Old Tom silently took the money and took the initiative to support Hugo as they walked out.
Lin Wan and Chen Mo exchanged a look, both seeing doubt and vigilance in the other's eyes. However, they also knew now was not the time to press for answers. Under Postmaster Byrne's watchful gaze, they had to get the injured to the hospital first.
The two of them walked over to Zhao Yu and Zhou Kai, checking their breathing. They were still breathing; though weak, they were still alive.
Supporting one person each, they followed Old Tom out of the attic, rushing all the way to the hospital.
Once at the hospital, they bustled about, using the money Postmaster Byrne had given them to pay the medical expenses, arrange for rooms, and settle Zhao Yu and Zhou Kai in, leaving them in the care of the nurses.
Just when they thought they could finally catch their breath and properly sort out the current situation, a sudden commotion broke out in the hospital. Someone was shouting, “Someone's going to jump!” and “Stop him, quick!”
Lin Wan and Chen Mo's hearts tightened, and they quickly followed the crowd outside the hospital building.
Pushing their way to the front of the crowd, they looked up and saw two people standing on the roof of the hospital. It was Zhao Yu and Zhou Kai. Confusion and bewilderment filled their minds.
Hadn't they just been unconscious? How did they end up on the roof? What on earth were the two of them playing at?
The two of them stood on the edge of the roof. Zhao Yu, in particular, was standing on one leg with the other dangling in the air. The foot planted on the railing was restless, performing jumps like a ballet dancer. His body swayed precariously, yet he seemed to be having a great time.
A large crowd had gathered below. Some screamed in panic, while doctors and nurses anxiously pleaded with them to come down.
Just then, Zhao Yu seemed to spot Lin Wan and Chen Mo in the crowd. He stopped his dance performance, a bright smile spreading across his face as he waved to them.
Although they were too far away to hear him, both Lin Wan and Chen Mo clearly saw his exaggerated mouthing. Unfortunately, they couldn't read his lips to understand what he meant.
Having finished mouthing his message, Zhao Yu leaped without hesitation. His body plummeted, crashing heavily onto the ground. Blood instantly stained the pavement, and a shrill scream erupted from the crowd.
Immediately after, Zhou Kai jumped as well, also crashing heavily onto the ground, dying on the spot.
It was only afterward that Lin Wan and Chen Mo sneaked onto the rooftop and found a note left by Zhao Yu. It read: “Familiar? I've prepared a big surprise for you.”
This was a direct provocation aimed at him, Chen Mo was almost certain.
The past surfaced in Chen Mo's mind again. Zhao Yu's mocking laughter still rang in his ears. He must have been blind back then to actually mistake such a bastard for a good person.
“Brother Mo, what's wrong?”
“Nothing.” Lin Wan's concern brought Chen Mo back to his senses. He had a great teammate now; he couldn't let her worry for nothing. Glancing at the progress bar of his class skill accumulation on his panel, he gritted his teeth and swallowed his anger.
Bringing her thoughts back to the present, Lin Wan looked at Bai Ci, her voice carrying a trace of lingering fear and confusion. “That's what happened. We don't know why they committed suicide either, and that 'big surprise' is even more baffling.”
“There's no need to think about those two. It's definitely something bad, but not necessarily a conspiracy.” After saying this, Chen Mo pursed his lips, deliberately restraining his urge to speak.
Lin Wan thought about it, and relying on the tacit understanding they had built from working together, she understood what Chen Mo meant. She then explained to Bai Ci, “Miss Lora, please don't mind him. Brother Mo always speaks like this. What he means is that Zhao Yu and Zhou Kai are naturally reckless and never consider the consequences of their actions.”
“So, the 'big surprise' they left behind is highly unlikely to be anything good. They probably did something before they died that will cause a lot of trouble for our next moves. But their suicide itself probably doesn't have any direct connection to the conspiracy behind the plague; it's more like their own extreme choice.”
Bai Ci nodded slightly. Lin Wan's explanation matched her impression of those two. Moreover, judging from Chen Mo's behavior, he seemed to know Zhao Yu's patterns very well.
Zhao Yu acted in an eccentric and devious manner, while Zhou Kai blindly followed him. Their extreme act of suicide might really just be their own madness rather than being manipulated by a mastermind.
But that “big surprise” still left a lingering sense of unease. No one knew what kind of hidden danger those two madmen had left behind before they died.
Just as the three of them were lost in their own thoughts and fell into a brief silence, a sudden, rapid, and heavy knocking came from the door.
Bai Ci was the first to stand up. Who would come looking for her at this hour?
She walked quickly to the door and peered through the crack. Standing outside was actually Evan.
At this moment, Evan had lost his usual calmness and composure as a detective. His hair was slightly messy, his eyes were bloodshot, and his face was grim. His chest heaved with rapid breaths, as if he were in a state of suppressed rage.
He was in a state similar to Chen Mo, who was sitting inside. Chen Mo's anger was because of Zhao Yu, but she had no idea where Evan's anger was coming from.
Bai Ci quickly opened the door. Before she could even greet him, Evan took a sudden step forward, grabbed her arm, and demanded angrily, “Miss, tell me, are those two newly recruited mail carriers from the post office in there?”
His gaze bypassed Bai Ci, staring straight behind her, his eyes so sharp it felt as if he wanted to slice the two people hiding there to pieces.
Unfortunately, the layout of Hugo's house was somewhat unusual. The door faced a wall directly, making it impossible to see any of the living room from the entrance, completely wasting Evan's murderous gaze.
Bai Ci felt a slight pain from his grip but didn't struggle. She simply patted his hand gently, her tone as gentle as always. “Evan, calm down first and let go of me, okay? It hurts a little.”
Conversations fueled by anger were the easiest to go wrong. If a conflict broke out between the two sides, regardless of who won or lost, Bai Ci would suffer the greatest loss.
Therefore, she did not step aside but blocked Evan at the door, intending to find out what had happened first and soothe his emotions.
“How can I calm down?” Evan's rage did not subside, but the force of his grip unconsciously loosened a bit. “Edmond is dead. He was murdered.”
“What?” The calm on Bai Ci's face was instantly replaced by surprise, and she asked subconsciously, “What did you say? Edmond is dead? How could this happen? When did it happen?”
Although she and Edmond had never formally met, through Evan's descriptions and that chance glimpse on the commercial street, she already had an impression of this handsome young man with a row of dark moles under his left eye.
He was Evan's best friend, Isabella's lover, and the key figure connected to Postmaster Byrne's secret. How could he suddenly be murdered?
