Chapter 138 · Volume 1

The Lord City Lord’s Stance, the Familiar Sinner Status Returns

Hearing that name mentioned again, Xu Mo recalled the City Lord—a man whose name carried little weight in the early stages of the game but was undeniably eccentric.
Upon hearing him speak, Bai Feifei quickly asked in her mind: “What do you mean, Lord Evil God?”
She seized every opportunity to glean more information from this supposedly omniscient Evil God.
Xu Mo drifted into his memories and spoke. “That guy was pretty humorous. He set up a bunch of muddled, confusing systems. You could say he was quite the idealist.”
“His ideas were decent, but neither he nor Dawn City had the strength to back them up.”
“In the end, it still fell. His ideals were basically treated like pop-snaps—thrown on the ground just to see them go bang.”
Speaking of this, he recalled his own confusion while playing the game.
As the first city Bai Feifei encountered, Dawn City was essentially just a transitional tutorial village. However, some of the philosophies and operations within the city felt fresh, unique, and filled with humanistic care. Yet, every time the game started, the city would rapidly fall into ruin.
In terms of the storyline, it felt somewhat nonsensical, and he never understood the point of such a design.
Listening to Xu Mo, Bai Feifei suddenly asked, “How did Dawn City eventually fall?”
Xu Mo was silent for a moment before replying, “Nothing special. Although the specific methods varied, they all led to the same end. Eventually, aberrations broke out everywhere and besieged Dawn City. In the end, everyone turned into aberrations, and it became a ghost city.”
A flash of insight struck Bai Feifei. “Everyone turned into aberrations? What caused it?”
“Was it that everyone was infected by the aberration taint, or... is it possible it was related to the potions?”
Xu Mo: “...”
Before realizing there was a problem with the potions, he truly had never looked deeply into that question.
After all, he wasn't exactly planning to live or die with Dawn City. Once he had enough game experience, he would usually bail long before the end...
Thus, he decided to remain silent and maintain his air of mystery.
Seeing that the Old-Timer was intentionally staying quiet, Bai Feifei had no choice. Ye Yu was still watching her from the side, so she couldn't stay dazed for too long and had to let the matter drop for now.
...
The following days at Qingping Academy were unusually peaceful.
The students of the Elite Class trained as usual, and Bai Feifei conducted her lessons as usual.
No enforcement team came to arrest her, and there were no disciplinary notices from the City Lord or other higher-ups. Bai Feifei came to train and teach every day as if nothing had happened!
The students began to find it strange.
“Why is Teacher Bai still teaching?” someone whispered. “Does she really have that much backing? Can you just kill people in public and get away with it?”
“You sound disappointed. Are you just looking for a holiday?”
“Bullshit! Of course not! It just feels... wrong...”
Sitting in the corner, Ye Yu listened to her classmates' discussions, her brow furrowing deeper and deeper.
Over the past few days, she had spoken to her father over the phone, trying to secure help for Bai Feifei from her family. Ye Hanshan told her that the major families were all jockeying for position, and the pharmaceutical companies were frantically lobbying the City Lord.
But all those undercurrents had yet to surface.
Everyone was waiting.
That afternoon, just as training ended, the doors to the training hall were suddenly pushed open.
Assistant Lin stood at the entrance, her expression looking slightly off.
Today, her professional smile was gone, replaced by an indescribable complexity.
“Teacher Bai.” She adjusted her glasses, her voice very soft. “The Prophet and the Lord City Lord have taken a stance on your matter. The first-hand news hasn't been released yet, so I came to tell you personally.”
The entire training hall fell silent instantly.
Every student’s gaze snapped toward Bai Feifei, then toward Assistant Lin.
Bai Feifei turned around, her calm demeanor causing Assistant Lin to blink in surprise.
“What did they say?” Bai Feifei asked.
Assistant Lin pulled out a tablet-like device and carefully chose her words.
“Prophet Liu Yun said that she did indeed witness aberration phenomena during the verification of the Inner City potion tests previously.”
The crowd gasped in shock, and Ye Yu’s mouth hung open.
There really had been problems long ago?
Assistant Lin paused. “But she cannot confirm if it is a problem with the potion itself, as the majority of people who were injected with the potion did not experience any issues.”
In Bai Feifei’s mind, Xu Mo’s annoyed voice rang out.
“That woman is quite the balancing act artist. She’s already a Prophet, yet she’s still playing the ‘non-stick pan’ game.”
“This is basically helping both sides and saying nothing at all.”
“It even feels like she’s subtly boosting the pharmaceutical companies. This person isn't honorable; she said she’d look after us in the Inner City.”
Listening to the incessant complaining in her head, Bai Feifei felt a bit speechless. She looked at Assistant Lin and continued, “And... the City Lord?”
Assistant Lin’s expression became even more complicated.
“The Lord City Lord said that this matter is very interesting.” She spoke slowly, as if reciting his exact words.
“The final issue regarding the potion will be decided at the Voting Assembly by the various representatives. Whether to continue promoting the potion and whether there is truly a problem will be decided by everyone’s vote.”
The students looked at each other.
That was essentially saying nothing as well.
“As for Bai Feifei,” Assistant Lin’s tone shifted, “the Lord City Lord also said that the fact you killed several people in public is a reality that no one can erase.”
“Therefore, Bai Feifei, you are now a sinner. Aside from teaching at the academy, you are forbidden from contacting outsiders and must be under constant surveillance.”
However, whether it was to Bai Feifei’s ears or Xu Mo’s, these words felt completely inconsequential.
A sinner?
She had already been a sinner since her first day as a Scavenger!
It was just a familiar identity returning.
That was it?
Bai Feifei even looked a bit confused as she asked, “Is that... all?”
“What are the specific measures?”
Assistant Lin looked at her and took a deep breath.
“The Lord City Lord said this is a major event. All representatives will convene in a few days. Whether the potion will continue to be promoted and how your act of killing will ultimately be handled will all be decided by public vote at the assembly.”
“And you, Bai Feifei.” Assistant Lin’s voice trembled slightly. “The Lord City Lord has invited you to attend the Voting Assembly! You are to present your own thoughts.”
She paused here, her tone carrying a shock she could no longer hide.
“Furthermore, this invitation treats you as a representative! You have the right to vote!”
Allowing a sinner to participate in the Voting Assembly as a representative?
With voting rights!?
What did this mean? This sounded like complete... favoritism from the City Lord!
Instantly, the training hall became deathly silent.
