Chapter 31 · Volume 1

Starry Heaven

The two who had accepted the task quickly left the gym.
The gun-carrying bodyguard packed up her things, only to find that for some reason, Xin Hai'an had lied back down on her chair.
Propping up her delicate face with one hand, she looked completely absentminded.
“Lady Xin Hai'an?”
The bodyguard reminded her in confusion, signaling that it was time to leave.
Xin Hai'an snapped out of it and nodded sluggishly.
The bodyguard grew even more puzzled.
“Do you have any instructions, or are you worried that the fox-kin was lying to gain your trust?”
Xin Hai'an shook her head.
“Neither.”
“Then...?”
Pursing her thin lips, Xin Hai'an spoke.
She spoke extremely fast, as if the words she wanted to say were burning her tongue.
“Do you think Bai Xiaodu is a virgin?”
The words hung in the air.
The bodyguard's eyes nearly popped out of her head, as if she couldn't believe such a scandalous question could come out of Xin Hai'an's mouth.
She first looked at Xin Hai'an with deep skepticism, then vigorously rubbed her ears and slapped her own head.
It quite hurt.
Hiss...
Not a dream.
Naturally, they had conducted a background check before contacting him. Bai Xiaodu's identity was easy to find and wasn't a secret.
It was nothing more than working at the night lounge, being a gaming companion, a fitness coach, and the like.
With this combination of identities, even a fool would know what Bai Xiaodu's private life was likely like.
Then she recalled Bai Xiaodu's well-behaved and cute appearance.
The probability of him still being an innocent boy was probably...
Pfft.
The sudden thought in her mind made the bodyguard unable to hold back.
But Xin Hai'an's face instantly darkened.
An expression of displeasure was obvious, and her glare was so fierce she looked ready to kill.
The bodyguard quickly adjusted, trying her best to keep a straight face and prepare a serious answer for her master's question.
For example, saying he was just a victim of deception, and that true love would break through all kinds of societal judgments and obstacles...
He probably “resets” every single night.
Don't make your Brother Bai laugh.
Just like how during an exam, absurd, brain-rot images always pop up in your head.
The words forming in the bodyguard's mind turned into...
...a highly distorted facial expression, trying desperately to laugh but holding it back for dear life.
Pfft.
Xin Hai'an's delicate face turned as black as the bottom of a pot.
She was doomed.
...
“Welcome.”
Starry Heaven.
Familiarly greeting the attendant at the door, Bai Xiaodu swaggered inside with Liya in tow.
“Two Sapphires, please.”
Sitting at the bar counter, Bai Xiaodu propped up his head and watched the bartender show off by flipping cups back and forth.
Liya had no choice but to sit patiently. It wasn't until she noticed Bai Xiaodu had already started tasting his drink that she couldn't help but whisper.
“Um, how do you plan on finding information about the potions' whereabouts?”
“Did you bring me here because this bar is managed by the Jackal Gang?”
“Uh, Bai Xiaodu, Lady Xin Hai'an gave you money, right?”
“No.”
“Then did you bring money?”
“No.”
“...”
Taking a sip, he noted that this most expensive drink indeed tasted quite good.
A look of enjoyment appeared on Bai Xiaodu's face.
The looks of a silver fox demihuman drew several gazes to him the moment he walked in.
Some had even actively approached him, attempting to strike up a conversation.
Bai Xiaodu ignored them.
He raised his glass to clink it against Liya's, the light-blue, gem-like liquid swirling slightly.
“Someone will pay for me.”
Merely a few seconds after he said those words,
a burly man with a jackal tattoo on his arm sat down next to him without saying a word.
The surrounding gazes instantly froze, and the onlookers quickly and tactfully dispersed.
The burly man ordered a glass of whiskey and downed it in one gulp.
Staring at the counter, he spoke in a muffled, questioning tone.
“What are you doing here?”
Liya instantly grew vigilant, while Bai Xiaodu flicked his empty glass.
“Drinking.”
The burly man frowned.
