Chapter 42 · Volume 1

Saving Private Lingxin

Every detail of the office came into view, and Oter froze slightly.
He was quite surprised by the blood splattered all over the floor, but what astonished him even more was what his supervisor was doing.
His supervisor was beating a black-robed devotee to death!
Every blow was incredibly ruthless, targeting only vital spots—the neck, chest, lungs, and waist...
A flicker of confusion crossed Oter's eyes, and he quickly asked, “Tervil, what are you doing?”
The supervisor didn't say a word, merely wrapping his gold-patterned black robe tightly around himself.
He then resumed the brutal beating, acting as though the black-robed devotee before him were his sworn enemy.
Panting heavily, he explained in a strained, raspy voice, “My lord... he sneaked profane words into the prayer!”
Profane words!
Hearing this, Oter instantly flew into a rage, hot white steam puffing from his nostrils.
This ceremony was of paramount importance. A prayer ritual that had lasted for so many days and consumed so many resources was bound to draw the gaze of a higher power.
Making such a blunder at this final, critical juncture... this bastard hadn't just misread the words; he was deliberately trying to sabotage him!
Oter wanted nothing more than to tear the black-robed devotee apart and swallow him whole.
However, separated by the narrow window, his massive body couldn't squeeze inside, leaving him to watch with a savage glare.
The supervisor's strikes grew even more violent, prompting Oter to nod in satisfaction. “Good! Beat him to death! Yes, just like that!”
Raining down punches and kicks, the supervisor thrashed his opponent like a ragdoll. Finally, he leapt high into the air, twisting his hips.
The finisher was coming!
A spectacular, mid-air spinning wheel kick!
Thud!
The black-clothed devotee's body was sent flying against the wall, his head slumping forward limply.
“Magnificent!”
Oter's eyes shone with deep approval.
With the culprit dealt with, the supervisor turned back and bowed deeply to him.
Oter nodded. “Very good, Tervil. You have proven your absolute loyalty to me.”
“It is my duty, my lord.”
Oter pondered for a moment, then spoke. “I have a few very important tasks for you now.”
The supervisor remained bent over, keeping his deep bow. “It is my utmost honor.”
Oter smiled, increasingly pleased with his performance. “Tonight, I will face that human in the final showdown. Before that, I need to head to the kitchen to feast, then take a nap in my quarters to replenish my energy. You must wake me up around nine-thirty. After that, prepare ten of the most skilled devotees to form a prayer group for the ritual. Lastly, get the key ready and release the human.”
The supervisor nodded heavily, indicating he understood.
With a powerful flap of his wings that shook the air, the golden dragon's massive body soared away from the window.
After waiting a good while and ensuring there was no more sound outside, Bai Xiaodu finally raised his head warily. He quickly and with utter disgust ripped off the blood-stained hood of the gold-patterned black robe.
Thud.
At that moment, the half-slumped corpse against the wall completely collapsed to the floor. The old, blood-spattered face stared with wide eyes, filled with a lingering resentment that prevented them from closing.
Just moments ago, the second Bai Xiaodu had heard the approaching noise, he had made a split-second decision to swap clothes with the dead supervisor. He had then turned his face away and put on a show of beating the corpse to confuse any onlookers.
As for the blood and chaos everywhere? Well, that just made the performance all the more convincing!
Out of sheer desperation, he had put the supervisor's corpse to use one last time.
“Damn it, you still managed to scare me even when you're dead.”
Bai Xiaodu let out a sigh of relief, muttering curses under his breath as he wiped the cold sweat from his forehead.
Fortunately, the voice-mimicking tutorials he had watched online back then had paid off.
He had originally learned voice mimicry because some of his gaming clients weren't into his natural, youthful voice, preferring a mature, authoritative “CEO” tone instead.
To expand his market, Bai Xiaodu had put real effort into mastering it.
Who would have thought it would save his life today?
Bai Xiaodu stood with his hands on his hips and chuckled proudly. Sure enough, knowledge changes destiny, and learning is power!
That dragon didn't seem particularly bright either. He had just hurriedly dumped his instructions and flown right off.
Now, he could just waltz right up to the top floor in these clothes, free Lingxin ahead of schedule, and beat that oversized lizard to a pulp.
Even though this was a virtual game, slaying certain unique creatures usually dropped powerful passive skills.
Bai Xiaodu rubbed his chin. If I kill a dragon beast, what kind of loot will I get?
Just thinking about it got his blood pumping!
Without further hesitation, Bai Xiaodu grabbed the keys, threw the robe back on, and set off for the top floor of the library.
...
Meanwhile, in the cage on the top floor, lying on the cold floor, Lingxin stared up at the top of the iron cage.
She felt incredibly helpless.
She had been lying here since the start of the dungeon, having accomplished absolutely nothing.
According to the guide, she was supposed to use a wire to pick the lock, but for some reason, this golden dragon beast's intelligence seemed to have received an upgrade.
It had caught onto her escape attempt instantly, snatching away her wire with its claws before scattering a massive amount of magic-inhibiting materials inside the cage.
Of course, these petty tricks weren't enough to actually trap her.
But the reason these materials inhibited magic was that they caused severe interference to magic elements.
If Lingxin dared to cast a spell to break out, the scattered powder would instantly detonate like a loud alarm.
This left her in a highly awkward position.
This map was notoriously difficult, but she had originally been brimming with confidence, wanting to carry Bai Xiaodu through it like a seasoned pro.
She had envisioned showing him some sweet affection, pulling off a spectacular rescue, and planting a passionate kiss on him amidst the backdrop of flying dragon scales and blood.
Xiaobai would have been utterly swept off his feet!
How could an innocent, sheltered virgin like him possibly resist such a romantic onslaught?
This was all solid, proven theory from her relationship advice books.
She had even taken the initiative to adapt it creatively to their situation.
And the result? Well...
Sighing, Lingxin closed her eyes and prepared to rest some more.
She truly hadn't prepared for the possibility of Bai Xiaodu not knowing the spell language.
It seemed she had overestimated her little cutie's education level.
Wait, is it education or age...?
Whatever, it doesn't matter.
What mattered was that she had completely embarrassed herself, and she had no idea how Xiaobai had managed to clear the first stage.
Those spell runes and hymns were so complex and tedious. He must have strained his brain to barely memorize them.
He probably had a terribly rough time, didn't he?
On top of that, the human traitor supervisor of this map was incredibly shrewd and strict.
Xiaobai was probably dealing with him right now, which explained why he hadn't even messaged her.
Sigh, I wonder how he's going to get through the second stage.
Xiaobai was so cute and innocent; that supervisor would definitely act all high and mighty and bully him ruthlessly.
Just the thought of it made Lingxin frown, her heart aching with worry.
If you've got the guts, face me instead!
As she lay there with her eyes closed, soft footsteps suddenly echoed nearby. Lingxin froze and looked up.
A gold-patterned black robe, stained with blood, slowly walked into view. Looking up, she saw the slender figure pull back his hood with one hand, revealing a handsome, slightly boyish face carrying a faint smile.
Two silver-white fox ears perked up on his head, looking down at her cutely.
Lingxin's mind went completely blank.
It was Xiaobai!
Bai Xiaodu quickly raised a finger to his lips, giving a soft hiss. “I'm back.”
...
【Lingxin's Affection has reached 40. New stage reward unlocked.】
