Chapter 30 · Volume 1

The Hunt

Howling winds whipped through the air.
Before he could even catch his breath, countless wind blades sliced through the sky toward him.
Startled, Haoyuan immediately used Wind Grace to erect a wind wall.
The wind wall shattered instantly.
Massive, heavy wind blades tore through the scales along Haoyuan's chest, belly, waist, and back.
Torrents of blood welled up, exposing ghastly, crimson gashes.
Haoyuan howled in pain.
He hadn't expected the bird monster's wind control to surpass his own!
The forty-meter sauropod beneath him was carved open with deep trenches of torn flesh. Blood cascaded like waterfalls, exposing its very skeleton.
Letting out a mournful wail, it teetered on the verge of collapse.
Without a second thought, Haoyuan pushed off the sauropod's back with his forepaws, springing forcefully into the air.
Channeling the power of Wind Grace, he leaped onto another sauropod titanosaur.
Powerful wind blades pursued him relentlessly.
Landing on the titanosaur, Haoyuan dodged repeatedly.
Even as he evaded, he scrambled toward the Argentinosaurus's head.
The wind blades chased after him.
Then, anticipating his movement, a blade abruptly cleaved off the Argentinosaurus's head.
Haoyuan's heart clenched.
It had been far too close.
Right as he was about to reach the top, the wind blade had struck.
The smooth, severed cross-section was less than a centimeter away from his claws.
If his dragon whiskers hadn't detected it, prompting him to pull his head back at the final fraction of a second, his blood would likely be spurting everywhere right now.
His heart turned cold, but he didn't pause; instead, he pushed hard against the remaining neck stump.
The titanosaur's neck snapped under the force, and he rode the momentum to soar into the air.
Buoyed by the kinetic boost and the lift from Wind Grace, he shot high into the sky, closing the distance between himself and the bird monster significantly.
Startled, the bird monster flapped its wings, unleashing a massive wind blade that slashed straight toward him.
Haoyuan opened his jaws and released a furious dragon roar.
“Roaaar!!!”
Wrapped in Wind Grace, the dragon roar surged upward, annihilating the massive wind blade midair.
The terrifying blast of sonic and wind energy pressed on, knocking the bird monster backward through the air.
Tumbling and falling, it frantically adjusted its posture until it regained flight.
When it finally stabilized and righted itself, the great white dragon had vanished from before its eyes.
Looking upward, it discovered he was gliding through the air right above and toward it.
The bird monster panicked.
It hadn't expected the great white dragon to possess the ability to glide.
Flapping its wings frantically, it ascended.
As it climbed, it saw the great white dragon open his mouth. Alarmed, it feared another dragon roar.
It violently beat its wings to cast a wind blade while twisting around to retreat.
That way, if he unleashed a dragon roar, it could use the concussive force to widen the gap.
But the instant it twisted away, it noticed to its horror that the great white dragon wasn't inhaling air—blue-white lightning crackled within his jaws instead.
A deafening crack of thunder detonated.
A thick bolt of lightning erupted from Haoyuan's mouth.
Moving with astonishing speed, it overtook the incoming wind blade midway through its flight and struck the bird monster dead-on.
The Thunder carried immense concussive force. The moment it hit, the bird monster's body sank heavily, hung in the air for a fraction of a second, and then, snapping out of the paralysis, wailed wretchedly as it plummeted.
With a heavy crash, plumes of dust billowed as the bird monster slammed into the earth. Blood poured from its chest and neck, staining the dark soil crimson.
Haoyuan landed on the ground, his massive frame kicking up clouds of dust.
Raising his sickle claws, he severed the bird monster's neck.
Using Whale Gulp Dragon Inhale, he drained all the spilling blood and the vast reserves within its body.
Once certain it was thoroughly dead, he slithered toward the source of the earlier sounds deep in the forest.
In the quiet forest, a tall fern suddenly shook, violently plowing through trees as it fled into the distance.
The commotion startled flocks of avian dinosaurs into flight and drew Haoyuan's attention.
