At this moment, atop the city walls.
“Cap... Captain, wake up!”
The squad leader on duty was suddenly jolted awake by his subordinate. He flared up in annoyance. “What are you doing? Can’t you see I’m sleeping?”
“No, that’s not it, Captain! Look outside the city, over there...”
Seeing his subordinate’s face pale with terror, the squad leader’s expression shifted. He scrambled up from the ground and looked into the distance.
One after another, terrifying and massive creatures charged out from the distant forest. They were packed tightly together, and every single one was moving at an extreme speed.
“Are those... magic beasts? No, they’re monsters. Dammit!”
There were too many of them. At a glance, they seemed to cover the earth.
“Enemy attack! Go notify the others! What are you standing there for? Get to your defensive positions! Good grief, what on earth are these monsters?”
Anxious shouts erupted from the commanders in the distance.
The squad leader swallowed hard.
From his vantage point, it took only ten seconds for these creatures to sprint across 300 meters, and they were still closing in with incredible speed.
With a quick count, there were at least several hundred of them.
Just then, the frantic clanging of a bell rang out from afar.
“This is bad! The south gate is being invaded too! That’s the alarm from over there!”
Looking toward the source of the bell, they could see massive creatures scaling the city walls. Their razor sharp sickles sliced through the soldiers’ bodies with ease. When iron swords struck their carapaces, the blades were deflected by the sheer impact.
Without internal energy, one couldn't even break through their defense.
“What are you dazing off for? Brace for impact!”
An officer hurried past and gave the squad leader a sharp shove on the back. Only then did the man snap out of it. He hurriedly snatched up his weapon and shield, turning to face the edge of the wall.
Within minutes, a horrifying creature let out a low growl as it climbed up from the other side of the wall.
The smooth surface of the city walls did nothing to slow them down.
When a sickle over a meter long swung toward the squad leader’s head, he was momentarily stunned.
However, he still remembered that he was a Tier 3 warrior.
With this level of strength, unless the opponent’s weight far exceeded his own or was also a Tier 3 creature, they shouldn't be able to defeat him.
A green light flickered, coating his shield as he braced himself against the sickle’s strike.
Clang—
A dull, heavy sound echoed through the air.
It felt like a collision between several tons of metal. The vibration nearly made the squad leader cough up blood.
Before he could even recover, he realized the creature in front of him had launched an identical attack from another direction.
It was too fast. He was forced to use the sword in his other hand to block.
Just as he thought their weapons would clash, the terrifying creature suddenly retreated, circling to his left. Simultaneously, a new zergling vaulted over the wall and lunged, slicing through his legs from below.
“Aaargh!”
Following a bloodcurdling scream, the squad leader collapsed to the ground.
Even with his body protected by internal energy, he had still lost both legs.
As he lay there, his vision was filled with zerglings leaping over the top of the wall.
“It’s over.”
The thought flashed through the squad leader’s mind.
He never expected that the City of Darkness would truly face an invasion one day. Moreover, the attackers weren't humans, but a swarm of magic beasts rushing out of the forest.
A species he had never seen before.
...
“Enemy attack! Enemy attack!”
Guards ran through the city, frantically beating gongs and drums.
Signal fires were lit atop several massive towers, and the sound of countless bells rippled across the entire city.
“What’s happening?”
People ran out of their homes, only to see massive monsters breaking through the city wall’s blockade and descending from above.
Others crashed directly through the city gates, swallowing everything in their path like a rising tide.
They rampaged through the streets, and human flesh and blood were completely unable to stop them.
Their sickles acted like industrial cutters, slicing lives in half as they moved.
Only a very few soldiers managed to form a defensive line, but their preparations were far too inadequate. Before they could even grasp the situation, the entire city wall had already fallen.
...
Inside the tavern.
“You’re saying I don’t have the strength?” the Tiger King said, feeling as though he had heard the funniest joke in the world.
One of the strongest men in the City of Darkness was being looked down upon by a girl who had just arrived.
But he was still excited, especially by the doubt from someone so exceptionally confident and beautiful.
How wonderful would it be to shatter her beautiful illusions and make her crawl before him to beg for mercy?
But just then...
Clang! Clang!
Bells suddenly rang out from outside.
The Tiger King frowned and turned his head, faintly hearing voices from the street.
“Enemies! Monsters are attacking the city! The walls have fallen!”
Before long, people began running past the door in a panic.
“What’s going on?”
He noticed that the subordinates he had brought with him were no longer calm. They were looking toward the south gate with terror in their eyes.
“What happened?” He looked back toward the gate.
One of his men said fearfully, “There... there are monsters attacking the city. They’re here! They’re coming!”
“What monsters?”
The Tiger King’s heart sank, but he saw the silver haired girl flash a faint smile.
“I was telling the truth. You don’t have the strength.”
Bang!
With a loud crash, two zerglings leaped through a window over ten meters away.
The iron bars and glass on the window were completely unable to withstand their terrifying momentum.
The moment these two creatures landed, before they had even stabilized their stance, they swung their sickles and began a desperate slaughter of the crowd inside.
“What are these things?” The Tiger King was pale with shock.
He watched as Xia Jin gave a light hop and leaped out through the open window.
As she took a few steps back from the interior, two more zerglings took her place, launching an attack into the room.
Just like that, this small tavern suffered a surprise attack from four zerglings.
Although some warriors reacted in time to resist, they were still too late to stop the onslaught. In an instant, over a dozen people fell like wheat before a scythe.
The Tiger King roared, grabbing a morning star from beside his feet and swinging it at a zergling.
With a thunderous boom, the creature was knocked back over ten meters, slamming hard against the wall. Its head was visibly dented by the impact.
Terrifyingly, it actually stood up again, swaying unsteadily as it resumed its attack.
