The man in the passenger seat tried to flee, but as soon as he stood up, his feet flew off his legs.
The blade-wielding ghost was like a cat that had caught a mouse, in no hurry to devour its prey, preferring to toy with and torment it first.
For a time, nothing but agonized screams filled the air.
The blood gushing from them was washed away by the rain, vanishing without a trace in an instant.
The rain grew heavier. The two men lay in the water, wailing like drowning dogs on the brink of death.
“War God protect me! War God protect me!”
The driver shouted repeatedly, as if trying to use his faith to dispel his terror.
Yin Yang chuckled.
“Begging the gods only when death is at your doorstep?”
“Do you need me to help you with a sacrifice?”
Yin Yang snapped his fingers with his right hand. The blood flowing from the two men began to converge and solidify, eventually forming two little dolls that crawled toward their wounds.
“AAAHHH!!!”
The two blood dolls pried open their wounds and forced their way inside.
The intense pain was even greater than that of the Death by a Thousand Cuts.
“Urgh!”
The man from the passenger seat began to vomit from a combination of terror and agonizing pain.
For the first time in his life, he felt how truly close death was!
In this moment, he finally seemed to understand those people who had cried and begged them for mercy in the past.
Yin Yang kept his Perception skill active, clearly feeling their current emotions.
He even felt a memory—a fragment of memory from the baleful aura behind him.
In the memory, a woman was kidnapped and had gone through immense hardship to escape.
She saw a Security Bureau vehicle at an intersection. In that moment, it was as if she had seen a literal lifesaver, and she ran toward it with everything she had.
She told the two security officers in the car everything that had happened. Just when she thought she was finally safe, a sharp pain struck the back of her head, and she lost consciousness.
When she woke up again, she saw those two ‘saviors’ counting money while speaking.
“Keep a close eye on her. If anyone else finds out, this amount of money won’t be enough to settle it.”
“Don’t worry, the buyer is already prepared. We’ll take her there in a bit.”
The woman had just heard this when she felt a stinging pain in her arm. Turning her head, she saw a doctor in a white lab coat giving her an injection.
The memory ended there; she was dead.
Yin Yang’s emotions began to fluctuate.
Ever since he felt his 【liver】 last time, his temper had become much more volatile.
Sensing Yin Yang’s mood, the headless ghost’s hand began to exert pressure.
“AAAHHH!!!”
The driver’s head was squeezed until it began to deform, yet he still didn’t die.
The headless ghost knew that Yin Yang didn’t want these human traffickers to die so easily.
Seeing this, the blade-wielding ghost’s hands moved even faster.
Ten minutes later, the two men could no longer scream.
They had been sliced into near-skeletons by the blade-wielding ghost, yet they remained alive.
The look in their eyes had shifted from terror and malice to a desperate longing.
Yin Yang knew they were begging for death.
“Sigh, I really am too soft-hearted. Fine, let me release your souls from the agony of the flesh.”
The two were overjoyed to hear this, thinking their suffering was finally coming to an end.
Pfft!
The blade-wielding ghost decapitated them with a single stroke. Their two heads flew into the air, but instead of falling to the ground, they landed upon an altar.
The materials on the altar began to melt, coiling around the two heads like black oil.
Meanwhile, their Yin souls slowly drifted toward Yin Yang.
The corners of Yin Yang’s mouth curled up.
Perfect. He still had many questions to ask them.
...
“The rain’s stopped! Back to work, back to work!”
“Right, right! Let’s rebuild our home as soon as possible!”
As the skies cleared, the workers resumed their tasks.
A few children chased each other playfully. Nie Pi had already finished cleaning the tent, clutching Yin Yang’s notebook tightly the entire time.
He had personally seen Yin Yang writing in it, even turning to a fresh page when human traffickers were mentioned.
Needless to say, this notebook was definitely important.
“Nie Pi!”
“Hey!”
Zheng Guang’s voice called out from outside the tent.
Nie Pi looked at the notebook. He worried that if Zheng Guang saw it and tried to take it, his crippled leg wouldn't let him give chase.
Thinking of this, he carefully hid the notebook under Yin Yang’s luggage.
He didn’t think he was overreacting; rather, he felt it was better to be safe than sorry.
“What are you doing?”
“Coming!”
Nie Pi answered and stepped out of the tent, seeing Zheng Guang standing there with a man and a woman.
Seeing strangers, Nie Pi immediately grew nervous.
“They’re here to collect data for the census.”
“I noticed there’s something wrong with your leg. This is a good chance to apply for some subsidies for you.”
Just as Nie Pi was wondering how to brush them off, Yin Yang walked over from nearby.
“Data collection? That’s good.”
“However, my younger brother’s leg isn’t permanently disabled. He was just injured and has been recovering.”
Though Nie Pi didn’t know what Yin Yang was planning, he nodded in agreement.
“Is that so?”
Zheng Guang looked a bit embarrassed. He had originally wanted to help Nie Pi get more subsidies, but it seemed he had misunderstood.
He said apologetically, “Nie Pi, don’t take it the wrong way. I didn’t mean anything by it.”
Nie Pi smiled. “I know you were looking out for me.”
Zheng Guang nodded repeatedly, signaling that was indeed his intention.
Yin Yang let out a sigh. “It’s just that the earthquake happened so suddenly. Neither my brother nor I have our ID documents; they’re lost now.”
“But I’m fairly well-known in the North District. My name is Dong Yang, and I run a pest control company. You can verify this with my neighbors.”
The two registrars nodded and then looked at Nie Pi.
“What is your brother’s name?”
“Nie Pi.”
“Hmm? He doesn’t share your surname?”
“He’s my cousin.”
“Oh.”
The registrars acknowledged this, asked for their former addresses and ages, and then turned to leave.
Zheng Guang winked at Yin Yang. “I’ll head out now. I have to help them with the others. Come over for dinner tonight.”
“Not tonight. I have plans.”
“Got it.”
Zheng Guang waved and led the two toward the other tents.
Yin Yang then looked at Nie Pi. “Offer a sacrifice to the Lord of Rebirth and Communion for your leg injury. Be sincere.”
“Huh?”
“Do as I say.”
“Okay.”
Though Nie Pi felt it was unlikely to work, he did as his big brother told him. After all, there was nothing to lose.
As he prayed, he felt a sour, itchy sensation in his crippled leg, as if countless ants were crawling over it.
Yet he gritted his teeth and endured it.
“Alright, stop clenching your teeth, or you’ll have to sacrifice them next.”
“What?”
Nie Pi opened his eyes. Yin Yang pointed at his leg.
“Try walking a few laps.”
Nie Pi instinctively moved forward, his gait still somewhat limping.
After all, he had walked this way for a long time; it was hard to adapt all at once.
“Let go and walk! Walk boldly!”
Encouraged by Yin Yang, Nie Pi walked faster and faster, eventually breaking into a run through the camp.
The skies had cleared after the rain, much like his current state of mind.
