With every word Su Wan spoke, the expressions of Liu Chengren and Zhao Yufen grew uglier.
Liu Chengren’s face was especially flushed, his breathing becoming rapid and shallow.
“When the Su family was in its prime, you all followed along to enjoy the wealth and prestige, taking every advantage you could.”
“Now that the Su family has fallen on hard times, you suddenly think Liu Xin has bad luck and consider her a burden?” Su Wan’s voice abruptly turned sharp, carrying a thunderous rage.
She pointed at Lele, who was still sobbing in Liu Xin’s arms. “You could even bring yourselves to push your own grandson?”
“Liu Chengren, Zhao Yufen, has your conscience been eaten by dogs?!”
“To protect your pathetic status and shares, you’re willing to sacrifice your own daughter and grandson without a second thought, tossing them away like trash!”
“Liu Chengren,” Su Wan sneered.
“Given that you’re a mediocre, spineless coward who only knows how to enjoy the fruits of others’ labor, what would you even be in the Liu family without Liu Xin? Would you have what you have today?”
“And now look at you, biting the hand that fed you. You’ve completely disgraced the Third Branch of the Liu family with your ungrateful, cold-blooded, and petty behavior!”
Su Wan’s words were like a rapid-fire barrage—fast, ruthless, and cutting straight to the heart. She tore the hypocritical and selfish veil of the Liu couple to shreds.
Liu Chengren was so enraged that his blood pressure spiked. The words “mediocre, spineless coward” especially stabbed at his most sensitive nerves like poisoned needles.
He pointed at Su Wan, his finger trembling and his lips quivering. “You… you… how dare you! Pure nonsense!”
He couldn't catch his breath, his vision went dark, and his body swayed. He nearly collapsed backward, only staying upright because Zhao Yufen caught him.
Zhao Yufen was also pale. She had been rendered speechless by Su Wan’s rebuke. She wanted to argue but couldn't find a single reason, leaving her filled with nothing but shame and fury.
Su Wan watched them coldly, without a hint of sympathy in her eyes.
Just then, steady and slow footsteps sounded from the stairs.
An old man dressed in a Tang suit slowly descended.
It was the true helmsman of the Liu family—Liu Zonghan.
Liu Zonghan was in his seventies. His hair was white, and his face was lean, but his eyes were sharp.
His gaze, like that of a hawk, swept over the messy living room, passed over his son and daughter-in-law’s unsightly faces, and finally landed on the imposing Su Wan.
For the first time, Su Wan’s gaze fell completely on Liu Zonghan.
Her look was sharp and direct, carrying an air of scrutiny and equal confrontation.
She remained firmly seated on the sofa, making no move to rise and greet the head of the Liu family.
In this living room where everyone else was standing, her seated posture appeared exceptionally conspicuous and arrogant.
Liu Zonghan’s gaze was like a deep, cold pool, profound and unpredictable. It finally settled on Su Wan’s composed and even slightly provocative face.
Seeing her lack of respect for her elders and her complete disregard for the Liu family, even a man as calculating as Liu Zonghan couldn't suppress the surge of anger from his heart. His expression darkened slightly.
He was about to speak, intending to use his usual authority to intimidate this former Miss Su who didn't know her place, when a sudden, intense itch struck his throat. An uncontrollable urge made him let out a cough.
That single cough seemed to trigger a hidden switch.
Immediately following it, the coughing became like a burst dam—unstoppable!
“Cough, cough… cough, cough, cough… Cough—!”
Liu Zonghan’s body trembled violently. His withered hand clutched his chest, his face flushed red at a visible speed, and his breathing became rapid and labored.
Each cough seemed to use up all his strength, as if he were trying to cough up his very lungs!
His previously straight back instantly hunched over, and he looked as if he might collapse at any moment.
“Father!”
“Old Master!”
“Quick! Support him!”
The living room was instantly thrown into chaos!
The butler, who was closest, and Liu Zonghan’s eldest son, Liu Chengye, who was following behind him, reacted the fastest. They rushed forward from both sides to firmly support Liu Zonghan’s swaying body.
“Medicinal tea! Quickly, go get the Old Master’s medicinal tea!” the butler shouted urgently to a nearby servant, his voice cracking.
The servant scrambled away to fetch it.
While supporting his father, Liu Chengye anxiously patted his back, his face full of worry and tension.
After his initial panic, Liu Chengren looked at his suffering father and then at Su Wan, who was sitting comfortably on the sofa watching coldly. A surge of malicious anger, mixed with resentment over his own incompetence, suddenly rushed to his head!
He spun around, his face flushed red as he pointed a finger at Su Wan. His voice was slightly distorted due to excitement and a hint of fear:
“Su Wan! Look at what you’ve done! It’s all because of you! If you hadn't brought Liu Xin here to act wildly and spout such arrogant nonsense, how could the Old Master have suddenly fallen ill from anger?!”
“If anything happens to the Old Master, I’m telling you, our Liu family will never let you off! The Liu family isn't something a little girl like you can bully at will!”
After yelling at Su Wan, he felt it wasn't enough to vent his anger, but he didn't dare do anything more extreme to her. Thus, his venomous gaze turned toward Liu Xin.
“And you, you wicked daughter!!” Liu Chengren’s voice rose sharply, filled with undisguised malice and reprimand. It was as if he wanted to pour out all his incompetence in front of his father and all his frustration from Su Wan onto her.
“You unfilial daughter! You jinx! Now that the Su family has fallen, you should have just accepted your fate! Why did you bring this troublemaker back?! Huh?!”
The more he cursed, the more agitated he became, his spit nearly flying into Liu Xin’s face.
“If something happens to the Old Master, it’s all your fault! It’s because you, a wicked daughter, disobeyed family rules and were unfilial, bringing an outsider back to anger your own grandfather!”
“How could our Liu family give birth to a daughter like you, who has no sense of shame and no regard for the family’s survival?! Do you have to see the Liu family ruined before you’re satisfied?! Huh?!”
Standing nearby, Zhao Yufen saw her husband start shouting and saw how dangerously the Old Master was coughing. She was also anxious and terrified.
Both she and Liu Chengren understood that as long as the Old Master was alive, they could maintain their glamorous lifestyle even if they were marginalized. Once the Old Master was gone, Liu Chengye would certainly not show any brotherly affection!
She also directed her resentment toward Liu Xin.
Unlike Liu Chengren, who still had some slight reservations about Su Wan, her accusations against Liu Xin were relentless. Her shrill voice was mixed with a sob:
“You wretched girl! How can you be so heartless! Do you want to kill your grandfather and our whole family?!”
“We gave birth to you and raised you. Is this how you repay us?! Bringing this Su Wan back to cause trouble—do you think our lives in the Third Branch were too easy?!”
“You ungrateful thing! We should never have given birth to you! Now look, you’ve angered the Old Master to this state. You’re going to drive us all to our deaths!”