“You don't look like you're here to drink. You killed so many of our Jackal Gang members, yet you're not afraid and even dare to come here on your own accord?”
Bai Xiaodu smiled.
“Pay for my drinks, and I'll tell you.”
The burly man was taken aback for a moment, then reluctantly called out to the bartender.
“Put these two's drinks on my tab.”
Having done that, he immediately turned to look at Bai Xiaodu.
“Speak.”
Bai Xiaodu twitched his fox ears.
“Your rank is too low to know. Take me to see your boss.”
He was instantly amused by the sheer audacity. Just as the burly man was about to snap back, he seemed to recall something and forced himself to swallow his anger.
Narrowing his eyes, he replied sarcastically.
“Then let's go. Brother Yong is drinking in a private booth. I'll take you to see him right now.”
Even a fool could tell he harbored ill intentions.
As he led the way, Liya nervously nudged Bai Xiaodu with her arm.
Ensuring they had maintained a safe distance from the burly man, she whispered.
“What do we do? Are we really just going to follow him like this? What if it's an ambush?”
“And what did he mean by you killing so many of their people?”
Although Bai Xiaodu looked completely unbothered, Liya was still rather worried.
Especially after hearing the burly man mention Bai Xiaodu's track record,
she felt her vision go dark.
“If you really did that, how are we supposed to get them to willingly help us find information?”
They were supposed to ask for help, but this was basically walking right into the lion's den to provoke them!
They arrived.
Starry Heaven was a fairly large bar.
After turning through several corridors, the lighting became increasingly dim.
The burly man stopped and knocked heavily on a door.
“Brother Yong, I brought that fox back.”
A calm voice drifted from inside.
“Come in.”
Brother Yong was a robust young human. He sat sprawled in the center of a sofa, holding a heavily made-up waitress in his arms.
Seeing Bai Xiaodu enter, he put aside what he was doing.
He strode over and stood firmly in front of Bai Xiaodu.
Right then, the door behind them was shut with a heavy thud.
“Don't even think about leaving. This door has special protection; even sound is completely blocked.”
He sized him up, a hint of curiosity in his eyes.
“So it's you.”
“Quite inspiring, really. Working as a gigolo to save up enough money to buy a magic item and training your 【Freezing Ray】 to the Proficient rank.”
“You misunderstand. I merely gave many people the love they desired but couldn't get. I've never actively asked them for money.”
“Cut the crap. I'm in no mood to listen to your nonsense.”
He clenched his right fist, making his knuckles crack loudly.
Staring at Bai Xiaodu's hands, a cruel smile played on Brother Yong's lips.
“I won't hold a grudge against you for arranging a car to run over our West Sector boss on your home turf.”
“But this is my territory. For an apprentice who has only reached the Proficient rank in a single spell, your arrogance is terrifying.”
Then, he turned his face slightly to the side.
Liya slowly reached for the short sword at her waist, preparing to strike.
Brother Yong said casually,
“If I see you draw your sword, I won't hesitate to twist this guy's head off.”
“You know, once your martial arts reach the Proficient rank, your physical attributes improve. Killing him at such close range...”
“...is a piece of cake.”
Brother Yong casually loosened his arm, and then his right hand opened wide, clawing toward Bai Xiaodu's head.
“Behave yourself. What you did really pissed people off. I'm counting on making you kneel and beg for mercy in front of our big boss so I can become the new boss of the West Sector.”
Bai Xiaodu sighed.
“Can you stop fucking posing?”
Brother Yong froze, failing to register the words at first. Once he realized what Bai Xiaodu had said, he flew into an instant rage.
Veins bulged across his forehead.
“You piece of trash, you're asking for death!”
Before his voice could even fade,
a dark gun barrel materialized out of nowhere, pressed directly against his forehead by Bai Xiaodu!!!
With a click, the trigger was pulled.
Brother Yong's pupils dilated violently, his mind turning completely blank.
“Bang!!!”
Sparks instantly flew within the dim private booth!
