Chapter 454 · Volume 1

Invaders with No Way Back

After Margaret finished dealing with the matters in the Industrial Zone, she followed the orders previously issued by Diana and began purging the incoming enemies.
Back on Blue Star, there was a very interesting saying: "You're all surrounded—by me alone."
To anyone else, that might have been a humorous joke.
But for Margaret and the invaders attacking the Industrial Zone, it was anything but. No matter what others thought, those intruding upon the Industrial Zone couldn't bring themselves to laugh as they watched flying blades fill the sky, leaving nothing behind but the scent of "harvesting" wherever they passed.
These transmigrators naturally knew of the witches' power, but they hadn't expected them to be this strong.
"Don't... don't be afraid! There's only one of her!"
Some random mob shouted tremulously, trying to boost morale.
However, far from raising spirits, those near the teleportation circle even began to think about leaving after hearing those words.
As everyone knew, saying such things usually signaled that failure was imminent.
They were here to get evolution items and plunder, not to find failure.
Consequently, many people began to move toward other areas in secret.
After all, the witch across from them looked far too powerful, not to mention the horde of armed battle golems following behind her.
Those golems alone were enough to trade blows with them effectively.
With the golems pinning them down, the offensive would only become more difficult.
However, when those fleeing the Industrial Zone teleported to the Commercial Area hoping to scrounge for leftovers, they found the streets filled with golden statues.
No...
They weren't statues. They were real people who had been turned into that state after being struck by some unknown magic.
Run!
Forget everything else—just escape the danger first.
Looking at the witches and birdmen locked in combat in the sky, that was the first thought that came to this transmigrator's mind.
Thus, he teleported from the Commercial Area to the Academy District.
A place with such a name was bound to have books and other valuables. As a transmigrator who had survived this long, he naturally understood the importance of knowledge.
However, the moment he teleported there, he collapsed to the ground.
The entire area was bathed in an eerie green hue.
Poison!
Without needing identification or checking his status, the wandering transmigrator could see the problem immediately.
Only, unlike the previous times...
Now that he had collapsed, he could no longer go anywhere else.
"Heh, look, there's a live one here."
Susie, wearing her green magic robe, walked up to the unlucky soul. Beside her, a witch with a blank expression raised a giant hammer.
"Wait..."
The invader couldn't even finish his plea for mercy before the witch mercilessly hammered him to death right there in the teleportation circle.
"Dean, should we destroy the teleportation circle or take it?" the Hammer Witch asked Susie.
"Dismantle it and take it away."
Although Diana's order was to destroy them, it was better to take them if conditions permitted.
After all, teleportation circles were limited by materials; every one lost was one that couldn't be easily replaced.
"What about the injured and dead witches?"
"They've already been properly settled."
"Is the Toy Witch back yet?"
"She's back. She was escorted by several members of the Witch Group, including the Thorn Witch."
Earlier, the Thorn Witch and the others had wanted to save the deceased Moonlight Witch, so they had the Toy Witch hurry back.
As it turned out, while they were tending to the Moonlight Witch, the Winged People and other small races launched a rebellion. The group then rushed toward Typhon City, where the casualties were most severe, putting their newly gained theoretical knowledge into practice along the way.
After more than an hour of flight, they finally reached Typhon City.
There, they began performing "freshness preservation" on the fallen witches.
Susie clicked her tongue at the report.
It wasn't that they weren't welcome back, but their departure meant the grand array protecting the Abandoned Land could no longer be held.
The people running the grand array had left; there was no way that magic barrier would survive.
"It doesn't matter. We were short-handed anyway," Cynthia said, representing the Witch Group in response to the concerns raised by Susie and the others.
They really couldn't hold it now.
Lan Qingyou had taken twenty-two members of the Witch Group with her when she left, leaving the rest to barely maintain operations.
Now that three or four more had left for Typhon City to resurrect their fallen sisters, there was no longer any point in guarding the outer grand array.
"It's just as well. The original intent of that magic array was to allow everyone to walk and work freely outside during mana turbulence or mana tides."
"The design philosophy also included providing protection for the weak small races. But now that they've rebelled, there's no longer a need to protect them."
"Since they don't want a peaceful life, we'll just give them some excitement instead."
Cynthia felt no sympathy for these backstabbing traitors.
Putting aside the fact that these fellows were robbing, pillaging, and killing her own kin, the mere fact that their rebellion had caused her work to fall behind and hindered her research was enough for Cynthia to want them dead.
No... it wasn't just Cynthia.
Every member of the Witch Group felt the same way.
The witches didn't care at all whether those people lived or died.
Of course, there were certainly small races that hadn't participated in the rebellion.
But in these extraordinary times, no one had the luxury to care about them. If they were innocent and wanted to continue their lazy, peaceful lives, then they should have taken up arms to resist the rebels.
Otherwise, they might as well be dead.
After all, it was the Witch race that had provided them with a sanctuary in the first place.
"What about the other members? They can't just keep hiding in their shelters," Diana asked the Thorn Witch as they stood on the open ground of the Habitat being used as a temporary stopping point.
"The other members of the Witch Group will team up and head to the Abandoned City, the Harbor, and the other towns to back up the witches there. They'll also hunt down a few invaders while they're at it," the Thorn Witch said indifferently, acting as the liaison for the group.
For these small races with populations of only a few hundred or thousand, the end result of losing the Witch race's protection would be nothing but extinction.
If they didn't take up arms to stand with the witches, it only proved their nature as "fence-sitters."
Fence-sitters who wanted to play both sides in this situation were essentially asking for death.
Even if the witches didn't take action to "clean house," the rebels and invaders wouldn't spare these collaborators.
Do they really think their own blood can't be used to brew evolution potions?
