Chapter 11 · Volume 1

The Despairing Elven Girl

The image displayed on the light screen was indeed the scene of everyone whispering to one another after he had left.
If anyone were to ask what this light screen was, Xia De could only express his bitter sorrow—talking about it brought nothing but tears!
Because high-level quests were incredibly rare in this region, he was constantly out completing missions, which had caused him to miss out on those scarce high-level quests several times.
After missing out twice, his heart ached so much he could barely breathe. If he had managed to accept those two quests, he would have already promoted to a C-rank adventurer. Thus, he had created a minor spell.
This spell allowed him to monitor certain people or events. After accepting a quest, he would leave a spell behind to monitor the adventurer's hall for any new postings.
However, its function was purely like a surveillance camera—it could only record and lacked any notification feature. Therefore, the spell would dissipate after a day at most, and the recorded content would be transmitted to a magic hub Xia De had specifically designed, allowing him to review the footage.
As for why it would disappear after only a day?
Xia De's attitude was simple: they were just a bunch of low-level quests anyway, who did they think they were looking down on?
Furthermore, he specifically avoided quests that required social interaction, choosing instead to rely purely on his own strength to bulldoze through them!
Sometimes, he would return to submit a quest in less than an hour!
Deliver, collect payment, deliver, collect payment, deliver, collect payment—it was just like an assembly line.
It was dry, boring, and frequently bloody, whether it involved humans or magical beasts. An ordinary person would probably lose their mind after doing this for so long. Fortunately, he was extremely adept at managing his mental state and finding joy in his work. For instance, he would often think to himself:
“The clients only need to post the quests, but I have to consider so much more!”
“No wonder they gave me the nickname Grim Reaper. It still sounds so chuunibyou, though!”
Xia De snapped out of his thoughts, slapped his cheeks, and let out a self-deprecating laugh.
“What am I thinking about? I should focus on traveling. I didn't expect the destination for this quest to be so far away!”
He really hadn't expected the quest's location to be this distant. By his calculations, traveling there at his usual pace would take a full two days.
And now, a day had already passed.
“It seems I'll have to find a way to study teleportation magic later. In the future, I can just teleport on the spot without even needing anchor points!”
After saying this, he seemed to think of something, and his mood brightened.
Suddenly, a gust of wind blew past out of nowhere. He sensed that the wind's direction was somewhat unusual. Then, a faint sound reached his ears, sounding like the commotion of a battle.
Search!
His Perception Domain expanded!
He saw them. Amidst the dense forest, thirty kilometers away, were two powerful life energy signatures.
One of them was particularly powerful—stronger than anything he had ever sensed before—shining with a vibrant green light!
At this realization, Xia De's heart raced with anticipation. He licked his lips in excitement, and in the next second, he shot forward like an arrow released from a bow, rushing toward the source of the energy signatures at extreme speed!
Casting wind magic to lift his body and reduce drag, combined with his incredibly robust physical strength, he was like a bolt of lightning drawing a straight line across the earth.
In just a brief moment, he was only one li away. Concealing his aura and using the surrounding environment for cover, Xia De quietly approached the scene.
The true forms of the two lifeforms emitting the powerful energy signatures were soon revealed before his eyes.
One was a giant serpent several dozen meters long. Its winding, thick body would likely require more than a dozen men with two-meter arm spans to encircle it.
Its skin was like hard rock. Every time it slithered, it either sent trees flying or left a shallow trench in the ground.
What was even more peculiar was that it had five heads, each one distinct from the others. Yet they shared one common trait—even from hundreds of meters away, Xia De could smell the foul stench wafting from their maws.
【Species: Five-Headed Serpent (Temporary)
Combat Power: Tier Six, 6250 (Attack, Defense, Strength, Poison)】
What excellent nourishment!
Xia De's eyes lit up, and he praised in his heart.
He knew being an adventurer had a bright future!
Look at this, it had only been a month and he had already encountered such a powerful magical beast. The one previously hailed as the strongest here only had a Combat Power of 2,500. This serpent was equivalent to two and a half of that “strongest” beast!
However, Combat Power couldn't be compared so simply. He had discovered that every time Combat Power reached a specific threshold, there would be a watershed. Crossing that threshold meant entering an entirely new realm.
