Chapter 41 · Volume 1

Battling the Wind-Howling Wolf

Anyway, Wen Jingshu's current identity was an inner sect disciple of the Pill Sect. Even if she couldn't “use” the legacy of the twenty-eight hand seals herself, she could still hand it over to the sect.
Her own family was rooted in the Pill Sect, so there was no reason to keep the twenty-eight hand seals to herself.
By disclosing the twenty-eight hand seals to the three of them now, she was putting it out in the open and, in turn, solidifying her identity as “Shu Jing.”
“Unfortunately, I have a lightning spiritual root. I ended up blowing up the cauldron, so I was kicked out.”
The three of them: “...”
It sounded strange, yet strangely reasonable.
Since Wen Jingshu had emerged earlier than them, the three naturally assumed she hadn't obtained as much as they had.
To this end, Wen Jingshu did not ask about what they had obtained from the legacy site, and the three of them tacitly refrained from bringing it up as well.
Since Wen Jingshu hadn't trained alongside them, they naturally didn't need to share their twenty-percent cut with her.
They could only chalk it up to Wen Jingshu's bad luck.
“Fellow Daoist Shu, now that this training journey has concluded, my Junior Sister and I intend to return to our sect. Let us part ways here.”
Bai Han also said, “I originally came here specifically to look for the legacy site. Now that it's over, I must also return to my sect to enter secluded cultivation.”
Hearing their words, Wen Jingshu couldn't help but feel a bit bored.
She had only just found an opportunity to keep an eye on Yun Xiange, and now Yun Xiange was already returning to her sect?
Before her frustration could set in, a wave of spiritual energy rippled from the communication stone kept inside her storage ring.
With a thought, Wen Jingshu took out an unused communication stone and said, “Meeting is fate. Why don't we exchange contact details? We can train together again if the opportunity arises in the future.”
The three of them were also more than willing to build a good relationship with an inner sect disciple of the Pill Sect, so they readily exchanged contact information.
Only after the three had departed did Wen Jingshu retrieve her primary communication stone and see the message her master had sent:
“The Sect's Newcomer Ceremony is in three months. You must return.”
Well, it turned out she had to head back too.
After replying to her master, Wen Jingshu planned to venture several hundred kilometers deeper into Jiangyuan Valley alone. If she got the chance, she wanted to find a low-grade third-rank demon beast—one whose strength was comparable to an early-stage Golden Core Stage human cultivator—to test her skills.
She estimated her wood immortal root to be at the peak of the Foundation Establishment Stage. However, after testing it out in Jiangyuan Valley over this period, she felt it was actually a few notches stronger than that.
This led her to make a bold assumption: could her wood immortal root already be comparable to an early-stage Golden Core Stage cultivation?
With these thoughts in mind, her feet honestly carried her deeper into the valley.
Jiangyuan Valley was vast; the portion lying between the Pill Sect and the Qingyun Sect was merely a small fraction of it.
Legend had it that a Ninth-Grade spiritual demon guarded the deepest depths of Jiangyuan Valley. No one knew if this was true or false, as no one had ever entered its deepest recesses. High-level human cultivators had no reason to, nor would they rashly trespass there.
After all, it was the territory of demon beasts. Not only were they numerous, but most of them also had incredibly thick hides and flesh. If human cultivators actually fought them head-on, they might not necessarily win.
After walking about another hundred kilometers deeper, Wen Jingshu sensed that there was no one around and used Thousand Faces to transform into another face.
The persona of Shu Jing would be of great use to her later. Even though there was no one here and it was completely safe, she was unwilling to take even the slightest risk.
It couldn't be helped; the members of the Wen family were simply low-profile and extremely cautious. Otherwise, it would have been impossible for both of her parents to have ascended, and for her sister to be waiting for her own ascension in such prime condition.
With no more worries, Wen Jingshu wandered around with her sword in hand. After slaying five high-grade first-rank spirit beasts and three mid-grade second-rank spirit beasts, she finally encountered a low-grade third-rank demon beast.
It was a wind-attribute Wind-Howling Wolf. It had a sleek, agile build and possessed extremely powerful offensive capabilities, making it the perfect target for Wen Jingshu to go all out against.
“Before we start, let me send you a few Thunder-Attracting Talismans to help you stretch your muscles!”
