Chapter 284 · Volume 1

Preparing for Promotion

“Exactly. Just like that sealed object he obtained before—wherever a deed is done, a trace is left!”
“Besides, didn't the Lyu family obtain a sealed object from his sworn brother earlier? I suspect there’s a high probability that object is currently with the masked man!”
“Correct!”
The voice of a youth rang out once more.
“When the Idealist Society attacked the mountain, it gave that masked man the perfect opportunity.”
“Coupled with his bizarre ability to control sealed objects, it’s highly likely he has it!”
“We can follow the trail of that sealed object to find him!”
As soon as those words fell, the woman's voice spoke again.
“Find him? How? Don’t forget, there is a power within the masked man that cannot be probed!”
“Try to find him with a transcendent item, and the item backfires!”
“Try to find him with a sealed object, and the sealed object blacklists you!”
Silence filled the room for a few seconds after the woman finished. Then, the leader's natural voice spoke again.
“Don’t you think this untraceable power feels a bit familiar?”
The surroundings fell silent again. After a few more seconds, the raspy voice of the old man sounded.
“You mean… divine authority?”
“Precisely!”
“I suspect he isn't a transcendent at all, but a divine avatar in the mortal realm. That would explain everything.”
“That makes sense, but we can't rule out the possibility that he is a high Sequence.”
“No, that’s unlikely. If he were a high Sequence, he would be much more reckless in his actions.”
“But he’s keeping a very low profile. Given the total population of Great Wei, we would hardly have noticed him if we hadn't been investigating specifically.”
“If it is a divine avatar, there are only a few gods capable of beguiling sealed objects. Our investigation just became much more focused.”
“Agreed. Let's proceed in that direction!”
...
Huangshan City.
Yin Yang washed his raincoat clean and folded it carefully.
“It really is surprising. Only that many people were left?”
“A pity. Such a massive family estate with no one to inherit it—it won't be long before it’s picked clean by others.”
“Meow~”
Canned Food let out a meow at Yin Yang, urging him to hurry up.
“I know, I know. I’m ready.”
Yin Yang changed into casual clothes and headed out with the cat bag on his back.
“Spirituality is still increasing a bit slowly. It’s a shame the second shadow wasn't like the first one, or I would have broken through by now.”
“But it doesn't matter. At this rate, it won't take much longer.”
“First, let's find a convenient place for me to hold the promotion ritual, then we’ll head to Huangyi City.”
“Meow?”
“To go to school.”
“Meow?”
“Yeah, to study medicine and then become a military doctor.”
Yin Yang rode a newly purchased bicycle, humming a little tune as he headed out of the city.
“But before we go to Huangyi City, we need a quiet place. Fortunately, I know just the spot.”
...
An unnamed barren mountain.
“I curse you! I curse you to sink into eternal damnation for all eternity!”
Thwack!
The blade-wielding ghost stepped forward and decapitated the speaker with a single stroke.
Blood sprayed from the headless corpse. The lantern-carrying ghost raised its right hand, and the blood hovered in the air, converging into its palm.
Once the corpse was drained of blood, the Headless Ghost stepped forward, grabbed the body, and tossed it onto the altar in the center of the clearing, where a small corpse mountain of dozens of bodies had been piled up.
Yin Yang held a severed head in his hand, using its hair like a brush dipped in blood to draw patterns around the altar.
Even a cultist would have called him ‘Big Brother’ upon seeing this scene.
Unfortunately, these cultists had already been drained of their blood and stacked into a corpse mountain.
Indeed, this had originally been a cultist site.
They had hollowed out this barren mountain to hold various rituals inside.
After Yin Yang found out about it, he planned to take a look. To his surprise, the people here were extremely ‘hospitable’ and ‘enthusiastic,’ insisting that he come inside and sit for a while.
And then, they very ‘enthusiastically’ offered up their lives.
As everyone knew, Yin Yang was a very frugal person.
Since they had offered their lives, he couldn't bear to let them go to waste, so he arranged this corpse mountain to hold his promotion ritual.
“That should do it.”
Yin Yang beckoned to the lantern-carrying ghost, and a moment later, a heavy head sat in his palm.
The head was mutated beyond recognition, covered in white patterns that looked like they might shatter at any moment.
Buzz—
As soon as the head touched the air, the white marks on it began to glow faintly.
Almost simultaneously, the array Yin Yang had laid out around the altar began to glow, absorbing and transferring this white light into the corpse mountain.
Boom!
The corpse mountain on the altar began to burn. The bodies twitched as they incinerated, creating an exceptionally macabre scene.
Yin Yang placed the head, now purged of the white light, into a groove on the altar.
“Tsk tsk tsk, the size and length are just right.”
Yin Yang was very satisfied with this. He then sat cross-legged to the side, watching the corpse mountain burn bit by bit.
The three ghosts gathered around as well, as if they were warming themselves by a fire. Only the red-haired ghost was absent, patrolling the perimeter on high alert.
“It should be in the next couple of days. Finally reaching Sequence 6.”
Yin Yang’s tone carried a hint of regret, as if he were disappointed that his promotion speed was too slow.
If other transcendents heard this, they would likely be unable to resist cursing him.
One must remember that Mr. Mei was considered a genius for reaching Sequence 7 at thirty—the kind of talent sent down from a big city to gain experience.
The vast majority of transcendents might remain at Sequence 9 or Sequence 8 for their entire lives.
Yet Yin Yang was already becoming a Sequence 6 in his twenties and still felt it was slow. How were others supposed to live with themselves?
“Once I break through to Sequence 6, I’ll at least have some power to protect myself.”
“I hope everything is in time.”
The corpse mountain burned brighter and brighter, and translucent mists began to drift into the surroundings.
Flames were clearly burning on top, yet the area grew colder and colder, as if the corpse mountain were absorbing the surrounding heat.
Yin Yang activated his Spirit Sight and saw vague figures appearing one after another.
This was a cultist site; the number of people who had died here was countless, and now they were manifesting.
The translucent mist drifted out of the mountain cave, becoming even more ethereal.
“Not enough, still not enough.”
Yin Yang murmured softly. The light of the array around the altar grew even more brilliant, and the flames on the corpse mountain roared.
By nightfall, the entire cave was packed with dense crowds of ghostly figures.
The mountain forest was completely shrouded in mist.
Ripples occasionally disturbed the mist, and figures could be seen struggling within.
The mist and figures only began to fade when the sun rose the next morning.
The corpse mountain was still burning, though the bodies within had become significantly ‘thinner.’
On the second night, after the sun went down, the mist and figures completely enveloped the entire mountain.
Buzz—
At that moment, Yin Yang’s spirituality reached full capacity!
