Chapter 142 ยท Volume 1

The Best Choice

At this moment, the situation at the gambling table had already settled.
After the Armor Hero asked why the Battle-Damaged Guy wanted him to handle the revenge, the Battle-Damaged Guy quickly answered his question.
"Because you are from the same world," the Battle-Damaged Guy said calmly, his tone carrying a faint hint of helplessness. "I might not be able to find him later."
Even so, why were a mecha pilot and a guy in ancient-style clothing from the same world?
Did they both cross over from a cosplay convention?
Hearing this, the Armor Hero froze for a few seconds before laughing heartily and slapping the table. "Fine! It's a deal!"
"That guy was never any good to begin with. I've wanted to settle the score with him for a long time."
"Even if you hadn't proposed this condition, I wouldn't have let him off!"
Beside them, the Pale Scholar's face instantly turned ugly. No longer able to maintain his previous calm, he spoke up in a panic.
"You're talking nonsense! I didn't screw you over! We're from the same world, we should be from the same roots! How can you help an outsider against me?!"
"From the same roots?" The Armor Hero shot him a cold glance, his tone full of mockery.
"We don't even belong to the same country. Besides, when you were screwing me over, why didn't you think about us being from the same roots?"
"Hide well after you go back. Don't let me find you."
The Pale Scholar didn't dare say another word. He slunk out of the crowd and quickly disappeared toward the exit.
Watching the Pale Scholar's pathetic retreat, the Armor Hero snorted and turned to look at the Battle-Damaged Guy.
"Don't worry. Once I succeed, I'll try to contact you to prove that I'm a man of my word!"
"Good," the Battle-Damaged Guy nodded.
As the Armor Hero also turned to leave, the smile on the Battle-Damaged Guy's face gradually faded, and a complex look flashed in his eyes.
Just then, as if sensing something, his gaze swept across the crowd and landed precisely on Ren Yi, who was standing not far away.
Without the slightest hint of surprise, as if he had known Ren Yi was there all along, the Battle-Damaged Guy waved at him and stood up to walk over, his tone relaxed.
"Mr. Ren Yi, why are you here? Don't worry, in a little while, I'll have earned enough chips. When the time comes, I'll have to trouble you to help me issue the challenge."
Ren Yi smiled and met him halfway, his tone casual. "It's nothing. I just came over to cheer you on."
As he spoke, his gaze subconsciously swept over the Battle-Damaged Guy.
His face seemed much paler than before, and his lips had lost their previous color.
At that moment, the originally noisy atmosphere in the entertainment city seemed to be paused by an invisible hand.
It wasn't because of this side, but because of the figure slowly approaching from the end of the gambling tables.
The newcomer wore a well-tailored black suit, his hair combed meticulously, and a pair of silver-rimmed glasses on his face, looking refined and elegant.
But as he arrived, the people around him parted to make a path.
It was the current God of Gamblers of the entertainment city.
He seemed to have changed into a new set of clothes, appearing exceptionally formal.
He didn't look at anyone around him. His gaze went straight through the crowd and landed on the Battle-Damaged Guy.
His eyes were complex, carrying a bit of the melancholy of a long-awaited reunion, yet also a clear sense of distance.
The Battle-Damaged Guy's body tensed instantly. His originally pale face flushed with an abnormal redness. He stared at the God of Gamblers, his lips quivering.
But in the end, he only managed to squeeze out a cold interrogation: "You finally decided to show up."
The God of Gamblers walked to the head of the gambling table and sat down, slowly adjusting his cuffs. His tone was flat. "I knew you would come. You little ones from Tiangan World always did like to fixate on things."
Hearing the words "Tiangan World," Ren Yi had a moment of realization.
So, these two did indeed know each other.
Was the God of Gamblers also from that Tiangan World that had been ruined by its own people?
It was hard to say, but if he was, his words were certainly heartless enough.
A sharp glint flashed in the Battle-Damaged Guy's eyes. "You still remember? I thought you'd long since forgotten where you came from."
"Back then, you abandoned the world and hid in this entertainment city to be your carefree God of Gamblers with the Luck talent. Did you ever think about what the people outside have become?"
The God of Gamblers looked up, his gaze behind the lenses sharp as a blade, yet also carrying a hint of weariness.
"The survival of a world is not the fault of one person. I chose to stay; at least I could save myself."
Their conversation lacked context, but it instantly laid their grievances out in the open.
The atmosphere was tense, like a bowstring drawn to its limit.
Just then, the God of Gamblers suddenly pulled a stack of black-covered invitations from his pocket, placed them gently on the table, and pushed them toward the Battle-Damaged Guy.
He spoke calmly, "I know you want these. Not just the ones to leave the Instance, but also high-level invitations for the entertainment city, enough for you to take anyone with you."
The Battle-Damaged Guy looked at the invitations on the table, his eyes flickering. After a moment of silence, he said, "That's not what I want!"
He took a deep breath and stared intently at the God of Gamblers. "In this gamble, I'm not just betting for invitations."
The God of Gamblers shook his head as if he had expected this. "Aside from the pre-arranged items, I will not agree to any extra demands. You've got the wrong idea."
"I didn't plan on making any extra demands," the Battle-Damaged Guy said with a cold smile.
His words caused some confusion for the God of Gamblers, but he didn't press further, simply watching the Battle-Damaged Guy and waiting for him to continue.
"I just need to confirm something," the Battle-Damaged Guy said, turning his gaze toward the nearby waiter.
"According to the rules of the God of Gamblers' Challenge, if I win, the position of God of Gamblers belongs to me, and I will become the new God of Gamblers."
"And he will wash his hands of it and no longer participate in any gambles, right?"
As soon as these words came out, the surrounding whispers grew more intense.
Ren Yi was also stunned for a moment.
He had originally thought the Battle-Damaged Guy would bet for the God of Gamblers' talent or his life, but he hadn't expected him to bet for the God of Gamblers' "position."
Indeed, since it was called a "challenge," it was only natural for the winner to take the title. It wasn't that strange.
So, was this the Battle-Damaged Guy's "extra demand"?
Except this extra demand was actually the "challenge" itself.
Washing his hands of it? It certainly had a very... old-school underworld feel to it.
What was even more surprising was that before the waiter could even answer, the God of Gamblers didn't hesitate at all. He didn't even frown as he nodded directly.
"That is only right and proper."
His readiness caused the Battle-Damaged Guy to lose his composure for a moment.
The excitement, anger, and determination on his face all froze at this moment, as if he had thrown a punch into a bale of cotton.
"Didn't expect me to be so agreeable?"
Looking at him like this, the God of Gamblers suddenly let out a cold laugh, his tone carrying a bit of self-deprecation.
"Don't try to goad me. I'm agreeing to this not because your words moved me, nor because of guilt."
"It is purely because my talent tells me to do so."
He pointed to his own head and said flatly.
"Luck is never wrong."
"It tells me that agreeing to this bet is my best choice."
