The doctor adjusted the instrument's parameters and stood up, skillfully attaching several electrode patches to Yue Shi's forehead and temples.
Once finished, he sat in the chair opposite Yue Shi, next to a computer displaying various fluctuating wave curves.
"Mr. Yue Shi, I'm going to ask you a few questions. You only need to answer truthfully based on your first instinct," the doctor said.
"Understood," Yue Shi replied, his hands resting steadily on the metal chair's armrests.
The doctor smiled and suddenly held a color photograph in front of Yue Shi's eyes, asking without warning, "Have you seen this vehicle?"
Yue Shi's breath hitched ever so slightly. The photo was of the very same armored transport vehicle he had robbed the night before!
After asking the question, the doctor raised his chin, his gaze locking onto Yue Shi like a hawk's while he watched the data fluctuations on the computer screen out of the corner of his eye.
In an instant, countless thoughts flashed through Yue Shi's mind simultaneously.
Who was this doctor? Why was he asking this? Was he the owner of the stolen goods?
Perhaps he wasn't a doctor at all. What was his true identity? Was he sent by the Investigation Bureau, or had another faction infiltrated the hospital?
Was the item stolen last night actually related to the Investigation Bureau?
The earlier calm had indeed been an illusion. The investigation was unfolding in an unexpected way, striking directly at the heart of the matter without any preamble!
If it were anyone else caught off guard by a question about a crime they had just committed, their internal shock would have been impossible to hide from precision instruments, no matter how well they managed their expression.
But Yue Shi was not an ordinary person. He had already mentally prepared himself for sudden complications the previous night. When he first stepped into this examination room, the peculiar fragrance in the air had already put him on high alert.
Moreover, he possessed hypnosis abilities. His racing thoughts didn't waste a single second, instantly smoothing over any emotional ripples and simulating the most logical reaction.
A look of appropriate confusion crossed Yue Shi's face, his brow furrowing slightly as he countered, "I've never seen this vehicle. Why are you asking me this?"
On the computer screen, the curves representing emotional fluctuations spiked, but they remained well within an acceptable, normal range.
Anyone would show some emotional fluctuation when suddenly asked a strange, irrelevant question.
Staring at the screen, the doctor explained casually, "My questions might seem a bit random, but this is a normal part of the evaluation. Don't worry about it."
He then tapped a finger on the photo, pointing to a design on the transport vehicle—a golden emblem of two hands cupping a flame—and threw out a second question:
"Think back. When was the last time you saw this symbol?"
His tone remained steady, yet it carried a heavy suggestive weight.
This time, Yue Shi's data fluctuated even less. He answered expressionlessly, "Never."
"Alright." The doctor nodded, seemingly satisfied with the answer.
His tone shifted. "Now, please try to empty your mind. Don't think about anything at all."
Yue Shi cooperated by relaxing his body and letting his gaze go blank, curious to see what other tricks the man had up his sleeve.
About half a minute later, the doctor signaled the end of the test with extreme perfunctoriness.
His fingers tapped on the keyboard, and a printer spat out a report.
The doctor glanced over the report, his previously cold attitude gradually replaced by arrogance.
"The report shows your mental state is fine. You can leave now." He waved his hand as if shooing away a fly.
Yue Shi slowly and methodically removed the electrode patches from his head himself.
He stood up, a sinister expression appearing on his face. "No rush. You're finished with your questions, but now it's my turn to ask you some."
The doctor froze, and before he could react, a hand had already clamped firmly around his throat, slamming him down onto the computer desk.
The immense force left the doctor gasping for air, his face turning a deep shade of red.
Yue Shi's fingertips had become pitch-black and sharp, ready to pierce the doctor's neck and turn him into a corpse at any moment.
"Wh-what are you doing? Let go!" the doctor squeezed out in a broken voice, his eyes filled with shock and rage.
Yue Shi looked down at him and asked, "Who are you?"
"Let me go first!" the doctor glared.
Yue Shi tightened his grip. "Answer my question first. Otherwise, I wouldn't mind executing you on the spot on the charge of 'attacking a public official of the Investigation Bureau.'"
"You... do you have any idea who I am?! How dare you treat me like this! Let go, or I'll make sure you regret it!" the doctor threatened viciously. Despite being pinned down, he seemed to have no fear of consequences.
Yue Shi's expression became even more dangerous and malicious as he clenched his other hand into a fist.
Moments later, a series of pained screams echoed within the soundproofed examination room.
A few minutes later—
"Stop!"
The door to the examination room was kicked open, and Ling Xun rushed in with a frantic look on his face.
As soon as he entered, he saw Yue Shi beating the doctor.
"Stop hitting him! Stop!" Ling Xun roared.
Yue Shi paused, his fist hovering in mid-air, though the hand gripping the doctor's hair didn't loosen in the slightest. He looked at Ling Xun and asked tonelessly, "What are you doing here?"
"If I hadn't come, something terrible would have happened! Let go! This is a special commissioner from headquarters, Mr. Wang."
Ling Xun looked at Mr. Wang's battered state and felt a massive headache coming on.
"Huh?" Yue Shi rolled his eyes and said sarcastically, "With an attitude like that, he's actually a special commissioner from headquarters? Tsk tsk... the pedestal I put headquarters on just shattered completely."
He let go, tossing Mr. Wang onto the floor like a piece of trash.
Mr. Wang clutched his stomach and groaned in pain, his hairstyle completely ruined, all of his previous arrogance gone.
Ling Xun took a deep breath to steady his emotions and first had the medical staff rush in to take Mr. Wang away for treatment.
Then he asked Yue Shi, "What kind of conflict did you two have? Why did you go so far?"
"This counts as going far?" Yue Shi twirled a lock of his long hair around his finger, his tone nonchalant.
Ling Xun choked on his words, almost forgetting how fierce this man could be.
Yue Shi let go of his hair and looked toward the door, explaining, "I'm not some violent maniac who hits people on sight. It's just that the guy was far too suspicious."
"Look at him. With that flashy hairstyle, does he look like a proper doctor? He asked me some very strange questions and then perfunctorily finished a formal evaluation in less than thirty seconds before trying to kick me out. With such a suspicious individual, of course I had to ask a few questions, but he actually threatened me. If I didn't hit him, was I supposed to invite him for tea?"
Yue Shi didn't mention that he was the one who initiated the physical confrontation. "If he had put in even a little effort to act the part, I wouldn't have bothered with him. He's just stupid for coming here and looking for trouble."
Ling Xun massaged his temples helplessly. He should have known this would happen!