Without hesitation, he slithered forward rapidly, pushed off the ground with his foreclaws, and launched himself into the air.
Stepping hard on the fleeing pseudo-dragons, he leaped repeatedly, ascending into the towering treetops.
Scaling the canopy, he gave chase along the treetops after the fleeing giant fern.
Skimming across the top of the foliage as though flying across grass, he swiftly closed in and caught up with the giant fern.
The giant fern never expected that instead of chasing through the undergrowth, the great white dragon would pursue it from above the canopy.
Free from the obstruction of forest trees, his speed was blistering, allowing him to catch up in no time.
Seeing no hope of escape, it whipped around, firing countless tough tree roots.
Haoyuan opened his mouth, intending to spew a torrent of flames, but held back for fear of burning down the forest and depriving the dinosaurs of food. Instead, he channeled lightning.
Thunder surged forth, coursing along the tree roots directly into the giant fern.
The giant fern convulsed violently, paralyzed on the spot by the electric shock.
Haoyuan quickly slithered over, raising his Kirin Arm as he spun and pounced downward.
Suddenly, a vertical maw split open on the giant fern.
From its maw of razor-sharp fangs, it spewed a broad spray of green toxic mist.
The toxic mist clearly possessed corrosive properties.
The moment it was unleashed, surrounding trees withered and yellowed merely from contact with the vapor.
Unable to dodge in time, Haoyuan quickly shielded his eyes with his forelimbs and clamped them shut.
As the toxic mist engulfed him, it actually corroded his highly resistant dragon scales, causing them to sizzle and smoke.
Haoyuan could hardly believe it, but he hesitated no longer.
At such close range, he opened his jaws and spewed a Fire Line.
A thumb-thick Fire Line shot forth, igniting the toxic mist.
The flames flared violently, tracing the path of the toxic mist right into the giant fern's maw.
Raging fire erupted, roaring and surging back outward.
In an instant, the giant fern—covered in roots and vines—was consumed, turning into a towering pillar of fire.
Haoyuan crashed to the ground, scattering fallen leaves everywhere.
The leaves caught fire midair, and the flames began spreading rapidly, threatening to engulf the entire forest.
Feeling a sharp pain at the tip of his snout, Haoyuan got up and realized his dragon whiskers had been corroded off.
Shaken by the discovery, he spewed massive torrents of water from his nostrils and mouth.
He doused the giant fern and the surrounding trees.
Even so, the spreading flames had scorched a fifteen-meter radius centered around the giant fern.
The speed of the spread left Haoyuan clicking his tongue in amazement.
Fortunately, it was all over.
Afterwards, Haoyuan hunted down every fleeing mimic monster. After wiping them all out to ensure none were left behind, he returned to the dinosaurs.
Seeing him appear, the dinosaurs knew victory was theirs, erupting into a chorus of cheers and jubilant calls.
Haoyuan was pleased as well; he had finally found a home for the dinosaurs.
At the same time, he would also rake in a massive haul of Energy Points.
Just then, he noticed that the cheering carnivorous dinosaurs had already eaten most of the pseudo-dragons beneath their feet.
He found this rather surprising.
Up until now, he had never seen dinosaurs consume pseudo-dragons.
Looking closer, he realized that even the herbivorous dinosaurs had accidentally ingested pseudo-dragon blood during the heat of battle.
An idea immediately crossed his mind.
These pseudo-dragons yielded high Energy Points; for ordinary creatures, consuming them ought to be quite beneficial as well.
He wondered what changes it might bring to the dinosaurs.
To test this theory, he had the carnivores consume the pseudo-dragons' flesh and made the herbivores drink their blood.
The herbivores were hesitant at first, but under his imposing authority, they were compelled to drink.
Even the younglings were forced to drink plenty.
Everything was finally over.
The sky remained dark, though slightly lighter than true night.
Haoyuan suddenly felt a twinge of nostalgia for the clear sense of time and distinct seasonal changes of the past, though that would likely have to wait a very long time.
Until the heavy black smoke no longer choked the sky, and sunlight returned to the earth.
