"Alright, go to the 18th floor and report to Linda. You'll be working under her from now on."
Nan Yue spent less than two minutes on her hiring interview. She discovered the meeting room had another door that led directly outside.
Stepping out, she found herself in a lobby featuring high-end leather sofas and custom scents. Many attractive women were serving tea and water, while others handled guests at the reception desk.
On the other side of the lobby were eight elevators. Everyone was busy with their own tasks, and no one waited for her.
Nan Yue entered an elevator and pressed the button for the 18th floor.
Just as the doors were closing, a man rushed in and lit up the button for the 8th floor.
The man was drenched in sweat, his tie was crooked, and he was busy tidying his attire.
He only noticed the other person in the elevator halfway through his adjustments. "Hello."
Seeing the man's forced smile, Nan Yue responded with a smile of her own.
"Hello, I'm new here. Nan Yue, from the secretary post."
The man's eyes brightened, and he stood a bit straighter, introducing himself seriously. "I'm Geng Xin Hui from the Sales Department. My information is on the company's Feishu. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me for help."
Geng Xin Hui clearly wanted to say more, but the 8th floor arrived, and he had to say a hurried goodbye as he exited the elevator.
Nan Yue looked at her reflection in the stainless steel elevator walls and also noticed the camera behind her.
Are the employees here that enthusiastic? Even a newcomer gets such politeness.
As for the Feishu he mentioned, Nan Yue planned to look into it during her break.
Nan Yue stepped out of the elevator into a long corridor. A short-haired girl stood up from a reception desk on the left.
"Hello, you must be Nan Yue, right? Linda is waiting for you."
Nan Yue thanked her politely and followed her to the room at the end of the hallway.
The room was very large and covered in pure white carpet. Walking on it felt like stepping on clouds.
The layout was a room within a room, with a separate cubicle inside. Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass was the bustling city, and there were massive bookshelves and wine cabinets. This was likely the office of the woman from the interview.
Linda was sitting at a desk in the outer room. She was beautiful but stern. When she saw Nan Yue, she raised an eyebrow critically.
"A newcomer? It's been years since Sister Lian last hired a new secretary."
Nan Yue didn't know how to respond, but fortunately, Linda didn't require an answer. She tossed a thick folder to Nan Yue.
"This is the company's workflow. Sister Lian is in charge of business connections. You are responsible for following her and satisfying her every need."
"You only rest when she rests."
Nan Yue nodded.
Seeing her obedience, Linda's tone softened slightly. "Have you found a place to stay?"
Nan Yue froze. She hadn't found any information about accommodation in her bag and worried that a wrong answer might violate a taboo.
Seeing Nan Yue's somewhat awkward expression, Linda looked like she understood perfectly.
"Students who just graduated indeed have a hard time finding housing. There's a building behind the company with an agreement price where you can stay for now. Once your level increases, the company will provide housing."
As she spoke, Nan Yue happened to flip to the level introduction page. It turned out that Blooming Media Company used V1 to V10 to represent employee levels, with higher levels carrying more authority.
Nan Yue remembered the badge Linda wore had a V4 on it, while Geng Xin Hui in the elevator was a V9.
Nan Yue offered a flattering smile. "Then what level am I?"
Linda was looking at her rounded, polished, and painted nails. "V8."
"Secretaries are higher than other staff. Ordinary employees start at V10."
Linda tilted her head. Nan Yue now knew why Geng Xin Hui had been so polite to a newcomer.
"Then what level do I need to reach for provided housing?"
Seeing Nan Yue's naive girl act, Linda laughed. "V5 will do it."
Nan Yue recalled the manual stating that under normal circumstances, one moves up a grade every four years. Special contributions could be considered, but if performance wasn't outstanding and didn't receive approval from more than half of the five main leaders, one couldn't advance even after four years.
So, for a regular employee with good performance to rise enough to get a dormitory, it would take at least twenty years.
Nan Yue was shocked.
"Go to the Logistics Department first to check if all the items for our business department are complete. You can read the rest at noon."
Nan Yue sighed inwardly. The manual said that the lunch break was also divided by level.
V10 only had ten minutes, which had to include eating. Each grade higher added twenty minutes. She would have nearly an hour of rest.
And that was only if Sister Lian had no other work arrangements.
Nan Yue tucked the manual into her bag, said goodbye to Linda, and rushed to the elevators.
Blooming Media Company had twenty floors in total. The five leaders occupied five floors. Besides the 1st-floor lobby, floors 2 through 5 were the Sales Department, 6 through 9 were the Technical Development Department, 10 through 13 were the Branding Department, and 14 through 15 were the Administrative Department.
When Nan Yue reached the 14th floor, she saw four newcomers reporting to the Logistics Department. Two of them were scavengers who gave her a slight nod upon seeing her.
The Logistics Team Leader, who had been arrogantly lecturing them, immediately ran over when he saw Nan Yue.
"You're Sister Lian's assistant, right? Did Linda arrange something?"
Nan Yue waved the list in her hand. "I'm here to take inventory of the business department's items."
The Team Leader nodded repeatedly, called someone else to continue training the new rookies, and personally led Nan Yue to the warehouse.
Originally, seeing Nan Yue assigned work right after reporting made the four feel a bit schadenfreude, but after seeing the Team Leader's attitude, their expressions soured again.
Especially the two scavengers.
Nan Yue noticed the Logistics Team Leader's rank was V8, the same as hers. However, she knew the secretary position was very special. Because it was close to the boss, it held more implicit power than other employees of the same rank.
No wonder he was so polite.
The warehouse was in the basement. It could only be reached by taking the internal elevator in the 1st-floor lounge after reaching the lobby.
The Team Leader switched on the lights. The warehouse was massive; it was hard to imagine how the building could accommodate such a large space.
Shelves were arranged neatly in layers, looking as if they had been measured with an invisible ruler. Even the spacing between each piece of stationery was identical.
A person with obsessive-compulsive disorder might find this extremely comfortable, but it felt more like a source of fear.
Because it was too neat, it felt unnatural. Unnaturally tidy.
"The items the business department requested yesterday are on Shelf J. I'll take you there."
Nan Yue wanted to refuse. She had intended to check them herself, as warehouses were good places to hide details and find clues.
But the Team Leader was very insistent. "You just arrived and don't know the way. If I don't introduce everything properly, it means I'm not doing my job."
The excessive enthusiasm gave Nan Yue goosebumps. Since she was new and didn't understand the situation of this mission yet, she could only agree.
The inventory check lasted until 12:00 PM. Even Nan Yue's eyes felt sore from looking at the dense text on the list.
"That's about it for the check. Let's go eat first."
The Team Leader shook his head repeatedly. "You go ahead. There's just a little bit left. I'll go after I finish. Missing a few meals doesn't matter."
