Chapter 5 · Volume 1

First Time Scavenging

She had thought about the cruelty of the cultivation world, but she had assumed it was limited to struggles between cultivators. Just like earlier when she did not show herself—putting aside whether she had the ability to save him, even if she did, why should she rescue someone of unknown character?
But she had never imagined that the struggles between cultivators and demon beasts would be so bloody, leaving not even a whole corpse behind. No wonder cultivators wanted to kill demon beasts on sight...
She now had a much more concrete understanding of the cruelty of the cultivation world.
She was all alone. She had to be extremely cautious and absolutely could not allow herself to become a stepping stone for other cultivators.
Only...
Sometimes, once you are in the world, you cannot help yourself. Her desire to remain cautious would soon be gone forever, not to mention that the people around her in the future would never let her keep a low profile...
After a long time, the two demon beasts finished eating and leisurely departed. A good while later, after sensing no other demon beasts nearby, Jiang Lu finally jumped down from the tree and approached the pile of torn clothes.
Only the cultivator's head remained there, a gruesome sight. Fortunately, the face was not turned toward her, or she really couldn't guarantee she wouldn't throw up.
Using a branch to push aside the clothes, she spotted a bag on the ground. Opening it, she found a few scrolls and about a dozen spirit stones.
She unrolled the scrolls. One was the Cleansing Spell, one was the Fireball Spell, and the other was the Rainmaking Spell—three basic spells.
Fortunately, she could understand them.
Jiang Lu left the area and walked several li away until there was no one around.
She tried casting them several times following the incantations and hand gestures of the spells. Although the three spells were basic, she had absolutely no foundation, so it was like crossing a river by feeling the stones.
She practiced until nightfall, barely managing to learn the Cleansing Spell.
By this time, she had long forgotten her hunger. If she did feel hungry, she would pick a few spiritual fruits that had been pecked at by birds and beasts to eat.
Spending a month in the forest, she relied on her own trial and error to finally learn the three spells. However, if she wanted to use them proficiently, she still needed constant practice.
She let out a breath. After more than a month, she had accidentally stepped into the first layer of Qi Condensation, which had made her a little smug. Yet, it had taken her a whole month just to learn three basic spells. Surely, it was much easier for others to learn.
Other cultivators: “We never thought it was easy! Slander! Pure slander!”
Looking at the fireball in her palm, she realized that if she encountered a demon beast now, she wouldn't have to worry about being completely defenseless. These spells would at least allow her to hold her own against one.
It was also a perfect opportunity for her to get some proper experience.
She stored the scrolls and spirit stones into her space and hurriedly left.
She then headed in the opposite direction of where the two demon beasts had gone, her departing figure concealed by the giant leaves.
After walking for a long time, she saw a hollow in a tree. The hollow was wrapped in various vines that emitted a faint green glow.
Generally, the more vibrant and beautiful a plant was, the more dangerous it would be, but she didn't recognize what this was.
She gripped her clothes tightly, wrinkling the fabric, feeling like she was completely illiterate since she didn't recognize anything.
Damn it!
At this moment, she fully understood why cultivators joined noble families and sects. When it came to resources, ordinary people simply had no access. Even if some treasures were placed right in front of them, they wouldn't be able to recognize them.
“If I get the chance, I must join one of those forces and learn about all the spiritual plants and demon beasts in the cultivation world,” she secretly resolved.
Then, as if suddenly remembering something, she let out a chuckle. She had her space!
Regardless of whether it was poisonous or not, precious or common, she could just plant it in her space first. Once she recognized it in the future, she could always take it out.
With that in mind, she stared intently at the vine, convinced that it must be something good.
She walked over, but before her hand could even touch the vine, it vanished from before her eyes.
She froze in place.
She looked around, blinking repeatedly. Where did her giant vine go?
Then, acting on a sudden intuition, she entered her space with a thought and saw that the vine had already been planted in the soil not far from the spring.
“Does the space have an automatic planting function?”
She walked over but couldn't see anything unusual. Since the space was bound to her soul, there shouldn't be any issues.
In any case, it was a good thing. If this was how it worked, as long as she got close to these spiritual plants in the future, would the space automatically collect them?
She would test it again when she had the chance. With that thought, she exited the space.
After she left, a small light orb emerged from the spring, stealthily watching Jiang Lu depart.
It then flew out of the spring and headed toward the vine. With a flash of the light orb, a small hollow appeared in the vine.
The orb wiggled a few times and nestled inside contentedly, its soft glow reflecting its current happiness.
“Hehehe~”
Its home would soon return to its former state. The little light orb wiggled, wondering why its master hadn't looked for it, but then it figured she might just be too shy.
Since that was the case, it would just let her be.
It would be the one to spoil its master!
Seeing the cave revealed after the vine vanished, Jiang Lu cautiously walked inside.
“You stinky dragon, give me back my divine power!”
On the ground was a round, red creature. Its wings were flapping furiously, and the three golden feathers on its head were standing straight up in anger.
Its golden beak was almost twisted with rage.
Opposite it, a small yellow snake was coiled on the ground, its head drooping.
Hearing this, the snake immediately flicked its tongue and stretched its body, its golden eyes filled with defiance.
“Why should I?! It was clearly your fault! My divine power is gone too!”
“It's your fault!”
“It's your fault!”
As they argued, the two of them began to tussle, the snake's body tightly constricting the bird.
“Cough, cough! You stinky dragon, let go of me! You're going to choke me to death!”
The red bird's tongue poked out slightly as it hastily cried out.
The yellow snake gradually loosened its grip and coiled up once more, its head drooping to the ground.
“Then what do we do now? Without magic, how are we any different from ordinary spirit beasts? Actually, even ordinary spirit beasts have magic. The two of us have absolutely nothing. We might even get caught and turned into soup.”
“What can I do? This is the lower realm, after all.”
“Just wait until we go back. I'll definitely show that stinky thing that ambushed us what we're made of!”
The red bird spoke with a fierce look in its eyes.
Hearing this, the snake nodded in agreement. Indeed, it was all because of that thing!
What did the fight between those two have to do with them? Just wait until they had a chance to go back.
“So what do we do now?”
The yellow snake asked. The red bird thought for a moment and took a step forward with one claw.
“For now, our only option is to find a way to form a contract with a human and make them work for us!”
A contract!
The snake's eyes lit up, and it slithered in front of the bird in a flash.
“You mean...?”
“The humans in the lower realm are weak. We'll find an opportunity to form a contract with one. That way, as their strength increases, our strength will naturally recover. Once we're fully restored, we can just cancel the contract. Since people of the lower realm are weak, we won't suffer any severe backlash even if we cancel it...”
“Hehehe—”
“Then let's quickly find a sucker!”
The snake and the bird exchanged a glance and let out a burst of bizarre laughter.
Suddenly, a sound came from outside the cave. They looked at each other and immediately hid.
Jiang Lu stared into the dark cave, where only a few crystals emitted a faint glow.
“How is there nothing here? According to game logic, a hidden cave like this should have some good loot!”
She muttered to herself, using a branch to poke around. Suddenly, she saw a red figure and a yellow figure pounce toward her at lightning speed.
