The video gave Zhu Xi Ning goosebumps, mainly because the expressions of the three people on the screen were so strange.
It was as if something was plastered over their faces, leaving them devoid of expression, yet their physical movements suggested they were in a state of panic.
A sense of profound discordance permeated the footage.
Zhu Xi Ning copied the video to her phone, deleted the record, and showed it to Nan Yue during dinner.
By evening, news of Linda's resignation had spread throughout the company. Many had personally seen her trembling as she entered the hotel, but no one noticed when she left.
The way people looked at Nan Yue had changed; most eyes were filled with envy and admiration, while others were more cautious, barely daring to breathe as they passed her.
Nan Yue was indifferent to these looks and casually called Gu Xiang Kai and Zhu Xi Ning into her private booth.
Under the cover of the noisy environment outside, Zhu Xi Ning showed the video to Nan Yue.
"They didn't speak, otherwise we might have been able to guess what was happening."
Zhu Xi Ning was a bit confused, but Gu Xiang Kai reached out and tapped the screen. "They shouldn't be able to see."
Gu Xiang Kai explained, "There was a time when I got into a fight and my eyes were injured. I installed surveillance at home during that period because I was afraid of people seeking revenge. Looking back at the footage of myself groping around the house, it looked exactly like this."
Zhu Xi Ning took a slight breath. "They're blind?"
No wonder the woman she hadn't met kept touching her own face.
"It's not that they're blind. It's that... it looks like there's something on their faces blocking their vision."
Nan Yue didn't think the woman was touching her eyes; she was mechanically touching her face over and over, as if trying to tear something off.
But there was clearly nothing on her face.
"There's something there that the surveillance can't capture."
Nan Yue pondered for a moment. "But there were definitely more than just the three of them that night."
Zhu Xi Ning realized what she meant. "The Mobile Division?"
Nan Yue nodded. "Tan Jiaojiao must have violated a rule, and it might have even involved innocent employees. These three were likely handled collectively by the Mobile Division."
And the place where they were handled was the warehouse.
Nan Yue hesitated for a moment. Just as she was struggling to decide whether to check the warehouse, Sister Lian suddenly called.
"Come to my office at 10 PM."
Nan Yue agreed immediately. She looked at Gu Xiang Kai. "If I don't come back tonight, you go see who the person jumping off the building at dawn is."
"Don't let him discover you."
Among the three, Zhu Xi Ning focused on intelligence and intuition, so this task could only be given to Gu Xiang Kai.
Gu Xiang Kai was eating a large piece of salmon sashimi. Hearing Nan Yue speak so seriously, he raised an eyebrow, put down his chopsticks, and crossed his arms.
"Boss, did you forget? My fists are very hard."
Nan Yue was momentarily stunned by Gu Xiang Kai's sudden use of the word boss, not quite understanding his meaning for a second.
Gu Xiang Kai chuckled. "Don't forget, we only came together because we each have our own life-saving abilities."
"Trust your companions."
Gu Xiang Kai had noticed that although Nan Yue looked young and had just come out of the training academy, she had that trait common to top-tier experts: an instinctive sense of responsibility to look after others.
He liked a leader like that; who would want a companion who might stab them in the back at any moment?
But he, Gu Xiang Kai, wasn't some amateur who needed constant worrying. Life and death were determined by fate. If he died, it was because of his own lack of skill, and no one else needed to be responsible for him.
Nan Yue blinked and thought about it seriously, realizing her mindset might indeed be a bit too aggressive.
She had never had companions before. Before entering the missions, she wasn't sure when the things inside her would kill her, so she never dared to make friends.
Later, after completing a few missions and finding ways to balance those things, she slowly opened up and gained teammates and partners.
Inevitably, she developed a desire to protect them and keep them safely by her side.
But Gu Xiang Kai was right; they were also powerhouses among scavengers, otherwise she wouldn't have sought them out as teammates.
Excessive worry at a time like this was a lack of trust and respect for her companions.
"I'm sorry."
Looking at the top of Nan Yue's lowered, fluffy head, Gu Xiang Kai was amused.
"Why so serious? We're the ones who should thank you for wanting to protect us."
Gu Xiang Kai continued eating his salmon. "I'll stay in this position for now. After all, if the rank is too high, it's inconvenient to handle certain miscellaneous matters."
As Nan Yue was about to leave, Gu Xiang Kai added, "You be careful too."
...
When Nan Yue arrived at Sister Lian's office at ten, her heart was calm.
She hadn't violated any rules; she didn't believe anything would happen to her.
Sister Lian's office was unlit. She stood before the floor-to-ceiling window and turned with a smile when she heard Nan Yue arrive.
"You are already my primary secretary at V4. You can now participate in more of the company's affairs."
Nan Yue's heart thudded. She remembered what Song Ping had said.
"High-level employees might also be able to learn about the existence of the Mobile Division."
It was truly a stroke of luck after a fruitless search.
"Tonight, I will take you to see the company's greatest secret."
Sister Lian's voice sounded like an ancient incantation in the darkness. "If there are no accidents, we will hold a formal initiation banquet for you tomorrow night, and you will become a permanent part of the company."
"You won't have to worry about being terminated."
Nan Yue remained silent for a moment before asking, "Was it the same for Linda?"
Sister Lian laughed. "Her? Her ability wasn't enough. Although she reached V4, her initiation banquet was never held. That's why she was so desperate and saw everyone as a rival."
Sister Lian's gaze shifted to Nan Yue, filled with appreciation. "But you are different. I can feel it. I won't find anyone more excellent than you."
"You are willing to work, yet you aren't obsessed with power struggles. At least for me, that is very important."
Nan Yue secretly complained in her heart. That's because I never intended to work for your company long-term...
A sudden chill swept through the air. Even Nan Yue hadn't noticed when someone had entered.
But the reality was that four people had appeared in the room, wearing identical suit uniforms and featureless white masks without any openings.
"They are from the Mobile Division, responsible for the company's greatest operational secret."
"Go with them. I will wait for you here."
The strings of Nan Yue's heart tightened. She didn't miss the condition in Sister Lian's words.
"If there are no accidents."
Which meant there could be.
She took a deep breath, refusing to be intimidated by the sudden appearance of the Mobile Division. She nodded to Sister Lian and followed them out.
Along the way, the four masked figures were incredibly quiet, as if they didn't exist, yet they kept Nan Yue surrounded.
Nan Yue had a strong intuition that they were the ones who hadn't appeared in the surveillance footage.
Looking at the featureless white masks on their faces, it wasn't hard to explain the woman's frantic scratching or the behavior of the three who acted as if they couldn't see.
Only... was Bi Danyuan, who had been transferred, still alive?
