Chapter 157 · Volume 1

Death Waltz

Tang Xin held the body of her gun across her chest, but her strength was insufficient to contend with those puppets. Her entire body was sent flying, slamming into the stone wall. Bloody gashes appeared on her arms, and large patches of rot began to spread!
The intense, stinging pain forced a low groan from her, and her consciousness felt as if it were being drained. However, the immediate crisis left her no time to think. She struggled to climb up from the ground, ignoring the pain and her injuries as she scrambled to dodge the puppets' follow-up attacks.
The blonde girl was not by her side; she could only rely on herself now.
The battle below was still raging, and she could not afford to become a burden at a time like this.
She chanted softly, applying two buffs to herself. Watching the sharp claws scrape against the ground, making a piercing screeching sound as the two puppets approached her, a rare glint of coldness appeared in her usually weak and uncertain gaze. Her face held more than just blood; it held a young girl's resolve.
Faint green and ice-blue light flowed in her palms, healing her wounds while Ice Crystal Shields condensed on either side of her. Emitting a frigid aura, they were launched together at the pouncing puppets!
They failed to cause any substantial damage. The seemingly sharp ice spears shattered into countless shards the moment they touched the puppets' bodies.
Under the enhancement of the Eroding Waltz, she couldn't even break through the defense of those orchestra puppets.
Tang Xin blamed herself. Why hadn't she spent more effort studying offensive water arts at the Starry Art Academy? To the point that now, most of the water arts abilities she had mastered were for healing and protection. Aside from the basic water bullets, ice spears, and swirling water columns required for her coursework, she was practically ignorant of offensive magic.
Perhaps the girl had never expected that one day she would go deep outside the city to fight side by side with others against such troublesome enemies.
The two orchestra puppets crawled forward, their eyes glowing crimson as they approached with clicking sounds. Tang Xin took a deep breath and whispered, "Ice Crystal Shield."
Six streams of water flowed and condensed in the air, simultaneously forming six solid, frost-covered ice shields that protected her entire body.
With the ice shields protecting her, a sense of security naturally arose in Tang Xin's heart. She clutched her gun tightly and began to maneuver around her enemies once more.
After driving back a puppet with a slash, the prolonged combat left Xu Xiaoyou feeling somewhat fatigued. She retreated a few steps to observe the battlefield.
She didn't need to worry about Tang Xin; the girl was able to manage the two puppets while still finding the focus to maintain the buffs on her. Lin Sheng was locked in a bitter struggle, and she herself had yet to find a breakthrough. Several times she had rushed toward the puppet mother,
only to be forced back by the arriving orchestra puppets or nearly have her throat slit by the chaotic, dancing silk threads surrounding it.
Should she have Tang Xin use 【Stars Overlap】?
This was her trump card. Ever since they went deep outside the city, she had not allowed the other girl to use this group buff. First, she needed to keep a trump card for emergencies, and second, she wanted to keep the enemies hidden in the shadows wary and afraid to act rashly.
Everyone knew that a Starry Singer was a profession that bestowed blessings from the stars, with auxiliary capabilities so powerful they were heaven-defying. Especially under this starry sky in the Starry Kingdom, the Star of Art, they were the daughters of the stars, watched over by the distant shore, with thousands of brilliance added to their bodies.
"What's wrong?" the puppeteer's voice drifted down from above.
"You look quite exhausted. Are you done already?"
"It seems your abilities aren't as tough as your mouth. This game hasn't satisfied me yet."
"How about I add some fuel to the fire to make the flames of this ball burn a bit brighter?"
"You talk too much," Xu Xiaoyou said, her brow furrowing.
"Jazz, Rock, my two dear lead singers, turn them into notes in the eroding quagmire!"
As the puppeteer's voice fell, the auras of two figures among the hundred puppets suddenly changed. Countless surrounding puppets turned into eroding sludge and surged toward them, reshaping their bodies.
In just a moment, two more heavy knights clad in heavy armor appeared in Xu Xiaoyou's vision. One was covered in thorny vines, while the other was wreathed in flames!
Their auras were as coarse as savage beasts. Holding guitar axes, they played music of completely different styles.
Under the enhancement of 【Jazz】 and 【Rock】, the strength of those orchestra puppets was boosted once again. Their auras became frenzied, and their aggression reached its peak!
They had already experienced the power of 'Country' before, and now that two such grade 3 heavy knight puppets had appeared at once, the balance of power, which had leaned toward the puppeteer from the start, now showed a completely one-sided tilt.
The two lead singers pointed at Xu Xiaoyou simultaneously. Upon receiving the command, the orchestra puppets collectively abandoned the blood-drenched Lin Sheng and instead attacked Xu Xiaoyou's position. The latter had no intention of being drawn into a melee; she utilized her high agility and the three current buffs to maneuver around the field, keeping her distance from the puppets.
While using her water arts ability to block the puppets' ranged attacks, Xu Xiaoyou bought herself time to think.
Two grade 3 puppets...
Aside from the missing Country, how many more of these high-level combat units did the puppeteer have?
Xu Xiaoyou suddenly thought of something and shouted, "Tang Xin!"
At that moment, the blue-haired girl on the high platform had just finished off the two puppets entangling her. Her breathing was uneven. Upon hearing Xu Xiaoyou's shout, her pupils contracted. A shadow lunged out in front of her, and two white flashes of blade-light exploded toward her neck!
Blood splattered, and the gun she held in front of her was hacked to pieces!
Tang Xin retreated abruptly, her face pale. If she hadn't timely protected herself with a water barrier, the wound on her neck might have been much more than just a simple cut.
The face in the shadows emerged. The moment she saw the other person, Tang Xin's heart skipped a beat, and an unprecedented sense of crisis welled up.
The young man's former face was gone; his eyes held nothing but dimness. He held two snake-fang daggers in a cross in front of him, maintaining his previous assassination posture.
For an isolated support profession like her, a grade 3 shadow striker like Lin Xing was a nightmare, especially for a singer like her who hadn't experienced many battles and had weak combat awareness and skills.
Seeing the opponent assume the assassination stance again, Tang Xin took a few steps back, her mind gradually going blank.
She couldn't dodge the next shadow strike... she was really going to die!
The aura of death was like a venomous snake with sharp fangs, about to bite through her throat.
Tang Xin wanted to use 【Stars Overlap】 to protect herself, but Xu Xiaoyou's instructions flashed through her mind. She subconsciously lowered her raised hand and watched helplessly as the snake-fang daggers drew infinitely closer to her neck.
The bird was about to stop singing; the blooming Flower of Winter was about to wither in an instant.
At that very moment, an explosive gunshot roared in Tang Xin's ear.
Blood bloomed from the Lin Xing puppet's body, and he fell straight down toward the ground below.
The entire field fell silent; even Xu Xiaoyou below was surprised.
A man drenched in blood stepped out from the darkness. The azure flood dragon pattern on his shoulder was glowing to the extreme, its fangs wide open.
The white smoke from the sniper rifle's muzzle drifted over his shattered glasses.
Chen San adjusted his glasses and spoke calmly, "Country has been dealt with. What is the next command, Commander?"
