Bai Ci answered each question truthfully.
Once the collection was mostly complete, the investigator began setting up various instruments.
First, he had Bai Ci put on a high-tech device that resembled a helmet.
The helmet was bristling with tiny probes. Once it was placed on her head, a series of complex, rapidly changing numbers quickly appeared on the device's screen.
“This is an energy detector, used to measure the level of energy fluctuations in your body.”
The test lasted for over ten minutes. Once the jumping numbers settled on a stable value, the investigator nodded and helped Bai Ci take off the helmet.
Next, he pointed to a compass in the corner of the room. “Miss Bai, could you please touch that compass and see if there's any reaction?”
Bai Ci did as instructed, walking over and reaching out to touch the face of the compass.
The needle of the compass wobbled slightly a few times but quickly came to a stop, without spinning wildly.
The investigator recorded this phenomenon, then pointed to the tarot cards on the table. “Next, please pick up the tarot cards and draw three of them. Don't overthink it—just draw based on your intuition.”
Naturally, Bai Ci complied. She walked over to the table and looked at the tarot cards, unable to help but complain internally.
Tarot cards, really? This testing process is way too comprehensive. They're even using Western metaphysics.
She reached out, but the moment her hand brushed the tarot cards, the ring on her left hand suddenly began to grow hot.
Bai Ci quickly withdrew her hand and tactfully cautioned, “There seems to be something wrong with these tarot cards.”
She raised her hand, showing her ring to the investigator. “This ring is usually very quiet. It only heats up to warn me when I'm in danger.”
Hearing this, a look of understanding appeared on the investigator's face. He waved his hand dismissively and said in a relaxed tone,
“Don't worry, Miss Bai. The hazard of these tarot cards is very minor. Any effect on the human body can be cleared up by spending a few minutes in the sun.”
“We handle them every day. If there were any real danger, we'd definitely know. Go ahead and draw; you'll be fine.”
Feeling the temperature of the ring, Bai Ci noted that while it was hot, it wasn't scalding. She had a rough idea of the situation now.
It seemed the tarot cards indeed posed no significant danger.
She reached out again, intuitively drew three cards from the deck, gently placed them on the table, and looked at the investigator.
The investigator leaned in to inspect the three cards, then looked at Bai Ci and began to explain in a serious tone.
“Miss Bai, these three cards are the upright Sun, the reversed Seven of Swords, and the upright Three of Pentacles.”
He pointed to the first card, the upright Sun.
“The upright Sun represents light, hope, and happiness.”
“This means you will ultimately achieve happiness, your current predicament will be resolved successfully, and your future is bright.”
Next, he pointed to the reversed Seven of Swords.
“This reversed Seven of Swords represents hardships, obstacles, and hidden crises.”
“It indicates that your path to pursuing happiness will not be smooth sailing. You will encounter many difficulties and setbacks along the way, requiring you to be exceptionally cautious and not let your guard down.”
Finally, he looked at the upright Three of Pentacles.
“The upright Three of Pentacles represents cooperation, support, and stability, which corresponds to the people around you.”
“Those in the position of lovers might encounter accidents and danger, making them prone to misfortune. However, those in the position of friends will help you, becoming a solid support system.”
Was that really how it was?
Bai Ci wasn't too sure. She had never studied tarot cards closely, so for now, she could only believe whatever the investigator told her.
Putting everything else aside, the investigator's words did indeed align closely with her situation.
However, such interpretations were incredibly broad. They fit the context of this instance, and they even fit her own personal circumstances to some degree.
But when something fits too many situations, it usually just means it's inherently generic.
It was just like the astrology trends that had been popular among students back when Bai Ci was still in school.
Then again, since this instance actually contained anomalous forces, perhaps the tarot cards here did possess some genuine mystical insight.
After the tarot card test concluded, the investigator had Bai Ci touch several other metaphysical props, conducting a series of additional tests.
In short, through this blend of Eastern and Western methods, combining science and metaphysics, the entire testing process took over an hour.
Once all the tests were complete, the investigator organized the samples and testing data.
“Captain Chen, all tests have been completed. We'll analyze the samples as quickly as possible. The results should be out by tomorrow at the earliest.”
Chen Quan nodded and looked at Bai Ci, his tone gentle. “Miss Bai, thank you for your hard work today.”
“Once the results are out, I'll notify you immediately. You should go back and get some rest.”
Bai Ci followed his gaze to look out the window. The sky had turned completely dark.
She nodded slightly. “Alright, thank you for your trouble, Captain Chen and the investigator.”
“It's getting late. Let me see you home,” Chen Quan offered.
“You might still have unknown anomalies on you, which could attract trouble. Escorting you back will help avoid any accidents on the road.”
Bai Ci naturally wouldn't refuse.
They walked for a bit, and just as they were about to exit the Bureau of Investigation, they saw the glasses-wearing investigator running in hurriedly.
“Captain, the Chief said there's an emergency. He wants you to go to his office right away.”
Chen Quan's expression turned serious. “Understood, I'll head over immediately.”
He turned back to Bai Ci, his tone carrying a hint of apology. “I'm sorry, Miss Bai. It looks like I won't be able to escort you home after all.”
“Glasses, put aside whatever you're doing for now—”
An Shu, who had just finished organizing the conversation records, walked over. Hearing this, she immediately suggested, “Captain, why not have Xiao Wen do it?”
“He's a newcomer and doesn't have much on his plate, whereas Glasses is going to be dragged into overtime by me tonight.”
As she spoke, An Shu took out her phone and dialed Xiao Wen's number. However, the phone rang repeatedly without anyone answering.
A look of confusion appeared on An Shu's face. “Strange, why isn't he picking up?”
Hearing this, Chen Quan thought for a moment, and his expression instantly darkened. His tone grew solemn. “Xiao Wen didn't return with you? When was the last time you contacted him?”
“No,” An Shu shook her head. “We split up. I followed Miss Bai back... while he went to tail Miss Bai's latest blind date partner.”
Saying out loud in front of the person involved that they had been tailing her made An Shu feel a bit embarrassed.
Bai Ci quietly opened her Rain's Message panel to take a look. The content on it had already reset to its initial state, meaning her latest blind date partner was dead.
Combining this with the information revealed by the Rain's Message panel, a dark premonition welled up in her heart.
“Captain Chen, Officer Xiao Wen might have run into trouble.”
