. I want to see what tricks they have up their sleeves.”
Bang!
With that, he slid into the back seat, leaving Buck with no choice but to obediently start the car.
Vroom!
The vehicle started up and drove forward.
Down the street, a gray van saw this and started its engine, tailing the sedan.
Inside the van sat four men and women with foreign faces.
“Boss, should we make our move? Tang actually came out without any bodyguards. How foolish,” a middle-aged blond man with a buzz cut said from the passenger seat.
In the back seat, a thirty-year-old white man with long hair was wiping down a sniper rifle.
Hearing his subordinate's words, Meg spoke up. “Do it. We've been here for two days already, and this city feels a bit off. There are too many soldiers and inspectors around.”
There were too many authorities on the streets, which had prevented them from striking immediately.
“Alright, let me handle it!” said a green-haired woman wearing glasses, who was sitting next to him.
She pulled a drone out of the backpack in front of her. Explosives were attached to its underside.
Reaching out, she rolled down the window and tossed the drone outside.
Whir!
The moment it was released, the drone automatically activated and surged rapidly toward the white sedan ahead.
“It'll be over in a flash. Watch closely,” the green-haired woman said with a confident look, holding the remote control in both hands.
The screen in the center of the remote displayed the drone's camera feed. Without professional anti-drone equipment, there was no way their target could survive.
“Caw!” Just as the drone came within three meters of the car, a crow suddenly materialized in front of it.
Boom!
The drone collided with the crow, exploding instantly in midair.
“Huh? Where did that bird come from?” Meg and the other three watched the explosion ahead in surprise.
Unseen by them, a dozen crows circled overhead, their eyes scanning everything on the street below.
Inside the white sedan, the explosion prompted Buck to slam on the brakes. He looked back at Tang Yongyun. “Boss!”
Tang Yongyun's eyes were half-closed, his expression icy. “Go. The assassins this time are all in the van behind us.”
“Understood!” Buck pushed open the door and stepped out. He looked at the van dozens of meters behind him, a cruel smile spreading across his face.
In the van, Meg sneered as he watched Buck get out of the car. “No gun? Floor the gas! Run him over!”
“You got it!” The driver was a Black man. His thick lips curled up in a maniacal grin.
Roar!
He slammed his foot on the accelerator, and the van surged toward Buck at top speed.
Seeing this, Buck took off his sunglasses and gloves, revealing pitch-black claws. Black veins bulged on his face. “Not shooting? It seems you've underestimated me, Buck!!!”
He leaned his body forward. Just as the van closed to within five meters—
Crack!
Faint cracks spread across the ground beneath his feet. With his arms crossed in front of him, he charged head-on toward the oncoming van.
In the van, the Black driver was stunned by his actions. “This lunatic! What is he trying to do?!”
The others wore similar expressions, but they weren't particularly worried.
Crash!
The instant the front of the van collided with Buck's crossed arms, the front of the vehicle—which had accelerated to 150 kilometers per hour—began to crumple at a visible rate.
Shatter!
The windshield shattered as the van came to a grinding halt. The sheer momentum lifted the rear of the vehicle into the air, while the front end compressed inward.
Before the two assassins sitting in the front could even react, their internal organs were crushed by the collapsing front end. Their eyes rolled back, and they died on the spot.
Thud!
The rear of the van crashed heavily back onto the ground. On the concrete where Buck stood, a meter-long scrape mark had formed.
His hands trembled. His forearms were bent inward, and broken bones protruded through his skin, yet he had stopped the van dead in its tracks.
A manic grin stretched across his face. “Underestimating me comes with a price!”
Snap!
He violently shook his broken arms. With a sickening pop, the fractured bones snapped back into alignment, and the puncture wounds healed at a visible rate.
Bam!
He strode toward the rear door and ripped it off with a single hand.
A sniper rifle pointed directly at him. Coughing up blood, Meg wore a hideous expression. “Die, you monster!”
Bang!
The gun fired. Buck's neck twisted at a bizarre angle to the left, dodging the bullet, and he lunged inside.
Splat!
His right hand plunged into the head of the green-haired woman as she tried to draw her weapon, while his left hand slashed across Meg's throat, cleanly executing them both.
A head rolled to the floor. Looking at the four dead assassins, Buck sneered with disdain. “Useless trash. And you call yourselves assassins.”
Squish!
He pulled his hand out of the green-haired woman's head, turned around, and walked back toward his sedan.
“Boss, they've all been taken care of,” Buck said, leaning down toward the back seat window.
The rear window rolled down, and Tang Yongyun looked at him. “Let's go. We've stayed here long enough. It's time to head back and settle some scores.”
Originally, he had planned to return after some time. After all, with Zhao Jin stirring things up, he wanted to stay close to see if there were any benefits to be gained.
But now that assassins had come, and more importantly, with the promotional task Zhao Jin had given him, he had to take full control of the Syndicate if he wanted to execute it properly.
Hearing his boss's words, Buck grew excited. “Are we heading back? I can't wait!”
In Ningcheng, there were too many unknown monsters, and he hadn't been able to unleash his full strength at all.
But once they were outside, those ordinary humans would be completely at his mercy.
Tang Yongyun pulled out his phone and drafted a message.
A few seconds later, he sent a text to Jiang Nan.
“Spread the news that I'm returning to the Syndicate to sell my shares. I want to gather all those old geezers together.”
“Understood!” Jiang Nan replied quickly.
Staring at the message, Tang Yongyun's eyes turned cold.
Back then, those old geezers had forced him to flee to the Nanming Kingdom. Now, it was his turn to strike.
