Chapter 44 · Volume 1

First Encounter with the Beast Taming Sect

Wen Jingshu stood on her lotus magic tool, putting on an act of being caught up to by them.
“Senior Brother, it's her! The scent of the Wind-Howling Wolf is very strong on her!”
Hearing the female cultivator's words, Wen Jingshu raised an eyebrow.
She had very cautiously placed the Wind-Howling Wolf into the Yunling Bracelet and had sold it off as quickly as possible. Yet this female cultivator was actually able to locate her so precisely?
Excellent. The treasure on this woman's body had successfully caught Wen Jingshu's attention.
Qian De looked up and saw a nine-year-old female cultivator at the fifth level of the Qi Refining stage.
Nine years old? Fifth level of Qi Refining? He had originally planned to just kill whoever he found, but now he had to be cautious.
Qian De took a step forward, blocking her path, and said, “Young friend, didn't the elders in your family tell you that it's wrong to snatch other people's demon beasts?”
Wen Jingshu looked at them in surprise and said somewhat innocently, “Who are you? I don't recall snatching anything!”
The female cultivator was convinced Wen Jingshu was playing dumb. With an unfriendly look, she said, “Stop pretending! My two senior brothers and I had our eyes on that Wind-Howling Wolf for a long time. If we hadn't left for a moment to fetch Senior Brother Qian, how could you have gotten your hands on it?”
That Wind-Howling Wolf was the beast she had wanted to contract! Even if it was killed, its entire body was full of treasures. There was no reason to yield it to Wen Jingshu.
Hearing this, Wen Jingshu disagreed. “The demon beasts in Jiangyuan Valley are ownerless. If you failed to seize the opportunity to contract or kill it, that is simply your own incompetence.”
“Following your logic, I could also claim that the high-grade ninth-rank spiritual demon in Jiangyuan Valley is mine, and that I just haven't had the chance to contract it yet.”
The female cultivator stamped her feet in anger at her words. Another male cultivator, who had sharp, monkey-like features, said displeasurably:
“Sharp-tongued brat. Either you return the Wind-Howling Wolf to us right now and compensate us with another hundred top-grade spirit stones, or you let Senior Brother Qian teach you a lesson, cripple your cultivation, and take the Wind-Howling Wolf away.”
Hearing the two options he gave, Wen Jingshu could not help but roll her eyes.
He clearly wanted to kill her, yet he had the nerve to act as if he were kindly giving her options.
Qian De, who had the highest cultivation, did not say a word upon hearing the male cultivator's words, silently permitting the harassment.
Wen Jingshu directly pulled out her disciple token.
“I am Wen Jingshu, the fourth personal disciple under Daoist Lord Beili, the peak master of Hidden Star Peak of the Qingyun Sect. Are you sure you want to make things difficult for me?”
Qian De's expression shifted slightly when he saw Wen Jingshu's token.
They had suspected she had a significant background, but they never expected it to be this grand!
There was indeed no need for them to provoke a personal disciple of a main peak's Daoist Lord.
In an instant, Qian De put on a smile:
“So it's Junior Sister Wen. We are all on the same side; this is all a misunderstanding.”
“I am Qian De, an inner sect disciple under the Fourth Elder of the Beast Taming Sect. Since the Wind-Howling Wolf was obtained by you, Junior Sister, then it is a testament to your capability. Naturally, we have nothing more to say.”
“This Treasure-Hunting Mouse can serve as a small compensation from our Beast Taming Sect. I hope you won't look down on it, Junior Sister.”
The Beast Taming Sect?
Wen Jingshu also felt it was a pity.
She had originally planned to use her identity as a personal disciple of the Qingyun Sect to test their background. If they were rogue cultivators, she would have killed them directly; and even if they had some background, she wouldn't have been afraid.
As it turned out, they were actually from a first-rate sect, the Beast Taming Sect.
In that case, if she wanted to kill them, she would have to take a slightly roundabout approach.
As for this Treasure-Hunting Mouse, as the name implied, it could sense treasures. Ever since her rebirth, Wen Jingshu had been caught up in one thing after another, so she truly hadn't had the time to acquire a treasure-hunting tool.
Although this Treasure-Hunting Mouse was of a low rank and couldn't find any peerless, great treasures, it was still better than nothing.
“In that case, thank you, Senior Brother.”
Wen Jingshu took the Treasure-Hunting Mouse but was in no rush to contract it.
With the vigilance she possessed as the talisman cultivator Wen Jingshu, she knew that things delivered by others for free were usually nothing good.
