Zhang Haojun broke into a cold sweat just thinking about that day. "He just stood there with his head down, motionless, not even getting food. The people around him acted as if they couldn't see him."
"But I knew he was looking at me! He was really watching me the whole time!"
Zhang Haojun was becoming somewhat frantic, his speech accelerating.
"Later, he started appearing more and more frequently. While I was working, when I went to the bathroom, while I was eating, when I went home..."
"He kept getting closer to me!"
"That day when I went back to the dorm, there was clearly no one else in the elevator, but when the doors opened, I found him standing right there, only four or five meters away from me!"
Zhang Haojun's voice was shrill and piercing, and it somehow made even Gu Xiang Kai feel a bit uneasy.
"I asked others. I asked the people sitting next to me, and I asked the hall management. They all said they didn't see anyone."
Zhang Haojun's eyes were bloodshot. "How is that possible! He was right there! He was clearly right there! Why? Why am I the only one who can see him!"
Nan Yue gripped Zhang Haojun's shoulder, applying a bit of pressure. "Calm down."
Nan Yue's grip was a bit painful, but it helped him regain his composure.
"No one is following you."
Zhang Haojun took two deep breaths and slowly relaxed.
Indeed, after Gu Xiang Kai had warned him, he noticed that the person was gone.
In fact, someone had told him before that he was under too much stress. Besides, with so many people in the company, maybe someone really was just standing there resting.
It might not have even been the same person.
Zhang Haojun had been brainwashing himself with these thoughts, but the moment Nan Yue brought it up today, that fear and helplessness dragged him right back to that time.
"Did you see what he looked like?" This was the point Nan Yue was most concerned about.
Zhang Haojun shook his head. "I couldn't see clearly, but it should be a man wearing the same suit as us."
"And... he seemed to have some kind of disability?"
Gu Xiang Kai raised an eyebrow. "A disability?"
The company didn't even want people who were unattractive, so how could they hire someone with a disability?
Zhang Haojun scratched his head, sounding uncertain himself. "I also thought it was unlikely... but from the way he stood, it really looked like his leg or foot was injured."
"I can't quite describe it. Anyway, he didn't look like a normal person."
Zhang Haojun had been terrified out of his wits; he hadn't dared to look at the man closely.
However, both Nan Yue and Gu Xiang Kai were well aware that Zhong Jian's experience was likely similar to Zhang Haojun's, as he had also been frequently looking behind him.
He had also seen that "person" whom no one else could see.
So, did Zhong Jian die because that "person" finally reached him?
As Zhong Jian's body was carried away, the crowd gradually dispersed. Everyone returned to their workstations to rest, and Nan Yue left as well.
She headed straight for the top floor, clutching a stack of documents.
She was going to find Lan Jing Shui.
The decor on the 20th floor was incomparable even to the floor where Sister Lian worked. Nan Yue could only describe it as extremely extravagant; she even felt a pang of heartache before stepping onto the carpet that looked incredibly expensive.
Lan Jing Shui was at the same level as her, but he had been promoted earlier. When Nan Yue arrived, her attitude was very respectful.
To outsiders, Lan Jing Shui was Tan Xin's secretary, but even to scavengers, he was a top 20 powerhouse.
"A rare guest."
Lan Jing Shui wore a bespoke suit. Although he still looked lazy, Nan Yue did not dare to underestimate him.
"Have a seat. It's not the behavior of a gentleman to let a beautiful girl stand."
Once the office door was closed, Nan Yue handed over a document.
"This is our plan for next month."
Lan Jing Shui raised an eyebrow and opened the file.
The document was indeed a work plan, but on the back were all the clues Nan Yue had gathered so far, written by hand.
Lan Jing Shui skimmed through it at a glance and then threw the plan into the shredder.
"I understand. However, the general direction might change, so we'll need to discuss it again when the time comes."
Nan Yue nodded without showing any impatience. She had offered her greatest sincerity.
Lan Jing Shui had a smile on his face. This man was strange; he looked very lazy, yet he was inexplicably charming, possessing that "mature uncle" vibe that beauty-obsessed people often talked about.
Nan Yue said her goodbyes and left. Lan Jing Shui didn't say anything more, but Nan Yue felt she had done everything she could.
She didn't try to guess Lan Jing Shui's thoughts; that was a major taboo when dealing with those in power.
During dinner, Zhu Xi Ning complained a bit when she found out. She wondered why this powerhouse was only taking and not giving, having looked at all their information without sharing anything in return.
Nan Yue didn't mind. Even if it was just for the sake of networking, it was a good move.
"Sister Nan, Mr. Lan Jing Shui would like to invite you to have dinner with him."
Even though Lan Jing Shui was only a V6, he already had access to a private booth. Zhu Xi Ning immediately shut her mouth, hoping the powerhouse hadn't heard her complaints.
When Nan Yue entered the booth, a luxurious sashimi platter sat before Lan Jing Shui. He had his suit jacket draped over his shoulders, looking carefree and unrestrained.
"Sit."
"We're from the same batch, so we should look out for each other."
Nan Yue sat across from him and didn't hold back, immediately starting to eat.
Lan Jing Shui smiled, appearing to appreciate Nan Yue's straightforward style. The two of them finished the meal in silence.
"Two things."
Only when the host and guest were satisfied did Lan Jing Shui speak calmly.
"That dead person from thirty years ago... nothing can be found."
"The Mobile Division is responsible for handling trouble; it doesn't need anyone's direction."
Lan Jing Shui paused, resting his chin on his hand as he looked at Nan Yue. His long eyelashes drooped, and his eyelids were half-closed, giving him a relaxed appearance.
"I like pretty girls, so I'll give you a piece of news as a bonus."
"There are two dead people in the company. The other one is a woman."
In a flash of realization, Nan Yue understood something.
She put down her chopsticks and softly uttered two words.
"Jiang Su."
Lan Jing Shui smiled and gave a few casual claps. "Interesting."
"This mission is almost ready to end."
Nan Yue glanced at Lan Jing Shui, but he merely shrugged.
"I'm talking about myself."
"My method of ending the mission might not be usable for you, especially since you still want to take others with you."
"The good news is that there isn't just one path. If it's you, it shouldn't be difficult."
Nan Yue remained silent for a long time before a smile appeared on her face.
"Thank you."
She thanked him very sincerely, then stood up and walked out of the room.
Lan Jing Shui simply watched her with a smile the entire time, his chopsticks idly tapping against the wine glass in his hand, producing a series of irregular, crisp sounds.
"Wildflowers fill the mountains... the water flows on its own... man is at peace... between heaven and earth..."
As Nan Yue stepped out, she heard Lan Jing Shui softly humming something to the rhythm of the tapping. His somewhat husky voice gave the little tune an indescribable charm.
When Nan Yue returned, Gu Xiang Kai and Zhu Xi Ning were still waiting for her. She looked around at the people coming and going, but her expression was not good.
"We have to hurry."
Nan Yue frowned. "I suspect there might not be many scavengers left alive."
