“That’s a real pity. But young man, you look a bit familiar.”
Wang Gen narrowed his eyes. Too much had happened lately, and his head was still a bit foggy.
Yin Yang smiled and pointed to the wall beside him.
“You certainly are a busy man with a short memory, Chief.”
Wang Gen looked where he was pointing and saw a ‘Good Citizen Award’ hanging on the wall, thoughtfully framed.
He immediately connected him to the person who had delivered flowers to the Security Bureau.
Back then, he had suspected the kid was a transcendent, but the tests showed he was an ordinary person.
‘Wait, something’s not right!’
‘My memory hasn’t deteriorated that much. How could I have almost forgotten him?’
‘There’s definitely something off about him!’
Wang Gen’s expression turned serious again, but before he could say anything, Wang Nan grabbed his hand.
No one knew a father better than his daughter. Just by the change in his expression, she knew he was going to keep prying.
That wouldn’t do. If he made the boss angry, how could she ever come back to the flower shop?
“Dad, aren’t you usually busy? How did you find the time to come see me today?”
Wang Nan took the initiative to change the subject.
“Nonsense! No matter how busy I am, I can’t just ignore my own daughter!”
Wang Gen took a step forward as he spoke.
“Kid, are you really not considering joining the Security Bureau?”
“We’ve had a bit of a situation recently and we’re short-staffed. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be this easy to get in.”
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
Yin Yang shook his head.
“I prefer a more stable life. Being a security officer is too dangerous.”
“How is it dangerous? If you go, you’ll just be a clerk.”
“If I remember correctly, the ones you’re missing are the clerks, right?”
This sentence nearly choked Wang Gen. It was true—when the Security Bureau building was bombed, most of the casualties were indeed the clerks.
Normally, Wang Gen would have lost his temper.
But with his daughter right there, he had to maintain his image. He gave a strained smile.
“Heh, yeah.”
“Nannan, when are you going back to work?”
Wang Nan’s face fell at the question.
“Dad, I don’t want to go back.”
“Everyone is saying our department is a place that treats human life like grass. People look at me strangely wherever I go.”
Seeing her like this broke Wang Gen’s heart. He immediately comforted her.
“Fine, fine, then just quit. Our family doesn’t lack for food or drink anyway. If you don’t want to work, don’t work. Dad will support you for the rest of your life.”
“Oh, Dad!”
Wang Nan acted coy, but her eyes were secretly stealing glances at Yin Yang. She wondered if what he said about skipping thirty years of hard work was actually true.
Noticing the change in his daughter’s expression, Wang Gen grabbed her arm.
“Nannan, let’s go. Your mom made fish for you today. Isn’t that your favorite?”
“Dad, it’s not even eight o’clock yet. Who eats fish first thing in the morning? Besides, I just had breakfast.”
“What’s there to be afraid of? If you like it, we’ll have fish for afternoon tea too. Let’s go, let’s go.”
Ignoring his daughter’s protests, he forced her away from the flower shop.
Throughout the entire exchange, Yin Yang had been feeding the cat, never once looking in their direction.
Wang Nan, noticing this, felt a bit disappointed. She thought to herself that this man really was something—he didn’t even give a hint about whether he wanted to take the easy way out or not.
As soon as they got into the car, Wang Gen’s expression became incredibly grave.
“Nannan, you can’t come here anymore.”
“Huh? Why, Dad? I was even thinking of working here.”
“Nannan, I’ve seen this man before. There’s something wrong with him!”
“What’s wrong?”
“I don’t know the specifics yet, but there’s definitely something!”
Wang Gen’s expression was very stern.
“Don’t you know what your father does? My eyes are like a ruler!”
“Even if an ordinary person passed me by years ago, I could recognize them the next time we met.”
“But him?”
“I’ve talked to him, communicated with him, and yet it’s only been a few days and I’ve almost forgotten him. It’s not right. It’s definitely not right!”
Although Wang Nan was still a bit unconvinced, she knew her father’s strength. She obediently nodded.
“I understand.”
...
By noon, Yin Yang had only sold three bouquets.
He barely made enough to cover the utilities and the cat food.
At that moment, he was sitting in front of a drawing board, a pencil in hand, rapidly sketching the outline of an altar.
There were many types of altars—for the heavens, the earth, the sun, the moon, the stars, the ancestors, and so on. Each required a different design.
Yin Yang’s sacrifice was even more absurd: he was sacrificing to himself!
Therefore, he needed to design a unique altar, ideally one that could be upgraded later so he wouldn’t need to replace it for a while.
The ghost of Night-Stalker stood to the side, staring at Yin Yang with eyes full of pure venom.
“Don’t look at me like that. I’m doing this for your own good.”
“Think about it. Going to hell all by yourself would be so lonely. This is much better—now your friends can stay by your side.”
Hearing this, Night-Stalker looked back and saw three other souls behind him: Ghost Tiger, Tuoba, and the first Demigod he had killed.
For some reason, it suddenly felt that Yin Yang’s words actually made a bit of sense.
Yin Yang continued to conceptualize the altar, not even turning his head as he spoke.
“And you don’t need to worry about anything. I have a deep understanding of souls. Given your current spiritual state, you’ll naturally dissipate in a year or two anyway.”
The ghosts were all stunned.
The expression of deep-seated hatred on Night-Stalker’s face froze.
Compared to existence, nothing else mattered.
Yin Yang looked at the blueprint in his hand and nodded with satisfaction.
“Cheap goods aren’t good, and good goods aren’t cheap.”
“To build this altar, there are still a lot of things I need to buy.”
Yin Yang sighed. Why did it feel like money was never enough?
He tucked the blueprint away before looking at Night-Stalker.
“Have you thought it through? Where is the proof of your identity?”
Night-Stalker sneered, his expression saying: I’m already dead, what more can you do to me?
Seeing this, Yin Yang shook his head.
“To be honest, this is the first time I’ve dealt with the soul of a Demigod.”
“I never imagined your souls would be so weak.”
As Yin Yang spoke, the darkness behind him boiled, and the figure of the blade-wielding ghost stepped out.
Without a single word of nonsense, it struck, severing the arm of Night-Stalker’s ghost with a single blow.
Night-Stalker’s mouth opened in a silent wail. Yin Yang’s gaze gradually grew cold.
“Do you think that because you’re dead, I have no way to deal with you?”
“Quite the opposite. When you were alive, you were a Demigod.”
“Now that you’re dead, you’re just my toy.”
The blade-wielding ghost’s blade spun, causing such pain that Night-Stalker’s spirit form nearly collapsed.
“You’d better cooperate. You’re already dead, so don’t try to play the tough guy. Don’t you agree?”
Yin Yang’s smile was quite sunny, but in the eyes of these ghosts, it was more terrifying than a demon’s.