Watching Wen Jingshu walk away without even looking back, the female cultivator said unwillingly:
“Senior Brother, you're just letting her leave like that? She claimed to be a disciple of Daoist Lord Beili, but how come I've never heard of Daoist Lord Beili taking another female disciple? And you even gave away a Treasure-Hunting Mouse for nothing!”
“Our Beast Taming Sect is only not among the Four Great Sects because we don't care to compete. I absolutely despise how those from the Four Great Sects put on such a high-and-mighty act just because of their background.”
“Besides, you are an inner disciple accepted by the Fourth Elder. Once you contract the Blazing Tiger, you'll become a personal disciple. Your status isn't any lower than hers, Senior Brother. There's no need to lower yourself like this.”
“She's all alone right now anyway, and you are at the Golden Core Stage, Senior Brother! Why don't we kill her on the quiet?”
The Beast Taming Sect focused primarily on contracted beasts, so their structure was not as detailed. Their peak masters were simply the twelve elders.
If the Beast Taming Sect were a major sect comparable to the Qingyun Sect, then Qian De's status could indeed compare to Wen Jingshu's.
Unfortunately, the Beast Taming Sect was only a first-rate sect.
The female cultivator's flattery pleased Qian De, but he was no fool. He snorted and said:
“Do you think a peak master's personal disciple wouldn't have life-saving treasures on them?”
“So what if we lost the Wind-Howling Wolf? If we offend the Qingyun Sect over this and trigger a feud between our two sects, can you bear the responsibility?”
Reprimanded, the female cultivator lowered her head resentfully.
The male cultivator who had remained silent all this time patted her shoulder and comforted her, “It's fine. I'll find you an even better one.”
The four of them gave up on making things difficult for her because of her identity. Sensing that they were no longer pursuing her, Wen Jingshu could not help but feel a bit of regret.
If they had actually targeted her over the Wind-Howling Wolf, she would have had a perfect excuse to strike back and kill them. But they had backed off.
Oh well. Since they weren't coming for her, she would just have to go out of her way to find them.
Before going, Wen Jingshu circulated immortal qi through her body, cast a Cleansing Spell, and changed into a different set of robes to ensure there was no scent of the Wind-Howling Wolf left on her. Then, she disguised herself as a middle-aged male cultivator before retracing her steps.
Relying on his Golden Core Stage cultivation, Qian De had not traveled very far. It took Wen Jingshu only a bit of effort to find them.
The middle-aged male cultivator pulled out a stack of Thunder-Attracting Talismans with a flip of her hand. Her targets were the three troublesome Qi Refining cultivators; Wen Jingshu planned to deal with them first before handling Qian De.
Since they were willing to hunt her down over an ownerless Wind-Howling Wolf, she did not believe these four were good people.
As the saying went, “Better a dead fellow cultivator than a dead me.” If she didn't have a powerful background and plenty of treasures, she would have been the one dead this time.
Facing a Golden Core Stage cultivator now, Wen Jingshu was not confident in a direct confrontation, so she decided to launch a sneak attack.
Having made up her mind, Wen Jingshu flickered and appeared right in front of them, shouting:
“Qian De! You defiled my wife and brutally murdered my son! Today, I shall take your dog life!”
Following Wen Jingshu's furious roar, a barrage of crackling heavenly lightning rained down from the sky.
Although low-grade Thunder-Attracting Talismans were not very lethal to a Golden Core Stage cultivator, they made up for it in sheer numbers!
Wen Jingshu's sneak attack was so sudden that Qian De had absolutely no time to protect his three junior brothers and sisters.
Wen Jingshu seized the opportunity to harvest the lives of the three Qi Refining cultivators, collecting their corpses into the Shengsheng Bead in the process.
She was still eyeing the treasure on that female cultivator, after all, and couldn't let it be blown to pieces.
With that done, Wen Jingshu pulled out a longsword and, utilizing her wood immortal root, slashed furiously at Qian De.
She did not use any sword arts, fighting purely with basic sword techniques. Yet Qian De, a Golden Core Stage beast tamer, was actually forced to retreat repeatedly by her.
“It was your wife's honor that I took a liking to her! A Foundation Establishment piece of trash like you actually dares to seek vengeance against me?!”
“Once you are dead, you can reunite with them in the Netherworld!”
Hearing Qian De's words, Wen Jingshu spat at him in her heart.
Wait, she had only made up a random slanderous accusation, but this old bastard had actually done such a thing?
Very well. Now she would have absolutely no psychological burden about putting him to death.
