Wan Qianhong gazed deeply at Bai Feifei’s back; a peculiar mist seemed to shroud the girl.
During the Scavenger interview, she had been drawn to the girl’s decisiveness, her exquisite combat techniques, and her eccentric personality.
Later, at their first meeting, the girl had directly killed a member of the Inner City’s Huang family. Yet, subsequent blood tests revealed that Huang Jiahao had already shown signs of being tainted and turning into an aberration.
And now, this disaster in a place as complex as the coal mine—this unprecedented subterranean riot—had been triggered by her and was intimately connected to her once again!
Her mentor, Prophet Liu Yun, had once said that this girl, Bai Feifei, carried Great Karma.
Wan Qianhong didn’t fully understand the Prophet’s words or the true meaning of that “karma,” but she could sense a fascinating aura of danger radiating from the girl.
Unconsciously, she found herself staring until her mind began to wander.
Xu Mo sensed her gaze and found it difficult to keep a straight face.
“I’m giving your body back for now. That woman named Wan seems to really like you; she’s looking at you like some kind of obsessive creep.”
“It’s truly bizarre, but it’s a good thing. If we don’t fall out with her, it’ll make the early game much easier.”
Xu Mo’s voice echoed in Bai Feifei’s ears. Then, with a slight shudder, she regained control of her body.
Seeing that the immediate crisis had passed, Xu Mo withdrew from the controls to save his limited duration for any future emergencies.
On the other side, a Scavenger from the East District, having heard Wang Xu’s report, could no longer contain his emotions and rushed in front of him.
“The anomaly detector is an E-rank sequence object! How could it possibly crack? Are you sure it wasn’t just a storage issue at your outpost?”
“Do you have any idea what kind of level an anomaly has to be to make a detector crack?! The whole damn Dawn City has never seen anything like this!”
The speaker was Yang Shuo, a Rank 4 Scavenger. Standing two hundred and twenty centimeters tall, bald, and incredibly muscular, he looked like a father lecturing a son as he loomed over Wang Xu.
Wang Xu himself lacked confidence. “I’m not entirely sure either. This detector has been in use for years, so perhaps...”
“Enough!” Their argument jolted Wan Qianhong out of her daze. She pulled her gaze away from Bai Feifei and waved her hand irritably.
“Things have already reached this point. Let’s just focus on what we need to do.”
“Treat this as a once-in-a-century anomaly and report it to the city immediately. An event of this scale is no longer something we in the East District can handle on our own.”
“We’ll set up a temporary camp here for now. Tell our people to start assembling the housing modules.”
Yang Shuo frowned as he listened to Wan Qianhong’s orders.
“This incident is too big. Not only will the city likely send more people, but even some roaming illegal organizations might show up.”
“This place is going to get very messy, very fast...”
“Which is why we need to move quickly!” Wan Qianhong interrupted him, her voice carrying an air of decisive command.
“You lead the team and get all the miners out of the mining area. That place is no longer habitable.”
“Calm them down and separate them from the mine management. Question them separately about the conditions here and what happened.”
“Also, find as many of the aberrant corpses killed by Bai Feifei last night as possible and bring them out!”
“Yes, Boss!” Yang Shuo’s expression turned serious as he quickly accepted the orders.
Once Wan Qianhong entered her leadership state, her arrangements were methodical and efficient. She even mobilized the personnel from the Second and Third Outposts.
Everyone moved into action rapidly. Some took advantage of the pause in the tremors to rush back into the mining area to search for personnel.
Meanwhile, those who had come with Wan Qianhong quickly pulled large iron crates and various furniture from their storage space.
Within minutes, the prototype of a small town was rapidly taking shape on the empty ground at the perimeter.
Such efficiency left the now-in-control Bai Feifei in awe.
Presently, every Scavenger was busy with their assigned duties. Only Bai Feifei seemed idle.
Perhaps because the impression left while Xu Mo was in control was too terrifying, all the Scavengers tacitly gave Bai Feifei a wide berth.
They didn't even spare her a glance!
Feeling a bit lost, Bai Feifei bit her lip and dragged her exhausted body toward Wan Qianhong.
“Ma’am,” Bai Feifei called out cautiously. “I am a Scavenger too. Is there anything I need to do?”
Wan Qianhong: ?
As she watched Bai Feifei approach to speak, her mouth twitched.
What do I need you to do? If you can just stop causing trouble and do nothing, I’ll thank the heavens!
“Just rest for now. Do not act alone, and do not leave this temporary camp,” Wan Qianhong said. She swallowed hard, and as if afraid of causing a misunderstanding, she added, “This isn’t house arrest; it’s just to ensure proper procedure. Can you do that?”
“Yes, Ma’am,” Bai Feifei said respectfully.
After a moment of thought, she bit her lip and awkwardly tried to explain, “Um... sometimes, my emotions get a bit out of control.”
“I might have offended you earlier. I’m sorry.”
Hearing this, Wan Qianhong took a sudden step back, eyeing Bai Feifei from head to toe as if she were looking at a monster.
The girl who had just been lecturing her, who had killed an outpost leader in public, and who had acted with utter disdain for everyone... was actually saying something like this now?
Even for a change in attitude, this was too extreme.
Seriously, could you just be normal? You're making me a bit scared.
Even Yang Shuo, standing nearby, had eyes wide with confusion as he watched Bai Feifei warily.
Was the outlaw he had seen tens of minutes ago just a hallucination?
“It’s fine,” Wan Qianhong forced a smile and pointed toward a temporary room. “You look very unwell. Go and rest first.”
Bai Feifei nodded and turned toward the room.
Watching her back disappear, Yang Shuo rubbed his large bald head vigorously and took a sharp breath.
“Hiss—this girl looks seriously unstable. Schizophrenia?”
“Boss, do I need to send a few brothers to keep an eye on her? She’s technically a criminal suspect, and based on what we just saw, she likely has a split personality.”
“Even if those miners were speaking up for her, she still killed a Scavenger from an outpost!”
