Insulting an Edgerunner publicly in front of every Scavenger present—one didn't need to guess to know who was responsible for that.
Bai Feifei’s door was kicked open. Xu Mo, operating her body, walked out with an arrogant, swaggering gait, swaying slightly with every step.
She was wearing a fresh combat suit. The Scavenger uniform from before, which had been soaked through with blood, was now draped over her shoulders like a cape.
It looked like a crimson garment of blood, adorned with medals.
“What’s the big deal about an Edgerunner? Bringing out some small fry just to try and scare people!”
This exceptionally imposing entrance left Wu Jinyi momentarily stunned, standing there in a daze.
Aren't you a damn sinner? Why the hell are you making an entrance like some grand general!
“You... are Bai Feifei?” Wu Jinyi asked, staring at “Bai Feifei.”
“Bah!” Xu Mo spat out a toothpick. “I’m your daddy! What of it?”
Wan Qianhong lowered her head slightly. At this point, she almost couldn't bear to look; she was likely cringing so hard her toes were curling.
When “Bai Feifei” had told her what to do earlier, she had given specific instructions.
—Don't worry about conflict. You don't need to carefully weigh your words or play verbal games.
Anything that was inconvenient or inappropriate for Wan Qianhong to say, she would say it for her.
Wan Qianhong only needed to stick firmly to her background with the Prophet and hold her ground. She would handle the rest.
So, this was what she meant by 'handling it'...
“Heh!” Wu Jinyi was actually moved to laughter by anger. After “Bai Feifei” appeared, there were so many things to criticize that he didn't even know where to start.
“Your name has long been like a clap of thunder to my ears. Seeing you today, you truly are lawless and recklessly arrogant!”
“If it was like a clap of thunder, how come it didn't strike you dead? Is there even anything inside that head of yours?” Xu Mo fired back instantly, focusing entirely on offense without a hint of hesitation.
“I hope you can maintain this arrogance forever.” The veins on Wu Jinyi’s forehead pulsed. His gaze toward Bai Feifei was sinister, as if he were looking at a dead woman.
“If I heard correctly, you were just insulting an Edgerunner, weren't you?”
“I’ve been arrogant for several lifetimes; you don't need to trouble yourself with that,” Xu Mo said.
“People from small places really lack perspective, constantly yapping about an Edgerunner.”
“Our leader Wan has a Prophet backing her, yet does she go around bragging about it like you? Look at that face of yours!”
As Xu Mo spoke, he steered the conversation toward the Prophet, beginning to borrow that formidable authority.
In fact, based on his experience from multiple playthroughs, a Prophet’s status wasn't actually that big of a deal. However, in this specific scenario, it was the most effective shield to use.
Wan Qianhong wondered how “Bai Feifei” had the nerve to criticize someone else’s 'face' right now. But since the topic had shifted to her, she maintained a composed, calm expression.
Upon hearing the mention of the Prophet, Wu Jinyi’s expression became noticeably less reckless. He said cautiously, “The anomaly beneath this coal mine is far too dangerous. We need an Edgerunner to lead the team.”
“As for the Prophet... what does this matter have to do with her?!”
“How does it not?!” Xu Mo seized the opportunity to escalate the situation: “Only Prophet Liu Yun has the authority to command District Head Wan. Since the Prophet hasn't spoken, who are you to tell people to withdraw?”
“What? Is your word more effective than a Prophet’s? Does the Prophet know about this?”
“N-No!” Wu Jinyi began to stammer.
One of the primary traits of a Prophet was the ability to calculate karma, seek fortune, and avoid calamity. They possessed a wondrous perception of the world and could, to a certain extent, predict the future.
Wu Jinyi didn't dare talk nonsense, because a Prophet might actually know something!
Immediately, he barked back with a slight stutter, “When did I ever say that?! Replacing you is a request from above!”
“Above? Which above?” Xu Mo laughed. “So, you’re planning to throw your leaders under the bus?”
“Fine then, tell us who it is. Let’s see which leader wants to sabotage the Prophet!”
Xu Mo’s speech was incredibly fast. For every sentence the opponent managed, he countered with three.
Beside them, Wan Qianhong was nearly reaching her limit, her eyes constantly darting toward Bai Feifei out of the corner of her eye.
She was shocked by this girl once again. You really have a talent for this!
She had previously thought Bai Feifei was the type who was ruthless but silent, preferring to act rather than explain. She hadn't expected her to be this fierce when she went all out verbally! She had almost completely humiliated Wu Jinyi.
She had always detested men like Wu Jinyi who spoke with hidden barbs. Seeing him suffer now gave her a strange sense of satisfaction.
“You... what kind of nonsense are you talking!” Wu Jinyi had turned into a tongue-tied mess, his face flushed the color of dark liver from the verbal lashing.
Suddenly, his expression froze.
Wait a minute!
Prophet or not, at most it meant he couldn't afford to provoke Wan Qianhong. But who the hell were you?
You’re a sinner! Why are you acting like the Prophet is your backer too?!
In an instant, his face twisted into a snarl. He said viciously, “I wouldn't dare speculate on the Prophet’s thoughts, but... what does that have to do with you!”
“Regardless of anything else, you are a sinner. Murdering a colleague is an even greater crime. You should be taken back immediately for a public trial!”
“What, is the Prophet going to protect you too?”
Xu Mo suddenly flashed a smile that suggested his trap had been sprung. “How do you know she isn't?”
With that, he shot a glance at Wan Qianhong.
Wan Qianhong was momentarily stunned when she saw “Bai Feifei’s” beautiful eyes suddenly dart toward her. Then she reacted and quickly spoke up.
“Oh, right. It’s like this: Scavenger Bai Feifei is the person who understands this incident the most.”
“Earlier, during the mine earthquake, she provided certain warnings about the situation below.”
“Therefore, she is a key figure in our operation and must accompany the team.”
Wu Jinyi: ?
He looked at Wan Qianhong in shock. It was hard to imagine her lying with such a straight face.
“You’re going to protect her? She’s a sinner!”
Wan Qianhong frowned. At this point, her tone became exceptionally firm.
“If this matter can be investigated thoroughly, she will be the greatest contributor. Therefore, she cannot leave; she must assist in the investigation.”
Wan Qianhong was openly protecting Bai Feifei. Because of the Prophet, no one here dared to move against Wan, which meant no one could touch Bai Feifei either!
Wu Jinyi felt like he couldn't catch his breath, his head spinning with rage.
He gritted his teeth, his eyes darting between Wan Qianhong and “Bai Feifei.”
It cannot end like this!
Especially not that hateful Bai Feifei!
Suddenly, a bolt of inspiration flashed through his mind as he thought of what he considered to be an absolutely brilliant plan.