Once that realm was crossed, even a minor increase in Combat Power would make one far stronger than a prior increase of dozens or even hundreds of points. It was a qualitative leap!
Of course, that was only in comparison to others, because Xia De had discovered that he had no bottlenecks.
In other words, as long as he kept training, his stats would continue to rise indefinitely!
Next, he looked at the other lifeform shining with a highly concentrated green light in his sensory vision, and he was surprised by what he saw.
It was actually an elf. She wore brown adventurer's attire paired with a dark green forest cloak. Around her neck hung an exquisite emerald necklace. Her skin was as white as cream, and she had light blonde hair, with a few strands on the side woven into a small braid.
Currently, she was sitting weakly on the ground, protected inside a green barrier. The exquisite necklace around her neck emitted a faint green glow.
Her emerald-like eyes were filled with terror as she looked up in despair at the colossal beast repeatedly slamming against the barrier.
What surprised Xia De, however, was that the panel showed this elven girl's strength to be extremely weak, completely contrary to the immense power he had expected.
What had actually caused him to sense such a powerful life energy signature was the intense vitality radiating from the exquisite necklace around her neck.
【Species: Elf
Combat Power: Tier Three, 955 (Perception, Speed)】
【Species: Magic Tool (Defensive Type)
Combat Power: Tier Seven, 6788/8200 (Damaged)】
Am I actually this strong already?
Seeing the information about the necklace on the panel, and realizing that even its peak value wasn't as high as his own, Xia De once again marveled at his own strength.
However, the moment he recalled that there was a boss with ten million Combat Power looming over him, his smugness was instantly crushed.
His intuition told him that some sort of conspiracy had to be hidden behind that overwhelming Combat Power.
With his current Combat Power of just over nine thousand, he wasn't strong enough to survive such a conspiracy. Therefore, he still needed to work hard to grow.
The giant serpent before him would make excellent nourishment!
The giant serpent lunged greedily toward the despairing elven girl. It had a premonition that as long as it devoured this tiny creature, its strength would increase significantly.
Little did it know, it was also destined to become someone else's nourishment.
The giant serpent's attacks grew increasingly ferocious. Its massive body repeatedly crashed into the green barrier, with each impact unleashing a massive, muffled boom.
Under the giant serpent's violent battering, the green barrier creaked like an old wooden shack, on the verge of collapse.
Xia De did not step forward to play the hero and rescue the damsel in distress. He concealed his figure, completely masking his presence as he quietly watched the predatory scene unfold.
It would be a lie to say he wasn't interested in elves. After all, this was the first intelligent non-human race he had encountered in this alternate world.
However, what he needed even more was information—information about this world.
This elven girl carried such a powerful magic tool. Whether she had obtained it by chance or it had been given to her by her family, it proved that she was no ordinary person.
Knowing how to bestow a favor upon someone was a crucial skill. Xia De needed to appear at her moment of absolute despair to truly highlight his own importance.
This would also significantly raise the upper limit of the rewards he could reap afterward.
The elven girl sat weakly on the ground, her body trembling uncontrollably from sheer terror. Each time the hideous serpent struck, her heart would pound violently in sync, as if the impact were hitting her heart directly rather than the barrier.
She struggled to her feet, wanting to run backward.
But under another violent impact from the giant serpent, she tumbled back to the ground.
She desperately slapped her own legs as tears streamed down her cheeks.
All my magic tools are completely depleted. Am I going to die this time?
Father, Mother!
Her face was completely drenched in tears as she stared blankly at the five-headed colossus.
A despairing, helpless voice escaped her lips.
“Save me!”
In an instant, heaven and earth shifted dramatically. The clouds in the sky ground to a halt, and the entire world felt as if it had been paused. The light began to dim, and an invisible pressure filled the space.
Rumble!
Thunder roared as a bolt of lightning flashed across the sky. Immediately after, one of the giant serpent's heads exploded like fireworks, sending flesh and blood flying in all directions!
Boundless blood rained down, mingled with shredded chunks of flesh that emitted a heavy, metallic stench. They splattered against the elven girl's barrier.
And they fell upon a figure exuding a chilling aura, standing right in front of the girl!
