Chapter 479 · Volume 1

Workshop, Desert, and Sea

At the mention of this, Alisa couldn't help but burst into laughter.
It was unclear whether she was mocking the Supreme Council, the warriors themselves, or if she simply found the whole situation hilarious.
“Ho ho, mana interference? That sounds quite interesting.”
Lan Qingyou’s eyes narrowed into slits the moment she heard the term.
Mana interference.
Even just the name suggested it was a significant threat to a witch like her.
When the time came, she would not only have to be careful but also try to craft some potions to resist it.
The best-case scenario, of course, would be to get her hands on the technology and study it thoroughly, but things rarely followed the most ideal path.
Therefore, she had to prepare for the worst.
After all, without mana, Lan Qingyou wouldn't even be able to float, let alone escape.
“By the way, have you heard about the degenerate races?”
Alisa called out to Lan Qingyou just as she was about to take flight.
“I know about them.”
“What about the Demon Hunters?”
“Demon Hunters?”
“It seems you don't. I'll give you a quick rundown then. They are a group that rose quietly during the Abandoned War...”
“A group? That's a fresh way to put it.”
Alisa hadn't even finished her sentence before Lan Qingyou began to interject.
But Alisa didn't mind at all.
In fact, if the Witch of the Tower actually possessed manners, she wouldn't be the Witch of the Tower.
“Yes, because they are all humans, yet they possess the attributes of evolved beings and can hold their own against them. They often go out in small groups of three to five to hunt any race that isn't human.”
“But unlike those who started the Abandoned War, these guys don't want blood—they only want lives.”
“And they treat evolved races and degenerate races with equal indifference.”
Equal indifference?
Was that even a normal way to use that phrase in this context?
Lan Qingyou truly hadn't expected the world to change so much in the ten months she had been trapped in the dungeon.
Or perhaps her disappearance itself had been the fuse.
Because she had been set up and trapped, someone had incited the Abandoned War.
Because the war broke out, it directly led to the deaths of millions. If one added the people at Alisa's workshop and other unknown locations, the death toll could easily reach tens of millions.
While ten million might not seem like a large number compared to a population of over ten billion,
the direct experience of more than half the population dying in certain areas within a mere two weeks caused the already unstable security of those regions to deteriorate further.
The end result was that all sorts of monsters and troublemakers had crawled out of the woodwork.
Between the Rose Duchy and these Demon Hunters, there were undoubtedly even more such entities in places she didn't know about.
However...
It was quite interesting.
After all, the world was composed of many elements, and society was no different.
With these elements acting as seasoning, life became much more entertaining.
Thinking this, Lan Qingyou waved goodbye to Alisa.
It wasn't until she flew out of the workshop that Lan Qingyou realized it was situated in a small town by a beach, with an endless desert stretching out behind it.
She could only say that whoever found this place must have done so by pure luck or accident; otherwise, finding it would be no easy feat.
She truly didn't know how those people had discovered this place.
Even more so, she didn't understand how Alisa and the people here had survived the early days after the transmigration.
They couldn't have just relied on sand and stone for materials and sea fish for food, could they?
Just thinking about that kind of life made Lan Qingyou shudder.
She was glad she had been assigned to a place like District 666.
Even if the people there were a bit trashy, the environment was decent. A desert region like this was Lan Qingyou’s least favorite type of place.
It was hot, and water was scarce.
In the city, besides the Hydra she had seen earlier, there were other synthesis beasts.
These were all managed by personnel dressed in white.
As Lan Qingyou flew overhead, these people looked up at the witch sitting on her broom.
And as they observed Lan Qingyou, she observed them in turn.
She noticed that these white-clad people were split into two types.
One type was the Workshop Witches she was very familiar with, known on the world channel as White Witches.
The other type was simply the city's residents.
These people were responsible for the city's daily maintenance, commerce, gathering, and other tasks.
Furthermore, while there were homunculi among them, most were used as soldiers and guards.
Because she hated the hot, dry desert, Lan Qingyou chose to fly along the coastline in first gear, enjoying the sea breeze.
As she flew, she took photos of the materials she had obtained and sent them to Diana.
These things needed to be converted from photos to text and then printed into booklets so that more witches could learn from them.
Of course, only basic knowledge could be distributed freely.
In-depth, advanced knowledge would require exams or other qualifications to access.
These matters were naturally left to Diana and the others. What Lan Qingyou needed to do now was travel the world and familiarize herself with this 'new world' as soon as possible.
Of course.
That was merely an excuse.
The real reason was simply that she wanted to follow the example of Adele and the others from the Tourism Department—to walk around and see the sights.
Regardless, now that she had the magic theory for portals, learning wouldn't be too difficult.
She could return whenever she wanted, so she didn't care about the time.
In passing, she also wanted to organize her thoughts and her mood.
The fact that she wasn't upgrading her shelter to Level 7 despite having the materials showed that she was currently feeling a bit listless.
Although she hadn't killed those hundred thousand witches herself, they probably wouldn't have died for such an absurd reason if she hadn't distributed the Witch potions to them.
Lan Qingyou didn't consider herself a sentimental person.
While she felt grief for the passing of these witches she had never met, she felt even more that they shouldn't have died in a way that was so utterly inhumane.
Lan Qingyou thought a lot as she felt the sea breeze.
But she couldn't find any clear answers.
In this state of mind, she saw land faintly appearing across the sea.
So, was this sea actually a strait?
At that thought, Lan Qingyou felt a flicker of interest and decided to fly straight across the water.
Shifting into third gear, she flew at a very low altitude, her toes almost skimming the surface of the water in the middle of the sea.
The feeling of flying in the middle of the ocean was an unprecedented experience, and it did much to dispel her previous melancholy.
The occasional 'little surprises'—like various poisonous flying fish or highly aggressive dolphins leaping out from beneath the waves—only served to relax her mind further.
