“The young lady’s safety is paramount!”
“If Lord Mei wishes to seek reinforcements, he should contact Wangduan City and have them report the situation upward.”
The voice from within the mist was cold and heartless, but Lord Mei refused to give up.
“Their ritual is not yet complete. This is the perfect time to disrupt it.”
“If we delay any longer, even this mist might not be enough to protect the young lady!”
Silence followed his words for a moment before the voice within the mist spoke again.
“Lord Mei, you should still...”
Before the speaker could finish, a whistling sound cut through the air. A streak of red light, trailing a long tail like a crimson meteor, slammed down from the horizon!
The mist suddenly contracted, leaving Lord Mei exposed outside its barrier.
It was then that Lord Mei realized the blood and internal organs on the ground had formed a massive ritual array!
At the center of the array, a mountain of corpses—eviscerated and hollowed out—stood piled high.
“My Lord! Leave now!”
Zhou Yu’s voice thundered in Lord Mei’s ear.
Rumble!
The blood-red meteor crashed into the mountain of corpses. The impact instantly pulverized several bodies into a bloody mist.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
Bone fragments shot out like bullets. Zhou Yu rushed to shield Lord Mei, the golden-armored phantom reappearing behind him. He swung his long blade repeatedly, batting away the flying shards.
The Ward Guards and Executioners were not so fortunate; three or four were killed on the spot.
Thump-thump.
Thump-thump.
The drumming started again.
With every beat, the mountain of corpses contracted like a beating heart.
No, it was the 'meteor' inside the mountain of corpses that was contracting.
“The Holy Son is born! Sacrifice!!!”
Thump-thump-thump!
Thump-thump-thump!
Following the woman’s voice from the sky, the drumming grew more frantic.
The bloody tentacles lashed out with increasing violence. Some even began to snap under the strain, yet they did not stop for a single second.
As they drummed, the mountain of corpses contracted faster and faster, looking as if it would explode at any moment.
“Yin Yang, we...”
Xiao Zhe was silenced by Yin Yang’s hand before he could finish.
Thanks to Yin Yang’s treatment, Xiao Zhe was in much better condition. Although he still couldn't move on his own, he was at least no longer in immediate danger of dying.
Yin Yang held his hand over Xiao Zhe's mouth and whispered in a barely audible voice.
“Don’t speak. Try to breathe only through your nose.”
“As long as we stay under the umbrella, we won’t be discovered.”
Xiao Zhe looked at Yin Yang with a bizarre expression, wondering if the boy had been frightened out of his wits.
An umbrella?
What umbrella?
He couldn't see the lantern-carrying ghost, so naturally, he couldn't see its massive umbrella either.
The blade-wielding ghost stood guard in front of Yin Yang, its eyes fixed warily on the mountain of corpses.
Thanks to his unique Sequence, Yin Yang, the 'Sacrifice,' was blended in among the other sacrifices and went unnoticed.
Although he had already broken through to Sequence 8 and become a Corpse Celebrant, it didn't mean he couldn't use his Sequence 9 abilities.
On the contrary, his promotion had actually strengthened his abilities as a Sacrifice!
‘What a massive undertaking. I can only recognize less than a third of this array. I simply haven't had access to enough books on the transcendent.’
‘That meteor that flew down from the sky... that must be the Holy Son they were talking about.’
‘What exactly are they trying to do?’
‘In this situation, how am I supposed to protect Xiao Zhe?’
Yin Yang frowned. The gap in power was too great, and with Xiao Zhe severely injured, it would be incredibly difficult to lead him away safely.
Thump-thump-thump!
The drumbeats merged into a continuous drone. The mountain of corpses exploded, and a pungent, nauseating stench of blood filled the air!
The flowers and trees on Jiuqing Mountain began to wither and rot the instant they touched the bloody mist.
Zhou Yu protected Lord Mei as they retreated rapidly. As he had said before, outsiders could not be relied upon in a crisis like this!
The remaining guards followed suit, trailing behind the two.
As the bloody mist dispersed, a small, thin figure of a child crawled out from the remains of the corpse mountain.
The figure was less than a meter tall, its skin a bruised purple. Its head and belly were disproportionately large, while its limbs and neck were as thin as matchsticks.
“Hungry... hungry...”
The child opened its mouth, revealing three rows of sharp, shark-like teeth!
“Hungry... hungry...”
It repeated itself. Seeing that no one was paying attention to it, it simply lowered its head and began devouring the surrounding corpses.
Despite its spindly limbs, its strength was immense. It easily hoisted a corpse twice its size and began to feast greedily.
“Hungry... hungry...”
Perhaps unsatisfied with the flavor, it tossed the corpse aside after a few bites. Its large eyes scanned the surroundings before landing on the fleeing crowd.
“Hungry... hungry...”
It was still standing where it had been when it said the first 'hungry,' but by the second, it was already behind Zhou Yu.
Fast.
It was too fast!
It was as if it had teleported.
Zhou Yu felt a foul wind approaching. Without a second thought, he drew his waist saber and swung it backward in a desperate arc.
Clang!!!
He felt as if he had struck a mountain of iron. The recoil split the webbing between his thumb and forefinger.
“Take the Lord and go!!!”
Zhou Yu roared as the golden-armored phantom behind him unleashed a flurry of blade light.
“Hungry... hungry...”
Crunch!
The big-headed infant snapped Zhou Yu’s blade with its first bite and bit off the phantom’s head with the second.
The backlash caused Zhou Yu to cough up a mouthful of blood.
But before the blood could even hit the ground, the big-headed infant flew behind Zhou Yu and bit through his neck.
Blood sprayed everywhere as the infant sucked greedily. A look of satisfaction appeared on its purple face.
Zhou Yu wrapped his arms tightly around the infant, using the last of his strength to pull it away from the direction Lord Mei was running.
He could die, but he would not let Lord Mei die with him.
This was the pride of the Imperial Guard!
Boom!
Flames erupted from Zhou Yu’s body, but they failed to harm the infant in the slightest.
Lord Mei ran with all his might. Though he was a Scholar, he exercised regularly, and with the enhancement of his transcendent power, he was much faster than an average person.
When he saw the flames behind him, tears flowed uncontrollably down his face.
He knew that his most loyal guard was never coming back.
Puff!
His vision blurred by tears, Lord Mei tripped over a mangled torso.
In that split second of delay, the big-headed infant appeared before him.
The infant’s skin was purple, its eyes blood-red, and bits of flesh still hung from its teeth.
Its slightly sunken nose twitched repeatedly, as if sniffing Lord Mei’s scent.
“The Master does not speak of strange powers and chaotic spirits!”
Lord Mei roared. The infant hissed and leaped backward like a startled cat, its eyes filled with suspicion and uncertainty.
“Giggle, giggle...”
A flirtatious laugh rang out, and the Sequence 6 dancer descended from the sky. She approached Lord Mei with a beaming smile.
The woman was stunningly beautiful, her posture graceful, every movement and smile exuding an irresistible charm.
“People say that scholars are useless, but I don’t think that’s necessarily true. At the very least, you have quite a loud voice.”
She covered her mouth and giggled, her ample curves drawing the eye.
Lord Mei clenched his fists so hard his nails drew blood from his palms.
“Enchantress, do you really think you can leave Jiuqing Mountain alive today?”
