A medical team led by a transcendent with healing abilities provided free checkups and psychological counseling for citizens injured or traumatized during supernatural incidents.
They even held a small groundbreaking ceremony at the site of a heavily damaged school.
The Investigation Bureau also deployed a portion of its field and clerical staff to assist the Glory Association in maintaining order at the event sites, preventing chaos and stampedes.
Everything was orderly, filled with humanitarian care and positive energy.
Yue Shi watched it all with cold eyes.
The charitable aid was real; the victims and their families were indeed receiving help.
Even if it was just a show, being able to go to this extent was impressive.
Unfortunately, the true upper echelon of the Glory Association was nowhere to be seen. Only two public representatives were present to accept media interviews and the gratitude of the people.
The charity aid activities would continue for a while; this was only the first day.
That afternoon, near closing time.
An administrative assistant pushed open the door to the Special Operations Section office and solemnly informed everyone of a meeting.
“Are you serious? A meeting at this hour?” Wei Siqi asked in surprise.
The administrative assistant nodded. “It’s just an order from above. I’m only responsible for delivering it.”
“Fine.”
The group put down their work and followed the administrative assistant to the conference room.
The meeting was held in the Investigation Bureau’s large conference room.
The administrative assistant pushed the door open, revealing five people already seated at the conference table.
Ling Xun sat at the head of the table in a crisp uniform, his expression more serious than ever before.
Opposite him sat four people. Their uniform white clothing announced their status as members of the Glory Association.
Yue Shi’s gaze immediately fell on the figure with his back to the door—
It was a silver-haired old man. Though it was only his back, it was like a blinding bolt of lightning striking Yue Shi’s mind!
His heart skipped a beat uncontrollably, then hammered against his chest with a force that was almost spasmodic!
Blood rushed to his extremities before surging back to his heart, sending a soul-deep shiver of fire and ice through him.
Su Yuanhe!
The name was like a poisoned needle driven deep into Yue Shi’s nerves. Though his face wasn’t visible, that frame and posture were etched into the depths of Yue Shi’s memory.
He forced down the killing intent that nearly erupted from him, quickly steadying his breathing. His gaze seemingly wandered to the person beside the old man.
It was a man with no distinguishing features in his face, height, or build. He was the kind of person who would disappear completely in a crowd, looking like an ordinary bodyguard.
But how could anyone by Su Yuanhe’s side be ordinary?
The entrance of Yue Shi and the others immediately drew attention.
The seemingly ordinary bodyguard, a muscular man with a crew cut, and a glamorous woman with long curly hair and a striking figure all glanced back at them. Their eyes held no emotional fluctuations.
Only the silver-haired old man remained with his back to them, as if the commotion behind him was beneath his notice.
“You’re here. Everyone, take a seat,” Ling Xun’s voice broke the brief silence.
The director was not participating in this meeting, making Ling Xun the highest authority present.
Yue Shi moved mechanically with the crowd, choosing a seat that allowed him to observe Su Yuanhe while remaining inconspicuous.
He could feel his fingertips turning slightly cold.
Ling Xun didn’t waste time with pleasantries and simply pressed a button on the remote.
The projection lit up—
“Agh—!”
A scream so shrill it was distorted rang out first. The footage was blurry and shook violently.
After a moment, the image stabilized, and the camera focused on a figure.
When that face appeared on the screen, Yue Shi was slightly stunned.
It was the director of the Qingshan Sanatorium.
In the video, the director faced the camera with a strange, twisted smile—one forced into an expression of compassion.
Accompanying his smile were continuous screams in the background, as if someone beside him was being subjected to extreme torture.
The footage didn't last long. The director seemed to sense something and raised an eyebrow in surprise. “What is this thing?”
Then, a palm reached out to cover the lens.
The screen went pitch black.
The recording, only a dozen seconds long, finished playing.
The conference room fell into a dead silence.
At that moment, the silver-haired old man, who had been watching the projection, slowly turned his head.
Time seemed to stretch infinitely in that instant.
Yue Shi finally saw that face—stern, rigid, and humorless. Every wrinkle was carved with coldness and calculation. A red patch like a birthmark on the left side of his forehead stung Yue Shi’s eyes.
It was him!
It really was that old bastard Su Yuanhe!
It was too sudden.
He was completely unprepared. Yue Shi had thought there would be a period of maneuvering, testing, and searching for clues.
He hadn't expected his enemy to appear before him so abruptly, without warning and within arm’s reach!
Every negative emotion in the depths of his heart erupted like volcanic lava. Yue Shi dug his nails into his palms, only just managing to keep his facial muscles still.
Perhaps his emotions were too intense in that moment, or his gaze too terrifying.
“Hmm?”
Su Yuanhe seemed to sense something. His sharp eyes swept over them with precision. His gaze slowly moved past every transcendent of the Amber City Investigation Bureau. It seemed casual and unfocused, not lingering on Yue Shi, as if he were merely glancing at unfamiliar faces as a matter of routine, without any intent to offend.
However, Yue Shi felt an invisible gaze brush over his entire body, as if every inch of his skin was being scanned by some precision instrument.
He wasn't worried about being recognized.
His name, identity, and appearance were all vastly different from the body he had used when he first arrived in this world.
Yue Shi’s heart thrashed wildly in his chest, but on the surface, his eyes remained blank, mirroring the expressions of everyone else. In his mind, countless bloody images of tearing the man into ten thousand pieces flashed by.
At that moment, the glamorous woman with long curly hair spoke up. “Before arriving in Amber City, we passed through the area where the Qingshan Sanatorium is located. In the spirit of humanitarianism, we originally intended to clear out that supernatural domain to prevent more innocent civilians from being harmed. Unfortunately, we underestimated its danger. The companions we sent to investigate ahead of us... were lost inside.”
She paused, a fitting look of solemnity appearing on her exquisitely made-up face. “Based on our subsequent observations and comparisons with previous intelligence, the director of Qingshan Sanatorium seems to have undergone some kind of unknown evolution recently, and his strength has become even more unpredictable and mysterious than before.”
