Kraken stood in a corridor of a certain Order Alliance base, rows of data scrolling across the electronic screen in front of him.
He had only recently returned from Dusk Island, and before he could even begin to recover from his exhaustion, he had been pulled here to receive a new mission.
He was working back-to-back, without even a moment to catch his breath.
He was tired, but he didn't complain.
He was noble and upright. Even if his superiors didn't issue a mission, he would have found a way to do his part in opposing the dark and evil forces of the sea, striving to build a world of love and peace.
The screen displayed information about Avenia.
The place known as the Island of the Future. It was a place of blue and white buildings, holographic screens, and highly advanced technology—a location that felt like pure science fiction.
It was also a place of bloody slaughter hidden beneath the veneer of civilization.
Kraken’s gaze lingered for a few seconds on the lines of bolded intelligence.
Participants would have their consciousness uploaded for indiscriminate killing within a virtual space. Spectators could place bets or even participate directly.
His brow furrowed. How could such evil exist in the world?
Just then, his phone chimed.
"Preliminary preparations are complete. The mission is about to begin. Please be ready," a voice said from the other end. It was the child-like leader.
Kraken acknowledged the order. "I will enter the Killing Competition arena on time and find a way to gather intelligence."
The voice on the other end said nothing more, simply notifying him before ending the call.
Kraken put away his communicator and continued to study the data on the screen.
"You should leave the Order Alliance while you still can."
A lazy female voice suddenly drifted from behind him.
Kraken's back tensed instantly.
He turned to see the cheongsam girl standing behind him, holding a folding fan. He didn't know when she had appeared, how she had gotten in, or how much of his conversation she had overheard.
The base's security system was practically nonexistent to her.
"You..."
"Shh." The girl held the folding fan to her lips and winked. "Listen to me first."
Kraken fell silent.
The girl took a step closer, her expression becoming very serious. "The Alliance seems to harbor ill intentions toward you. They are deliberately sending you on these dangerous missions without even giving you time to rest."
Kraken remained silent.
The girl continued, "I already know what your new mission is."
"Once you participate in that so-called Killing Competition, you will be forced by circumstances. Even if you are a good person, others will treat you as a target."
"To survive, you will have to kill other participants. Under such conditions, I doubt you'll have the time or energy to gather any intelligence."
Her folding fan spun gently in her hand. "Furthermore, according to existing intelligence analysis, Avenia’s Killing Competition has existed for many years."
"The organizers aren't fools. They will certainly have numerous measures in place to prevent anyone from disrupting the game. They likely monitor all participants in real-time. Once you do anything unusual, you'll be marked as a suspicious individual."
"I think you know very well what the consequences would be."
Kraken's frown deepened.
The girl lowered her voice. "Based on current intelligence, the participants' consciousness will leave their bodies. At that time, your physical body will remain in place, completely unprotected."
"The Avenia authorities likely possess abilities related to mental interference. If they discover you're a mole, they will undoubtedly kill you immediately. Even if you're lucky enough to survive, you'll be severely injured."
Having said her piece, she watched Kraken quietly.
Her implication was clear.
The mission was far too dangerous.
If everything went smoothly, it would be fine, but if he were discovered, his end would surely be horrific.
The girl was unwilling to let Kraken take such a risk. She also felt a bit of frustration—why did Kraken have to be so noble and upright, stepping in whenever he saw an injustice? No one could stop him.
But she only complained inwardly. Based on her long-term observation of humans, someone who was noble, upright, beautiful, capable, and responsible without being a bleeding heart—and who possessed a beautiful outward appearance—was more likely to be favored by some unknown metaphysics.
In short, he was favored by destiny.
Kraken had all these attributes maxed out, which could be quite a headache at times.
The Order Alliance might have noticed Kraken's anomalies. From their perspective, sending a member suspected of being problematic on such a dangerous mission was simply a matter of making use of a disposable asset.
Kraken was silent for a long time.
He stared at the data on the screen, at the words 'Killing Competition,' where human lives were treated like grass and thrown into a game for the amusement of the wealthy.
His fingers slowly clenched, and when he finally spoke, his voice was firm.
"I know the mission is dangerous, but I still want to go."
The girl's brow furrowed slightly.
Kraken turned to look at her.
"Even without the Order Alliance, I can't stand that so-called Killing Competition. I want to use my own power to tear it down."
"Maybe my power is insignificant, but what if my little bit of strength is exactly what's missing?"
The girl looked at him, silent for a few seconds, and then sighed.
She seemed helpless, yet also indulgent. She closed her folding fan and tapped it gently against her palm.
"Since you insist, then I'll go with you."
Kraken froze. "What?"
"I'm coming with you. I can't let you get into trouble," the girl said.
Kraken's brow furrowed.
He had only recently met this girl. From Dusk Island until now, they had only seen each other a few times.
She had appeared out of nowhere, said all this to him, and was now suddenly offering to go on a dangerous adventure with him.
He was very confused.
Even if his subconscious felt a sense of familiarity with her, he was still very unaccustomed to this.
So, he instinctively refused. "How can I involve you in this trouble?"
"Besides, how would you even enter the game with me? Participant slots aren't exactly easy to come by."
The girl covered her mouth and laughed, her smile appearing mysterious and cunning under the lights.
"Don't worry, I have my ways." The folding fan unfolded gently in her hand, obscuring half of her face.
Kraken opened his mouth to speak but found he didn't know what to say.
The girl had already turned and was walking toward the end of the corridor.
"Prepare yourself well. Don't worry; I'll appear when necessary." Her voice drifted back to him as her figure disappeared around a corner.
Kraken stood where he was, staring in that direction, dazed for a long time.
On the screen, the data about Avenia continued to scroll.
