Chapter 289 · Volume 1

Great Wei Needs Me

“Not many people enjoy reading philosophy these days.”
Yin Yang gave a polite smile.
“I mainly just like Mr. Wan Tianqing's books. I try to read everything he's written.”
The librarian nodded.
“Mr. Wan Tianqing is indeed very impressive. Oh? Aren't you from Central City? Mr. Wan is the president of Central City University, isn't he? Have you ever met him in person?”
Yin Yang shook his head and let out a sigh.
“I never had the chance.”
“Don't worry, you're both in Central City. I'm sure there will be an opportunity in the future.”
“Since you like Mr. Wan's books, you can check the third shelf to the right of the entrance. There are a few there; see if there are any you haven't read yet.”
“Thank you.”
“Haha, you're very welcome.”
After the librarian left, Yin Yang continued flipping through the philosophy book in his hand, suddenly thinking the librarian had a point.
If he had the chance to go to Central City in the future, he really should visit Central City University. Who knows, he might even run into Wan Tianqing.
Just as his mind began to wander, a sudden commotion erupted outside.
Yin Yang listened intently for a moment, then decisively returned the book and walked out of the library.
As soon as he stepped outside, he heard someone shouting.
“This is an outrage! An absolute outrage!”
“Go to war!!!”
“Go to war!!!”
The students were filled with righteous indignation.
No matter the era, the ones with the most passion—and the ones most willing to act on it—were always this demographic.
“Sneak attacks and massacring innocent civilians? Is this how a great power behaves?”
“Blood for blood!”
“Blood for blood!!!”
The students' voices grew louder. Through the snippets of conversation he overheard, Yin Yang finally understood what had happened.
Last night, Great Qi had raided the border.
They hadn't just killed a dozen Great Wei soldiers; they had completely slaughtered a village.
Over four hundred people in the entire village—not a single soul left alive.
It wasn't discovered until this morning.
Yin Yang looked at the furious students around him. He knew the two countries were likely on the verge of war, but this incident alone clearly wasn't enough to trigger it.
Furthermore, Yin Yang maintained a certain level of skepticism regarding this news.
After all, Great Wei had begun setting up its defenses months ago. How could the enemy have penetrated so easily to massacre a village?
If they had been bombarded by long-range thermal weapons, Yin Yang could understand, but this was a slaughter.
It would be more convincing to say a cult did it rather than Great Qi.
However, the timing was too perfect—so perfect that anything happening in this period could be blamed on Great Qi.
The news spread quickly through both countries.
Great Wei was incensed, with people everywhere calling for war.
The citizens of Great Qi claimed it was a frame-up and were equally vocal about going to war!
Propaganda was everywhere—on television and all over the internet.
Anyone with even a modicum of sense knew that war between the two nations was absolutely unavoidable now.
At this stage, even if the rulers of both sides didn't want to fight, their subordinates wouldn't agree to it.
After all, they were all waiting for war to accelerate their growth and break through their Sequences!
A few more days passed, and the school posted a notice on the bulletin board.
To put it simply, doctors were needed on the battlefield. The vice-principal would be leading a group of teachers to provide support at the front lines.
Any students who wanted to go along could now submit an application.
As soon as the notice was posted, the school received countless applications.
Just as Yin Yang had said before, the people who were passionate and willing to act on that passion had always been this group.
A few more days passed in this manner.
“Therefore, at this time, the first thing we must do is help the patient stabi—”
Knock, knock, knock.
A knock at the door interrupted the teacher's lecture. The teacher didn't get angry; it was as if he had known this was coming.
The classroom door was pushed open, and the school director walked in with two soldiers.
“Sorry to interrupt your class, Teacher Li.”
Teacher Li made a welcoming gesture and then silently stepped back.
The soldiers stood as straight as spears. One walked up to the podium and scanned the students before taking a small notebook from his pocket.
“Over the past two days, we have reviewed many of your applications and felt your sincere patriotism.”
“We are here today to see you in person.”
Hearing this, some students below were excited, while others were nervous.
“Wang Lu!”
“Present!”
A male student stood up, his expression full of excitement.
The soldier nodded to him and continued the roll call.
“Kong Xu!”
“Present!”
“Wang Jieyuan!”
“Present!”
One by one, the students stood up, their expressions varying.
“Zheng Yang!”
“Present!”
Yin Yang also stood up, his tone neither humble nor arrogant.
As he rose, the classroom suddenly became a bit noisy.
It seemed no one had expected that he actually intended to go to the battlefield!
The soldier acted as if he hadn't heard anything and continued calling names.
In the end, a total of twelve people were standing in the classroom.
These twelve individuals had different expressions—some were nervous, some were excited, and some were even fearful.
The officer scanned them and then looked down at his notebook.
“Zheng Yang.”
“Present.”
“Go back now and pack your things. Say your goodbyes to your family. Be at the school gate by seven-thirty tomorrow morning.”
“There will be several buses at the gate. Board the one with the license plate ending in 001. Is that clear?”
“Clear!”
“Good.”
The soldier looked back down at his notebook and then at the other students still standing.
“Kong Xu.”
“Present!”
“You pack your things as well. Be at the school gate by seven-thirty tomorrow morning and board the bus ending in 073.”
“Yes, sir!”
“Wang Lu.”
“Present!”
“You're on bus 037.”
“Yes, sir!”
“As for the rest of you, we are glad you volunteered so enthusiastically, but there were too many applicants this time. You'll have to wait for the next round.”
The two soldiers walked out after finishing. The director gave the teacher an apologetic smile.
“Please continue with your class.”
After they left, the remaining students who had stood up looked at each other.
The expressions on their faces were complicated.
Some were indignant, while others were secretly relieved.
And then there were those who were faking their indignation.
“Zheng Yang, you and the others should go home and pack your bags first.”
The teacher's expression was complex as he looked at Zheng Yang, as were those of some of his classmates.
“Yes. Thank you, teacher.”
Yin Yang took his notes and walked out of the classroom. Kong Xu and Wang Lu hurriedly followed him.
“Zheng Yang, you really plan on going to the battlefield?”
“Of course. Didn't I say so when I first transferred here?”
“Hah, back then I thought you were just saying it in passing.”
“What about you? Why do you want to go to the battlefield?”
Yin Yang looked at Kong Xu, who smiled and scratched his head.
“Why else? For the credentials. For a poor student like me with no background, if I don't risk my life, it'll be too hard to ever get ahead.”
Yin Yang then looked at Wang Lu, only to see him shrug.
“Because Great Wei needs me!”
