Chapter 283 · Volume 1

Our Future Is Incredibly Bright

Li Yue gazed at the mist and rain outside the window, then glanced at the withered King sitting beside her. His age was advanced compared to many Calamity Warlocks, yet he was not quite at death’s door. From the look of it, he had likely used too much life-consuming magic in his youth.
Li Yue recalled that many of her own spells were indeed life-consuming, but her vitality was so immense that the depletion never outpaced her rate of self-healing.
Humans... are truly not suited to use my magic...
Li Yue watched the raindrops, nearly indistinguishable through the heavy downpour. The Royal Court was often rainy. Although she liked the rain, such weather lasting for too long inevitably brought a certain stifling atmosphere.
Whatever... it will all be over soon anyway.
“You have no blood relation to the Raven's Beak Covenant, do you?” Mordred’s raspy voice echoed in the air. He leaned back in his chair, his tone lacking his usual high-and-mighty air, sounding instead filled with exhaustion.
“No,” Li Yue replied casually. Her face remained expressionless, and her tone was as relaxed and peaceful as if she were telling an acquaintance what she had for dinner.
“Then... how did you gain the trust of that naturally suspicious fool?” There was a slight ripple in Mordred’s tone, seemingly carrying a hint of mockery.
“He asked me to kill the bishop of the main hall of the Limbo Specter Church. I did it, and he fulfilled his promise.” Li Yue shrugged, looking quite nonchalant.
“Hahaha, excellent. Hahaha.” Mordred suddenly laughed. He seemed unburdened, losing the steady composure of a monarch.
“It seems the ending will be the same as it was for Lobilance. Blood demons... in the little time I have left, I have researched those creatures a lot... a great, great deal...”
Li Yue frowned slightly. She looked at this human and felt he might know more than she had anticipated. However, judging by his state, he seemed only to have sensed it without fully grasping the truth. As a mortal who had inherited her magic, it was only natural for him to have some resistance to “those things.”
“Then... O Favored One of Death, no... perhaps... you might be something else entirely...” Mordred patted the armrest of the rattan chair, seemingly regaining some of his spirit. “I never expected that after thousands of years, the legends would actually become reality...”
“I thought the Favored One would appear among one of my descendants, or perhaps one day, I would become the ‘Chosen’ myself.” A scepter appeared in Mordred’s hand, which he used to prop himself up against the floor. “Unfortunately, even as everyone’s ‘faith’ began to waver, He never appeared—not even with a single divine oracle.”
“Do those things matter?” Li Yue asked suddenly. She saw Mordred’s pupils contract sharply before he let out a sigh of relief, as if a heavy stone had finally been lifted from his heart.
“They don’t matter. They never did...” Mordred pushed himself up and walked to the window. The muscles on his arms looked somewhat atrophied, yet they still contained immense power.
“It’s just that... once again, I have reached the same... moment of choice as that old fellow...” Mordred exhaled a breath of turbid air. “He bestowed upon me the blessing of ‘Death,’ yet gave me the curse of the ‘Cycle.’ Truly... merciful... and cruel.”
“My dear sons—if only they had my decisiveness and used my path to attain their own way, perhaps they could have maintained this kingdom for another few hundred years.” Mordred gave a long sigh. Li Yue remained silent; she knew he was referring to the two princes who currently held the highest achievements.
She remembered that others described Mordred as a “tyrant,” while those two princes were praised as “wise kings.”
But for humans following her path, who among them would not have to walk through a sea of blood and corpses, enduring endless pain and brutality? Being wise... was clearly an insufficiently mature description. However... it seemed one of them had not inherited this magic of hers.
“What did you come for?” Mordred turned around, looking at the young girl who emitted the same aura as himself. Her red eyes, white hair, and that powerful presence made him feel dazed, as if he had returned to the era when the Royal Court was at its most powerful and prosperous.
“Could it be for this?” Mordred pointed to the throne behind him, the seat that symbolized the King of the Royal Court. Li Yue shook her head slightly, then paused to think, as if hesitating over whether her answer was precise. Mordred froze for a moment, seemingly understanding everything.
“Heh... I see.” Mordred suddenly smiled. He produced a ring and took out two serpentine wine vessels, filling them both to the brim. “I understand now...”
“Don’t be formal.” Mordred clinked his cup with Li Yue’s, seemingly having come to terms with much.
“Although I don’t particularly want to say this, my heart truly feels much lighter now...” Mordred laughed heartily. “I’ve read many books lately and learned many ‘outside’ terms. I think... perhaps I can describe it like this...”
Standing before the rain-streaked window, he spoke a sentence that moved Li Yue and made her smile.
...
Li Yue walked down from the attic. Behind her came the sound of Mordred’s violent coughing. On her way down, she encountered Carlo. He seemed to have just finished his opening speech and was now hurrying up to the attic with an anxious expression.
He carried many medicinal herbs with powerful vitality, an aura that made even Li Yue raise an eyebrow.
He gave Li Yue a casual glance as he hurried past her. Seeing her descend so calmly, the outcome of her audience with the King was self-evident.
However, he likely could not have imagined that casual yet profoundly influential conversation—one that was perhaps the most important talk in Pan-Human History, and... the grandest... gamble of all.
Li Yue recalled that interesting dialogue. She knew that Mordred was also a mortal who had once glimpsed a flash of the darkness, which was why he had said those words.
“Our future is incredibly bright...”
Li Yue smiled faintly and let out a soft sigh.
