Chapter 31 · Volume 1

Brutal Training

“Using an unfamiliar move in the heat of battle is an act of sheer stupidity.”
Tina watched the miserable Letitia with a cold gaze, showing no pity whatsoever for her injuries.
Tina's words struck Letitia's mind like a hammer blow.
She and Silas were closely matched in strength. Since she had gone after Silas and Tyr, she had already witnessed the Bloodthirsty Magic Wolf cub's attack patterns, meaning she should have handled it with much more ease than Silas.
Instead, her body was now covered in wounds, and her left arm was completely crippled—all because she had tried to imitate Tyr by using an unfamiliar technique in the heat of battle.
“Next.”
Indifferent to Letitia's regret, Tina called for the next person.
Hearing Tina's voice, Letitia let out a breath, propped herself up with her sword using her still-functioning right hand, and limped toward the wooden rack holding the recovery potions.
“Sister.”
Seeing a dejected Letitia walking over, Silas hurriedly ran toward her with a recovery potion.
By now, his resentment toward Tyr had been cast to the wind, leaving only worry for his sister in his heart.
Letitia took the recovery potion from Silas without a word, heading over to sit down in a corner.
Seeing Letitia in such a despondent state, Silas did not dare to approach her.
Barry was next. Having learned from Letitia's mistake, he didn't try to copy Tyr's unfamiliar technique and instead dealt with the Bloodthirsty Magic Wolf cub in his own way.
Armed with the experience of those before him, Barry handled the Bloodthirsty Magic Wolf cub with much greater ease. Although he sustained some injuries before slaying the cub, he fared far better than the battered Silas and the heavily wounded Letitia.
Next, the reserves on the drill grounds stepped up one after another to fight the Bloodthirsty Magic Wolf cubs. Having watched the battles of Tyr and the other three, some reserves were eager to try, while others were filled with dread.
But regardless of their desires, none of them could escape having to face a Bloodthirsty Magic Wolf cub.
Tyr sat on a high platform at the edge of the drill grounds, watching the battles below.
The first few to step up did quite well. Although they couldn't handle it as easily as Barry and the others, they still fought the Bloodthirsty Magic Wolf cubs with courage.
Though they ended up in a miserable state by the end, they ultimately completed their training.
Tyr respected these individuals. One could not choose their innate talent, but whether they worked hard was entirely in their own hands.
“Brother Tyr.”
Before long, Sevira also completed her training. Both of her arms were dripping with blood, and there were several cuts on her delicate face. The clothes at her waist were torn, revealing a nasty bite wound with mangled flesh.
Fortunately, after drinking a recovery potion, her wounds began to heal rapidly.
“Sit.”
Tyr patted the spot beside him, gesturing for Sevira to sit.
The two sat side by side, continuing to watch the battles in the center of the drill grounds.
Compared to the courageous fighters who had gone first, the remaining reserves were far more cowardly.
Many didn't even dare to step forward. Only under Tina's piercing glare did they drag their heavy feet toward the iron cages, their legs and sword-wielding hands trembling uncontrollably.
Tina turned a blind eye to this. Without even asking if they were ready, she directly opened the iron cages.
“Ahhh!”
Piercing screams echoed. Lacking any courage to begin with, these reserves fell into complete panic when faced with the charge of the Bloodthirsty Magic Wolf cubs.
Some swung their iron swords wildly, some stood frozen in a daze with no idea what to do, and others simply turned tail and tried to run.
Tina did not interfere with any of their actions.
Naturally, she didn't stop the Bloodthirsty Magic Wolf cubs from chasing them down either.
Whether the cubs pounced, clawed, or bit, Tina wouldn't intervene as long as the attacks weren't lethal.
Only when a cub's attack posed a genuine threat to a reserve's life would Tina release a blast of magic power to knock the beast back.
“Hiss... That's brutal,” Sevira muttered, sucking in a cold breath at the sight of the miserable reserves below.
“Indeed, it is,” Tyr agreed, nodding.
Once the reserves being mauled by the Bloodthirsty Magic Wolf cubs completely lost their ability to fight, Tina would treat them with recovery potions.
Once healed, they would be thrown right back onto the field to continue fighting the cubs until they finally managed to kill them.
Tyr figured that going through such trauma at such a young age would likely leave them with psychological scars long after they left the Sword Prison.
Of course, that was just the perspective of an ordinary person. But this was the Sword Prison, and the people here were anything but ordinary.
Aside from Tyr and Sevira, who found the spectacle pitiful and cruel, the other reserves who had already completed their training mostly watched the misery of their peers with schadenfreude.
As the swordsmanship instructor, Tina merely watched coldly. In her eyes, allowing these failed reserves to recover and continue fighting the already exhausted cubs—rather than restoring the cubs to their peak condition as well—was already an act of extreme mercy.
If they lacked the courage to even hold a sword against a magical beast of the same realm, then if House Callis ever faced a crisis in the future, they would likely do nothing but throw down their weapons and surrender.
House Callis had no need for such spineless trash.
The rest of the training passed amidst the low growls of the Bloodthirsty Magic Wolf cubs and the agonizing screams of the reserves.
Fortunately, by the end of the afternoon swordsmanship training, everyone had managed to slay their respective Bloodthirsty Magic Wolf cubs.
Had they failed, their subsequent training would have only become even more brutal.
This was largely thanks to the robust physical foundation forged by the Sword Qi Body Tempering Technique, which allowed them to wage a war of attrition against the cubs after each recovery until they finally wore the exhausted beasts to death.
“Class dismissed.”
With the afternoon swordsmanship training over and all the Bloodthirsty Magic Wolf cubs slain, Tina made her announcement and turned to leave the drill grounds.
Upon hearing that class was dismissed, the reserves who had passed early strolled leisurely out of the drill grounds.
Throughout it all, no one spared a glance for the weeping reserves collapsed on the ground.
Tyr merely sighed at the sight of them before leaving with Sevira.
