The card turned into a streak of cold light, striking directly at Mr. Niu's face.
Unexpectedly, Mr. Niu dodged it with a flexible, bizarre posture that an ordinary person could never achieve.
Zhong Mo's slash missed, slicing the sofa and coffee table in the room in half and leaving a deep gouge in the floor.
A look of irritation appeared on Mr. Niu's face, but before he could speak, two crows suddenly leaped from the shadows, their sharp beaks pecking straight for his eyes.
Mr. Niu retreated quickly, but Yue Shi followed up decisively, throwing a kick straight at his chest.
Bang— Struck by the kick, Mr. Niu flew backward, coughing up blood before slamming heavily onto the floor and knocking over a full trash can.
Yue Shi slowed his breathing and stepped into the room, looking down at Mr. Niu. The man's body was convulsing, blood continuously spewing from his mouth, quickly staining the floor red.
“He's not dead yet. There's still time if we send him for emergency treatment now.”
Hearing Yue Shi's words, Zhong Mo shook his head without a word and walked toward Niu Xiaohui's room.
Behind them, the other employees of Tulip Security Company heard the commotion and poked their heads in to peek, only to see the half-dead Mr. Niu lying on the floor.
They were at a loss; after all, Mr. Niu looked like a perfectly normal person in every way.
Zhao Lin held the detection device, frantically checking everywhere. Seeing the green light, his face turned pale.
But then he thought, even if a civilian was accidentally injured during the process of dealing with a supernatural incident, the company and the transcendents would be the ones to take the heat. The responsibility shouldn't fall on him.
Zhao Lin's heart settled back into his chest. He nonchalantly moved away from the crime scene, trying to lower his presence.
But Zhou Zhiheng wasn't as calm as Zhao Lin. After all, he was the group leader for this operation, the nominal person in charge.
“Could you have made a mistake? Should we call an ambulance?” Zhou Zhiheng asked anxiously.
“Probably not,” Yue Shi said from the side.
“'Probably'?” Zhou Zhiheng's voice rose several notches instinctively.
“You should trust Zhong Mo's judgment,” Yue Shi said with a chuckle.
Zhou Zhiheng understood in an instant. The blame could be pinned on Zhong Mo, but Zhong Mo was a transcendent...
Sensing Zhou Zhiheng's concerns, Yue Shi comforted him, “Don't worry, there's a high probability this man really is a problem. When Zhong Mo attacked him earlier, he actually managed to dodge from such close range. An ordinary person doesn't have that kind of ability.”
Zhou Zhiheng gave a bitter smile. “I hope so.”
Since it had already happened, he could only draft a follow-up plan based on the worst-case scenario.
Zhong Mo knocked on Niu Xiaohui's door repeatedly, but there was still no answer. His patience finally ran out. He clenched his right fist, shifted his shoulder to gather strength, and smashed a punch into the wooden door.
Crack— A hole was punched through the door.
Zhong Mo reached through the hole and forced the door open.
The shadow beneath Yue Shi's feet writhed, and his fingertips transformed into claws, ready for action.
Zhou Zhiheng, Zhao Lin, and the others had already retreated to the doorway, watching Zhong Mo's every move.
Surprisingly, Niu Xiaohui's room was empty.
The floor was clean and tidy, the quilt was neatly folded at the head of the bed, and a thin layer of dust had settled on the windowsill. It looked as if it had been vacant for a long time.
Zhong Mo looked around, then bent down, searching for something under the bed.
Soon, he pulled a jar out from the corner.
The jar was plastic, somewhat cloudy and yellowed, but that didn't stop them from seeing what was inside—two hearts, shriveled and dehydrated as if they had been roasted or cured and specifically kept as a collection.
Zhong Mo turned around and showed the plastic jar and the hearts inside to everyone.
Zhou Zhiheng's eyes widened in shock, and the others felt a wave of revulsion. Just as they were about to step forward, Zhong Mo waved them back, signaling them to move further away.
Zhong Mo placed the plastic jar on the floor, his gaze scanning every corner of the room.
“Are you sure the Heart Thief is still here?” Yue Shi asked softly.
Up until now, the Heart Thief had never left any visual evidence, and no one even knew what his true form looked like.
“I'm certain.” Zhong Mo's face was solemn, not daring to let his guard down for a moment.
Yue Shi didn't press further and began to scan the room as well.
After a moment, their eyes converged on a wardrobe.
The wardrobe was old and dilapidated, with a dark brownish-yellow surface. It was surrounded by clutter and looked quite unremarkable.
Zhong Mo reached out cautiously, but as soon as he touched the wardrobe, he pulled back as if he had received an electric shock. He looked at Yue Shi. “Touch it. The texture is completely wrong.”
Yue Shi lightly brushed it with his index finger, his eyes narrowing. “This feels like... human skin!”
The sensation wasn't that of human parchment that had been stripped, degreased, and tanned, but rather living, elastic, textured human skin!
The two exchanged a look. Zhong Mo grabbed the wardrobe handle first and pulled hard, but despite the veins bulging on the back of his hand, the wardrobe didn't budge.
“Move aside, let me.” Yue Shi stepped forward and swung his claws, instantly leaving five deep gouges on the wardrobe.
An aura of decay spread rapidly. A layer of rotten skin actually peeled off the surface of the wardrobe, accompanied by a faint, strange hissing sound.
As the skin cracked and fell off bit by bit, the wardrobe's original light-yellow wood grain was revealed. However, because Yue Shi had used too much force, the wardrobe itself began to rot along with it. In an instant, it turned into decayed wood that looked like it would crumble with a single puff of wind.
“Watch out!” Zhao Lin, standing outside, suddenly cried out.
The green light on the supernatural detector went out, replaced by a bright, high-frequency flashing red.
The supernatural entity had appeared!
The next second, with a bang, the wardrobe in front of them suddenly exploded.
The wood splinters and rotten skin fragments didn't scatter randomly; instead, they shot in a concentrated burst toward Yue Shi and Zhong Mo.
Yue Shi, quick on his feet, retreated behind Zhong Mo. Several more crows leaped from the shadows, spreading their wings to form a second layer of protection.
Zhong Mo was a beat slower, but he remained calm as he threw out a card.
The card depicted a black drawing of someone “dodging a long blade slash,” with the word 【Flash】 written at the top.
After playing the card, an invisible shield seemed to appear in front of Zhong Mo, blocking all the incoming debris.
The contents of the wardrobe were fully exposed: countless black, thread-like tentacles writhed frantically, wrapping around numerous still-beating hearts and emitting a foul odor.
With those hearts as cores, the spreading black tentacles, like countless nematodes clustered together, quickly constructed humanoid monsters one by one.
Outside the door, the employees of Tulip Security Company were retreating in an orderly fashion. They couldn't interfere with what was coming next; it could only be left to the two transcendents.
