Chapter 31 · Volume 1

Dawn Empire (31)

Lucifer beat Leviathan up, sending him scurrying away with his hands over his head.
The Demon King of Lust, Asmodeus, burst into laughter, her voice as crisp as silver bells.
Her figure was enchanting and graceful, clad in a dress made of premium black silk that clung tightly to her body, outlining her perfect curves.
Asmodeus said, “No matter why the God of Light suddenly intervened in the affairs of the human world, as long as we kill that Divine Envoy, his schemes will not succeed.”
The Demon King of Wrath, Samael, was covered in blazing flames as he roared, “I'll go kill him right now.”
“That is a human I have my eyes on, and I've already branded him with the mark of Hell,” Lucifer's voice carried an inexplicable hint of danger. “You want to kill him? Have you asked for my opinion?”
Asmodeus's lips curled up slightly, her lips as red as fresh blood. “Lucifer, you are actually interested in a human?”
Lucifer said coldly, “Anyone the God of Light is interested in, I am interested in.”
“Since this is a battle between you and that one, we won't interfere.” Asmodeus shrugged. “Samael, let's go.”
Leviathan also slunk away in defeat.
Only the Demon King of Greed, Mammon, remained.
Lucifer raised his eyelids and asked, “Is there anything else?”
Mammon said with a smile, “I'm just curious. Who on earth could interest both you and the God of Light at the same time?”
Lucifer narrowed his eyes, a sudden chill emanating from them. “If you're so curious, why don't you go see for yourself?”
Mammon stared at him for a moment, then pursed his lips. “All of Hell's financial power is in my hands. If I really run off to the human world, you'd be worked to death.”
“Besides, what if you empty my Palace of Ten Thousand Golds after I leave? I can't bear to leave my hall full of gold and silver treasures!”
Lucifer snorted in disdain.
Mammon also left Purgatory Palace, though his expression was thoughtful.
Ever since Satan disappeared, Lucifer had become the new Lord of Hell, and he had never left Hell before.
Although Lucifer despised the God of Light, he wouldn't go as far as leaving Hell twice just for a Divine Envoy chosen by him.
Unless that Divine Envoy's identity was not simple.
This Demon King of Pride had never held anyone in high regard, with the sole exception of...
A manic smile spread across Mammon's face. He felt like he had already guessed the truth.
Whether it is or not, won't I know once I go look?

Mage Association.
Ning Busan asked, “Teacher, I would like to ask you a question.”
Saige teased, “The Lord Divine Envoy still needs to ask me for advice?”
Ning Busan said, “Whether I am a great figure or a small one, I am still your student, Teacher.”
Saige felt a warmth in his heart. “What do you want to ask?”
Ning Busan said, “I've been studying divination magic lately, and I discovered a strange phenomenon.”
Saying that, he pulled a silver coin from his pocket.
“Will I get sick today?”
After asking the question, Ning Busan tossed the silver coin high into the air. The silver coin spun a few times in the air and then fell slowly.
It did not land heads or tails up; instead, it miraculously stood on its edge, stopping steadily on the tabletop.
Ning Busan said, “I've tried various methods of divination. As long as the question is related to myself, the divination never succeeds, not even with a simple yes-or-no query like this.”
“Let me try.” Saige picked up the silver coin and asked, “Will Ning Busan get sick?”
He tossed the coin, but the result was the same—the silver coin still stood on its edge.
Ning Busan asked, “Teacher, why does this happen?”
Saige pondered for a moment before saying, “There are three possibilities.”
“The first possibility is a barrier of rules. For example, if we use divination magic to divine matters concerning gods, it will certainly fail because their fate is determined by higher laws.”
“The second possibility is fate isolation. Some existences are not bound by ordinary fate; their destinies are blank and do not belong to any causal chain, so divination cannot take effect.”
“However, you belong to the third category. A powerful being has sealed your path of destiny. Unless the person performing the divination is more powerful than the one who sealed it, no divination will work on you.”
Ning Busan asked, “Why do you think I am the third category, Teacher?”
Saige asked, “Do you remember our first meeting?”
“At that time, I did a divination for myself. The result was that it was a good day to travel and that I would have an unexpected harvest. And then, I met you.”
“You appeared in my divination, which means you could be divined back then.”
“Now that you've become the Divine Envoy, perhaps the God of Light sealed your path of destiny to protect you.”
Ning Busan thought about it and felt that Teacher Saige's explanation made a lot of sense.
But because of this, he would have no way to deduce his own identity through divination.
However, Ning Busan was optimistic enough: “This is actually quite good. Even though I can't divine myself, if I ever face an unbeatable enemy in the future, they won't be able to determine my location through divination either.”
Saige couldn't help but say, “Actually, we don't really need to provoke enemies we can't defeat, do we?”
Ning Busan looked quite innocent. “Teacher, what are you saying? I love being kind to others the most!”
The corner of Saige's mouth twitched. “Right. Everything you say is right.”
If he had to use a word to describe Ning Busan, "black sesame tangyuan" would be very appropriate.
Sweet on the outside, dark on the inside.
...
Roman Lane.
Ning Busan rarely had guests at his house, but someone paid him a visit today.
It was an elderly man dressed in a dark blue formal suit. Although his temples were slightly gray, his back was as straight as a pine tree, his majesty not diminished in the slightest.
Pinned to his chest was a shining family crest that did not belong to any noble family Ning Busan knew.
“Forgive my unannounced visit, I hope you do not find it rude,” the elderly man said as he took off his hat and performed a gentleman's bow. “I am Duke Grayson.”
Ning Busan was startled.
A Duke?
As far as he knew, there was only one Duke within the capital, Duke Nigan. The other Dukes were all in their respective territories.
Embedded in Grayson's deep eye sockets was a pair of sharp blue eyes that seemed capable of seeing through everything.
He smiled and said, “His Majesty sent messengers with secret orders, commanding all Dukes to return to the capital at the fastest speed.”
Ning Busan sighed in his heart. It seemed the King was going to stir up trouble again.
He wondered if Novalia had received the news yet.
This Duke had shared such important intelligence right off the bat; he didn't seem to be here to cause trouble, but his purpose remained unclear.
Ning Busan stepped aside slightly. “Please, come in first.”
Ning Busan turned and walked to the tea table. He took tea leaves from the tin, placed them in the teapot, lifted the kettle, and poured hot water in. The tea leaves tumbled in the water, and the aroma of tea filled the room.
He picked up a teacup, poured a cup, and handed it to Grayson. “Please, have some tea.”
Grayson took the teacup, took a light sip, and asked curiously, “Aren't you the Divine Envoy? How is it that you don't have any servants attending to you?”
Ning Busan said, “I prefer to be alone.”
Having lived in a modern society for twenty years, certain thoughts and habits were deeply ingrained and could not be easily changed.
Ning Busan asked straightforwardly, “Lord Duke, may I ask what brings you here today?”
