Chapter 97 · Volume 1

Blackmailing the Prophet? How Many Heads Does This Fellow Have?

Every person's reaction was identical. In an instant, they either lowered their heads, focused intently on their notes, or pretended to be extremely busy.
While “Bai Feifei’s” previous outrageous statements were shocking, they had at least remained within the realm of “normal” discourse.
But this was far too explosive.
No one dared to respond, and no one wanted to.
Li Menglong’s mouth hung open, the muscles in his face twitching several times. He couldn't force out a single word, his eyes darting frantically toward Liu Yun.
This woman actually dared to say such things. You can't possibly still have no reaction, can you?
“What’s with those expressions? Could it be that I guessed right?” Xu Mo laughed.
“You’re full of it!” Li Menglong barked. Seeing that no one else was speaking, he finally lost his temper completely. The strength of an Edgerunner erupted from him, the pressure turning the faces of those around him pale.
“Setting aside the fact that we haven't even seen the potions from beneath the coal mine and have no idea what’s going on...”
“How dare you slander Dawn City’s most critical research! What is your motive?!”
“Enough,” Liu Yun’s voice rang out calmly, cutting off the deteriorating conversation.
“Today’s matter ends here. No more arguing.”
“Bai Feifei.” She paused. “Your test for today is complete. There will be follow-up regarding your rank assessment.”
“But as for your supposed guess... those are not the same thing.”
However, Xu Mo had no intention of letting it go. He turned around, his eyes fixed on the Prophet’s with a mocking glint.
“Why aren't they the same thing?”
“I think it’s quite reasonable to assume there’s a connection between the two.”
As he spoke, he raised a hand and pointed at Li Menglong on the edge of the platform.
“What did that old fossil just say? That he hasn't seen the aberration-inducing potion from the mine?”
“I recall that Wan Qianhong risked her life to bring back a bottle. If he dares to deny it so blatantly, it means... that potion hasn't been made public in the Inner City yet!”
His gaze sharpened as he felt he might have stumbled upon a truth. Looking at Liu Yun, he said in a sarcastic tone:
“No wonder Wan Qianhong said she didn't know why her dear Prophet teacher always stopped her from investigating further.”
“It seems there’s a problem behind all this... The fox guarding the henhouse? Investigating myself?”
Though his tone was mocking, his implication was crystal clear.
He was suspecting Liu Yun!
He suspected that the greatest protector of Dawn City might be the mastermind behind everything!
If that were the case, everything would make sense. It would even align with what Wu Xin had said before he died.
It was perfectly logical!
Listening to this in her mind, Bai Feifei was stunned.
That’s impossible, right?
And this kind of suspicion... you’re just going to say it directly to her face without any evidence?!
The air in the testing grounds seemed to solidify. Even Li Menglong was dazed.
No one expected that, at a time like this, this girl would dare to point her finger at Liu Yun!
This move left the Li and Huang families completely bewildered; they stood on the platform scratching their heads.
Liu Yun looked at “Bai Feifei,” her eyes holding a trace of complexity and helplessness.
“Sigh.” She didn't fly into a rage because of “Bai Feifei’s” questioning. Instead, she let out a sigh.
“As the Prophet of Dawn City, I am to blame for many of its evils...”
“It is only natural for you to have guesses and suspicions.”
“We will naturally conduct an investigation after the autopsy of the subject.”
“However, regarding the events of this testing ground, please do not spread word of them for the time being.”
The crowd was utterly shocked. After being spoken to like that, the Prophet actually wasn't angry??
What exactly was Liu Yun’s attitude toward this Bai Feifei?
This could no longer be described merely as “indulgence.” She had never treated her own disciple, Wan Qianhong, like this!
Xu Mo’s mouth twitched as he heard her response.
He didn't feel particularly happy about Liu Yun’s humble stance.
To be honest, he had been hoping Liu Yun would lose her temper and attack him.
If he were right, then the game’s plot would be mostly solved, and it would likely trigger a massive progression jump.
If Liu Yun turned hostile, at worst he could switch to Sinking Black mode, or just rewind if things got truly desperate.
In that case, the Calamity of Dawn storyline would basically be solved. He wouldn't need to use his brain anymore; he could just keep building strength and then enjoy the thrill of the fight.
But now Liu Yun hadn't turned hostile...
Tsk, that’s troublesome. He might have been wrong.
Checking his game panel, he saw that the plot progress hadn't moved at all.
【Key Plot: Calamity of Dawn, Current Completion: 6%】
“Sigh...”
Xu Mo sighed, shaking off the disappointment. He looked back at Liu Yun, a very punchable smile appearing on his face.
“Ah, is that so... I’m afraid that might be a bit difficult to do.”
Liu Yun’s brow furrowed slightly. “What do you mean?”
“Well...” Xu Mo took a step forward with his hands in his pockets. His posture didn't look like he was talking to a Prophet; it looked like he was haggling at a vegetable market.
He knew that today’s events were winding down and that the plot was unlikely to progress further. In that case, he had to find a way to get some benefits.
“I have this problem, you see. I have a big mouth and I can’t keep secrets.”
“Today’s events were indeed quite interesting. If I have a bit too much to drink, everyone in Dawn City might know about this by tomorrow morning...”
The eyes of everyone present widened in unison.
Xu Mo ignored them and continued to look at Liu Yun with a grin.
“So, if you want me to keep my mouth shut, shouldn't you...”
He reached out his right hand and rubbed his thumb and index finger together.
“...give me some hush money?”
The testing grounds fell into a deathly silence. Everyone looked at “Bai Feifei” as if she were some kind of idol.
Li Menglong’s mouth was so wide his jaw nearly dislocated.
He completely failed to understand what was happening.
No one present could understand. They might need the rest of their lives to study exactly what kind of mental state “Bai Feifei” was in to say such a thing.
They had previously thought that “Bai Feifei” was so lawless and reckless purely because she had Prophet Liu Yun protecting her.
But now, she had first accused Prophet Liu Yun of being the fox guarding the henhouse, and now she wanted to blackmail the Prophet?
How many heads does she have to dare speak like that!
“What... what are you saying?!” Bai Feifei cried out in shock within his mind. She felt her understanding of this Old-Timer was being refreshed yet again.
She thought she had gotten used to Xu Mo using her body to perform all sorts of outrageous acts, but this was still beyond her imagination.
Was “she” determined to force a falling out with Prophet Liu Yun today?