As Wen Jingshu spoke, she leaped to a safe position and threw three low-grade second-rank Thunder-Attracting Talismans at the Wind-Howling Wolf.
With the boost from her heavenly lightning spiritual root, the lightning summoned by these three Thunder-Attracting Talismans was exceptionally fierce and overbearing.
Following a series of deafening booms, the ground around the Wind-Howling Wolf was blasted beyond recognition, yet the wolf itself only had slightly dirtied fur.
Good heavens, the defensive power of demon beasts was truly heaven-defying!
Seeing that the Wind-Howling Wolf was barely injured, Wen Jingshu was not discouraged. She channeled her lightning spiritual energy, raised her sword, and unleashed the sword move she had just learned: the first stance of the Xianguan Sword Art.
With her current cultivation, compared to the sky full of sword qi shown in the demonstration, she could only unleash thirty strands of sword qi.
The moment she unleashed the sword qi, Wen Jingshu did not idle. She channeled her wood immortal root to cast the most basic Entangle skill. Instantly, three vines as thick as an adult man's waist erupted from the ground, tightly binding the elephant-sized Wind-Howling Wolf.
The Wind-Howling Wolf clawed fiercely at the vines, using all its strength to break free. It then dodged agilely, taking only twenty-odd strands of sword qi head-on.
Every strand of sword qi slashed toward its front legs, aimed specifically at restricting its movement.
Injured, the Wind-Howling Wolf flew into a violent rage. It let out a long howl toward the sky and charged madly at Wen Jingshu.
This time, Wen Jingshu was in no hurry to use her sword art. Instead, she began to engage it with the most basic sword moves.
The Wind-Howling Wolf's thick hind legs kicked the ground as its body arched slightly. A low, violent growl rumbled in its throat, and pale green wind vortexes suddenly swirled around its body, instantly drawing in all the surrounding airflow.
A wild wind suddenly whipped up in the forest, drawing dead branches and shattered leaves to the front of the Wind-Howling Wolf. Rich wind-attribute spiritual energy rapidly gathered in its mouth. The green light flared, instantly condensing into dozens of pale green wind blades as thin as cicada wings. The blades were sharp and translucent, carrying a sharp momentum capable of tearing everything apart.
“Swoosh! Swoosh! Swoosh!”
A dense barrage of air-splitting sounds erupted as dozens of wind blades fanned out, shooting toward Wen Jingshu in a dense swarm, sealing off all her possible angles of evasion.
Wherever the wind blades passed, the air was sliced layer by layer, emitting a piercing screech. The thick tree trunks nearby were grazed by stray blades, instantly leaving deep, fine cracks as wood chips flew everywhere, showing just how sharp and overbearing the attack was.
What powerful offensive strength! Was this a low-grade third-rank demon beast?
It was incredibly formidable!
Wen Jingshu's eyes narrowed. Calmly, she took half a step back. The lightning spiritual energy around her erupted, and a bright silver-violet light enveloped her body.
With a light flick of her wrist, her sword traced a smooth yet sharp silver arc in the air. Using the most basic parry from her sword art, she forcefully blocked the incoming green wind blades.
The wind blades instantly shattered into countless fine fragments of wind-attribute spiritual energy and dissolved into nothingness. However, the subsequent wind blades bombarded her one after another. The layered wind pressure continuously bore down on Wen Jingshu, forcing her to retreat repeatedly as she swung her sword to block the onslaught.
Within a few breaths, the sky full of wind blades was completely blocked by her net of sword light, leaving only the residual wind-attribute spiritual energy to ravage the forest.
Under the cover of the wind blades' assault, the Wind-Howling Wolf had already closed in for a surprise attack. Its body turned into a green blur as its sharp claws, wrapped in violent gusts of wind, swiped directly at Wen Jingshu's chest. The attack was swift, fierce, and utterly ruthless.
Wen Jingshu spun into the air, her posture as light as a crane. She unleashed the first stance of the Xianguan Sword Art once more, neutralizing the impact while evading the lethal claw strike.
Even so, her arm was still scratched.
After dodging, she charged forward, gritting her teeth as she broke through the remaining wind currents. She slashed directly at the wolf's back, preparing to turn the tables!
Sensing the lethal danger from behind, the Wind-Howling Wolf's wind vortexes spun rapidly. Leveraging the explosive power of its wind-attribute spiritual energy, it suddenly twisted its body to the side, barely dodging the slash.
